(Corrected on September 19, 1995) Additional information added to Software Requirements. Bill-of-forms number under Unlicensed Documentation corrected to SBOF-8514.
(Corrected on June 22, 1995) The first sentence in the Software
Requirements section has been revised.
In Brief . . .
RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0 offers two major enhancements that greatly expand your print/connect options.
- 31-bit addressing enables RSCS to use storage above the 16Meg line
which permits expansion of networks to more links.
- A socket interface and three TCP/IP line drivers allow RSCS to utilize a TCP/IP network.
IBM Remote Spooling Communications Subsystem (RSCS) Version 3 Release 2.0 offers two major enhancements in the areas of connectivity to Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networks and system management. These enhancements greatly expand your print/connect options.
- 31-bit addressing enables RSCS to use storage above the 16Meg line. This allows you to expand your network to many additional links. The current RSCS (Version 3 Release 1.1) has a storage constraint that requires multiple RSCS servers to accomplish this. These constraints will be removed in the new release.
- Three TCP/IP line drivers allow RSCS to utilize a TCP/IP network:
- A line driver providing the ability to allow Network Job Entry (NJE) traffic to flow over a TCP/IP network from RSCS to another NJE node.
- A line driver to transmit RSCS print output to ASCII printers attached to terminal servers within a TCP/IP network. This can be used to support workstation printers utilizing TCP/IP as the transport medium.
- A LPR driver to send datastreams to a TCP/IP line printer daemon for distribution or printing. This provides a gateway from any network to an IP print daemon.
In the client/server arena, where host access to local area networks (LANs) and LAN access to hosts is essential, RSCS has provided the ability for the customer to rightsize their environment with the right mix of host and LAN processing, giving their users the flexibility to print and send data using a TCP/IP network.
This release of RSCS supports only VM/ESA (R) ESA, and will not run in the VM/ESA 370 mode.
Note: The LPD driver previously announced in Software Announcement 294-525, dated September 13, 1994, as being available in RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0, will not be available at the general availability date as planned. The LPD driver will now be delivered at a time prior to December 31, 1995, and delivered via an APAR (VM59347). At this time, all RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0 customers of record will be notified that the associated APAR/PTF number is available. This APAR will also be included on the next available RSU (Request for Service Update) tape that follows the LPD availability.
Note: RSCS Version 3 Release 1.0 will be withdrawn from marketing and will no longer be orderable effective October 31, 1995. See Current Licensees section for features being withdrawn.
RSCS Version 3 Release 1.1 will remain orderable for those customers who need to run RSCS in a 370-mode virtual machine.
Planned Availability Date: October 27, 1995

31-bit Addressing:
RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0 will provide 31-bit addressing and allow RSCS to now use storage above the 16Meg line. The current RSCS Version 3.1.1 has a storage constraint that requires customers to use multiple RSCS servers to define their network. This support will extend RSCS to use 31-bit addressing for all possible data areas and for all I/O areas and allow customers to define more links in their RSCS machine.
Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) socket interface:
Providing a TCP/IP socket interface and three line drivers will allow RSCS to utilize a TCP/IP network. The three line drivers are:
- A line driver providing the ability to allow Network Job Entry
(NJE) traffic to flow over a TCP/IP network from RSCS to another
NJE node.
- A line driver to transmit RSCS print output to ASCII printers
attached to terminal servers within a TCP/IP network. This can be
used to support workstation printers utilizing TCP/IP as the
transport medium.
- A LPR driver to send datastreams to a TCP/IP line printer daemon for distribution or printing. This provides a gateway from any network to an IP print daemon.
Specified Operating Environment
RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0 uses only existing attachment interfaces.
Hardware Requirements: RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0 will support the same hardware as RSCS Version 3 Releases 1.0 and 1.1.
Software Requirements: RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0 will install on systems running VM/ESA (5684-112) Version 1 Release 2.1 or later, and VM/ESA (5654-030) Version 2 Release 1.0. To realize the benefit of the TCP/IP function provided in this new release of RSCS, the customer is required to also have TCP/IP for VM (5735-FAL) Version 2 Release 2.0 or later installed on their VM/ESA system. For information regarding TCP/IP for VM, refer to Software Announcement 294-526, dated September 13, 1994.
To use SNA communications, RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0 requires one of the following releases of VTAM:
- ACF/VTAM for VM/ESA Version 3 Release 4 (5684-095), or later
- ACF/VTAM for VM/ESA Version 4 Release 2 (5654-010), or later
Limitations: RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0 will not install on any level of VM prior to VM/ESA ESA Version 1 Release 2.1. This includes VM/SP, VM/SP HPO, VM/XA (TM) SP, and VM/ESA 370 Version 1 Release 1.5. RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0 will not run in a 370-mode machine; if it is brought up in a 370-mode virtual machine or on a back-level release, it will issue an error message and terminate.
With the announcement of RSCS Version 3 Release 1.1 (Software Announcement 293-272, dated May 20, 1993), preventive service is no longer available on the VM Program Update Tape (PUT). Preventive service will be provided via periodic VM Recommended Service Upgrade (RSU) tapes for RSCS Version 3 Release 2.0. Corrective service will be available from the IBM Support Center, and via IBMLink (TM) for those eligible to use it.
