DESCRIPTION

All output is spooled by JES and can be controlled by JES operator commands. Printers are controlled using ISPF dialogs to issue JES and JES/328X operator commands. Use of the JES/328X subsystem interface (SSI) can reduce use of the host processing unit. An unlimited number of printers can be defined in one JES/328X address space. To increase the performance of high-speed printers, output buffers of up to 99,999 bytes can be specified.

Printers can be shared with other applications. Printers supported by JES/328X can be defined to the information center facility of TSO/E, Release 3. Output from GDDM(R) 2.1, or later, may be written into JES spool. The IPDS data stream is supported if the user creates the data stream in JES/328X PASSTHRU format.

Enhanced forms control is supported for SNA printers by means of an FCB extension. There is no limit on line length. Confidential print jobs can bypass JES spool. Output can be routed to the printers by several methods:

  • MVS JCL
  • TSO ALLOCATE command
  • JES/328X DSPRINT command
  • GDDM 2.1 directly into JES2 or JES3 spool
The MVS operator can issue JES/328X commands via the MVS MODIFY (F) command. JES/328X supports temporary dynamic addition, modification, and deletion of printers. Large JES2 and JES3 buffers reduce the overhead on JES and VTAM(R). Selection of the translation technique, including Text, APL, and Katakana, is automatically set for a data set from the UCS parameter in JCL or the DSPRINT command. Double-byte character stream (KANJI) is supported. National Language Support (NLS) is available for installations that need to tailor their own translation tables.

An internal trace can be activated as a tool for problem determination. If a print job is backspaced, a separator page will be printed after the backspace message, and a summary sheet will be printed. JES/328X supports compression for printers and control units with that capability. A full-function DSPRINT command allows TSO users to print data sets on remote printers. It may be specified as the default print function for a printer that has been defined to the information center facility of TSO Extensions, Release 3. APL is supported using either the 3800 APL character set (JES/328X translates to 3270 data stream), or a 3270 data stream provided by the user.

The FCB extensions allow an installation to specify an FCB default for each printer. Graphics produced by GDDM can be captured and passed through JES2 or JES3 spool. JES spool pass-through through an exit enables an installation to support other devices, such as plotters. No modifications to JES2 or JES3 are required.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements: The program supports four generic types of printers called families of printers. Each family shares the same characteristics through the compatibility built into the succeeding printers when they replace the previous printer. The families are defined as follows:

FAM1 Family 1 is based on the 3286 printer.
This printer provides a minimal set of control
characters, such as New Line (NL) and Line
Feed (LF). It does not provide a Carriage
          Return (CR).

FAM2 Family 2 is based on the 3287 printer. This printer adds the CR and introduces an automatic NL when it senses that the next character is at line position 133.

FAM3 Family 3 is based on the 3289 printer. This printer requires that a NL be sent in the data stream, and is not sensitive to position 133.

FAM4 Family 4 is based on the 4245 printer. This printer adds support compression and compaction.

Family Family-Compatible Printers

FAM1 3286, 3262-2C

FAM2 3287, 3112, 3116, 3812, 3816, 3912, 3916, 3830, 4028, 4224, 4230, 4232, 4234, 5553, 3262-2C, 6408, 6412

FAM3 3289, 3262-1C, 3268

FAM4 4245, 6262 Devices Supported

Notes

  1. Any device that is compatible with the above is supported.
  2. APL/text and Katakana features are supported.
  3. Single-sheet feed can be accommodated in the printer definition parameters.
  4. The 3262 Line Printer support includes the 128-character text belt.
  5. IPDS is the family of printers using the Intelligent Printer Data Stream.
  6. The 3286DA and 3287DA are for devices attached to a 3271/3272 with the data analysis feature.
  7. The 3287ARAB and 4214ESP printer translation techniques are still supported (for details refer to IBM 3270 Information Display System, GC11-6054).

For other National Language Support, external translation tables can be added by the installation.

Software Requirements: JES/328X has been validated with and supports the following programs or subsequent releases unless otherwise notified:

    • ISPF Version 2 Release 1.2 for MVS/XA(TM) (5665-319)
    • ISPF/PDF Version 2 Release 1.2 for MVS (5665-317)
    • Requires PDF to browse ISPF panels
  • Graphic Data Display Manager (GDDM) Version 1 Release 4 (5748-XXH)

  • Graphic Data Display Manager (GDDM) Version 2 Release 1 (5665-356)

  • VS APL (5748-AP1)
Limitations
  1. Hardware implementation of the 3287 when used as an LU Type 0 or 3 causes an automatic NL to occur when print position 132 is filled. This NL occurs without reference to the subsequent character in the buffer; therefore, a CR to overwrite a line with print position 132 non-blank will print on the next line. Any lines shorter than 132 will overwrite correctly.

  2. Overwriting will not occur on a 3284 Printer, a 3286 Printer, or a 3288 Line Printer because CR is not implemented.

  3. JES/328X does not support GDF graphics data.

  4. JES/328X must be shut down before VTAM is shut down.

  5. JES/328X processes FCBs in the same way for JES2 and JES3 systems. This means that the JES2 restriction for channel one on position one (refer to Information APAR II02481) also applies to JES3 systems.

  6. JES/328X does not validate the FCB extension for structure or valid SNA control strings. It is the user's responsibility to define valid FCB extensions to enable JES/328X to support SCS forms control on SNA printers.

  7. Users with MVS/370 systems cannot use JES/328X Version 3, but must use Version 2 Release 2.
