Now you can get the benefits of a relational database manager without the need to immediately rewrite your VSAM applications. With DB2 (R) VSAM Transparency for VSE/ESA (TM), migration to a relational database no longer means you have to convert all your VSAM applications and replace VSAM calls with SQL right away. DB2 VSAM Transparency for VSE/ESA (DB2 VSAM Transparency) lets you move some or all of your data to DB2 Server for VSE and continue using your existing applications without change. You can use the applications right away against the new database. You can also choose to continue running your operational applications against the VSAM datasets and use the built in propagation functions to replicate the data each night to decision support databases on the DB2 Server.
All VSAM VSE customers who want:
- An easy way to benefit from IBM's powerful DB2 family of
relational database products
- To migrate to DB2 Server for VSE
- To extend their existing VSAM applications to take advantage of relational technology without recoding existing VSAM applications
- DB2 VSAM Transparency for VSE/ESA is designed to operate with DB2 Server for VSE and/or supported versions of SQL/DS (TM).

This announcement is provided for your information only. For additional information, contact your IBM representative or call 800-IBM-4YOU.
DB2 VSAM Transparency for VSE/ESA (DB2 VSAM Transparency) allows users to migrate their data from VSAM files into DB2 tables and also provides transparent access to the migrated data with NO changes required to existing application programs.
With the help of an online tool, the characteristics of each VSAM file are described as well as the corresponding DB2 tables. Batch programs are supplied that automatically migrate the data. For each VSAM file, the following programs are created:
- A data move program
- A batch access program
- An online access program
- Key Sequenced Data Set (KSDS)
- VSAM Alternate Indexes
- Entry Sequenced Data Set (ESDS)
- Relative Record Data Set (RRDS)
Installations using DB2 VSAM Transparency will have several migration options available to them. All files do not have to be migrated at the same time. You may choose to proceed with migration on a file by file basis, or you may choose the flexibility of mixing your VSAM access with DB2 access.
DB2 VSAM Transparency has no dependencies on a specific programming language. Commonly used mainframe programming languages are supported. DB2 VSAM Transparency makes it easier to take advantage of DB2 relational technology while maintaining existing VSAM applications. With the use of DB2 databases and other IBM software, customers have the capability to build:
- Data warehouses
- Executive information systems
- Data marts
- Client/server applications
The version level of IBM DB2 VSAM Transparency for VSE/ESA reflects the version number for the current level of IBM DB2 Server for VSE with which it is designed to run. There are no prior versions of the product. Customers who are using IBM SQL/DS Version 3 Release 5 can also take advantage of the transparency features offered by IBM DB2 VSAM Transparency Version 5 Release 1.
