DESCRIPTION

Relational Data Model

Application Support Facility now offers the option to store its objects, such as document descriptions, menus, text elements, documents, letter request records, and so on, in DB2 using a relational data model. The use of DB2 is optional in Application Support Facility. There are, however, new functions for which the relational data model is a prerequisite. If DB2 is used, the data of the following libraries of Application Support Facility are stored in DB2 according to the relational data model:

  • General information library (GIL)
  • Document Cabinet
  • Saved document library (SLL)
  • Completed document library (CLL)
Administrator Productivity: By directly querying the tables in DB2, the full power of the structured query language (SQL) is available to administrators in order to obtain information about the definitions in the libraries of Application Support Facility and to produce cross reference listings. In addition, DB2 definitions such as views can be used to add a DB2-controlled authorization layer to the system.

Intersystem Operability: When using DB2, the online system and batch utilities of Application Support Facility can concurrently access the libraries of Application Support Facility. Connections based on the Distributed Relational Database Architecture(TM) (DRDA) between multiple systems of the DB2 family allow for an easy shadowing and distribution of the libraries of Application Support Facility.

Continuous Formatting: Based on the relational data model, the continuous formatting provides a new and efficient way to process letter request records (LRRs) generated on a completed document library (CLL). Application Support Facility searches for new LRRs on the CLL, starts the formatting of the documents, and stores the formatted documents in DB2. Further processing such as printing the formatted documents can be performed based on selection criteria and sorting sequences from the LRRs. Parallel processing of multiple continuous formatting address spaces and a range of control options can help you tune the formatting process for powerful throughput and optimal results.

Exploitation of System Resources: Because the continuous formatting still allows for an effective sorting when the usually resource consuming formatting tasks have already completed, formatting can start before all documents have been collected that are to be sorted. As typically the entire daily production of documents is to be sorted, formatting can now already run in parallel to the online system and thereby exploit resources when the system load is low.

Document-based Destination and Cycle Time Reduction: Continuous formatting is able to make the formatted document immediately available. Therefore, the continuous formatting process can simultaneously serve for immediate printing, faxing, and other distribution services, and for collect printing. This allows you to base the destination of the documents on information within themselves and contributes significantly to having the final documents available in the right place and at the right time.

Versioning: Production systems of Application Support Facility can now be defined to keep versions of records in the general information library (GIL).

Supporting Archiving Solutions: Having all versions of the GIL records available, you can use letter request records (LRRs) for your archive. Since all standard texts are not contained in the LRRs, you will typically have a space-saving archiving solution.

Administrator Productivity: Text administrators can read all versions of GIL records and reuse them as models for new records.

Improved Document Structures: Document type description (LTD) records can now contain other LTD records as entries. This allows you to group text elements and to define them as subdocuments to another document. Document structures with multiple levels of subdocuments are supported.

Worker Productivity: Using subdocuments in combination with new control options for the documents, the administrator can prepare the documents in a way that the user is presented only with the essential selection options for composing the documents, whereas the other selections are hidden in subdocument definitions.

Administrator Productivity: Changes in the structure of many documents can now often be limited to changes within one or a few subdocuments.

Support for Test and Production Systems: General information libraries (GILs) in Application Support Facility can now be defined as a test or production library. In a production GIL, no maintenance is allowed, and changes are only possible through runs of the resource reload utility.

When DB2 is used, test GILs can be defined to include the current production records. For these GILs, Application Support Facility provides a sophisticated support for efficient testing and for controlling the takeover from test to production.

System Integrity: The support for controlling the takeover from test to production in a relational GIL includes mandatory and optional check functions for formal consistency and completeness in the definitions of your GIL records. In addition, an integration test view of the GIL is provided that corresponds to the production GIL which will be created with the next takeover. With this view, you can verify that no records causing a severe error will go into production.

Administrator Productivity: The support function for efficient testing in a relational GIL helps you find errors early and limits the effects of erroneous records.

Coexistence with OfficeVision/MVS(TM): Coexistence with OfficeVision/MVS means that both Application Support Facility and OfficeVision(R)/MVS are installed while Application Support Facility and its features replace the Application Services component of OfficeVision/MVS and the corresponding features. Replacing of OfficeVision/MVS components means:

  • Functional replacement of Application Services
  • Physical replacement of
    • Document Composition feature
    • Document Writing feature
    • Application Connectivity Feature
These features of OfficeVision/MVS are no longer needed and can be cancelled if the corresponding features of Application Support Facility have been installed.
Benefits of the Coexistence: The coexistence provides access to the E-mail, Calendar, and DB2-based Enterprise Address Book functions of OfficeVision/MVS for the users of Application Support Facility.

The users of OfficeVision/MVS get access to all enhancements of Application Support Facility as successor product for Application Services and its features.

In addition the coexistence provides:

  • Support of the OfficeVision/MVS administration API
  • More flexibility concerning MRO configurations
  • Capacity and performance improvements
  • Reliable display of OfficeVision/MVS status flag information
  • An interface to OfficeVision/MVS functions for OS/2(R) applications
Limitations of the Coexistence: Application Support Facility does not provide an interface to connect DOS Office Direct Connect or Current/MVS. As substitution, it is recommended to use the Workstation feature to initiate requests for host functions from the workstation.

The application clist document for the Document Writing Feature does not provide clists for addressing functions. As substitution, it is recommended to use the alternate note editor of OfficeVision Productivity Facility/MVS.

Improved Application Integration: With Release 2 of IBM Application Support Facility Version 3, there are no longer essential limitations for the size of the standard interface block which is used as a control block between customer applications and Application Support Facility. A standard interface block of type 1 can now also be used for all invocations of functions in the document composition feature.

Compatibility: All standard interface blocks which can be used with Release 1 of IBM Application Support Facility Version 3 will also work with Release 2. For compatibility with versions prior to IBM Application Support Facility Version 3, the same rules apply as for Release 1.

One-Time Charge: Customers who pay a one-time charge for a licensed program receive enhancements and future releases, if any, at no additional charge. Significant new function may be offered as an optional feature and charged for separately. If a replacement program is announced and the customer elects to license the replacement program, a time-based upgrade credit may apply.

Distributed Feature One-Time Charge: Customers who pay a one-time charge for additional distributed features may copy machine-readable program material and documentation. One copy may be made for each additional distributed feature ordered.

Variable Charges: The applicable graduated one-time charge or graduated monthly license charge will be based on the group of the designated machine on which the licensed program is licensed for use. If the program is designated to a processor in a group for which no charge is listed above, the charge of the next higher group listed applies.

For upgrades of one-time charge licenses to a machine in a higher group, the upgrade charge will be the difference in the then current charges between the two groups. For downgrades of one-time charge licenses to a machine in a lower group, there will be no adjustment or refund of one-time charges paid.

For upgrades or downgrades of monthly license charge licenses, the monthly license charge applicable to the higher or lower group will apply.

Entry Support License One-Time Charge: One-time charge authorizes use only on IBM Entry End User/390 Machines.
