Announcement Letter Number: 298-122

Table of Contents:

Overview

The availability of the General Parallel File System for AIX (R) (GPFS) product is May 29, 1998.

GPFS is a parallel file system that supports most of the interfaces in today's popular UNIX (R) standards. GPFS works on a shared disk model. It allows access to files within an RS/6000 (TM) SP (TM) system from any node in the system. This provides high-performance file I/O to parallel jobs running on multiple RS/6000 SP nodes or to serial applications that are scheduled to, or executing on, RS/6000 SP nodes.

For details on this product, refer to Software Announcement 297-318 dated August 26, 1997, and Software Announcement 297-457 dated November 4, 1997.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Specified Operating Environment

Software Requirements

  • AIX (R) Version 4 Release 2.1, or later modification levels (either 5765-655 or 5765-C34) or AIX Version 4 Release 3.1, or later modification levels (5765-C34)

  • Parallel System Support Programs for AIX, Version 2 Release 4, or later (5765-529)

  • Recoverable Virtual Shared Disk Version 2.1.1 (5765-646)

The IBM Virtual Shared Disk image of PSSP must be installed prior to the installation of Recoverable Virtual Shared Disk.

Planning Information

There must be a minimum of three nodes running GPFS on the RS/6000 (TM) SP (TM).

Customer Responsibilities: In considering future migration, no coexistence support is provided with GPFS. All nodes in the partition must be at the same GPFS level. Node by node migration from Release 1 to future releases is not supported, but file data created with Release 1 can be preserved with Release 2 (for example, accessed via Release 2). There is no interoperability between Release 1 and future releases of GPFS.

ORDERING INFORMATION

Program Services for General Parallel File System for AIX Version 1 (5765-B95) will be available until January 31, 2001.

All other terms and conditions for IBM General Parallel File System for AIX as previously announced in Software Announcement 297-318 dated August 26, 1997, are unchanged.
