In Brief . . .

  • Provides fast alternative to Emergency Restart (ERE) failure recovery

  • Provides information necessary to prepare for IMS cold start

  • Supports various IMS/ESA environments

  • Provides easy-to-use job setup and run procedures

IMS/ESA (R) Data Entry Databases (DEDB) Fast Recovery is an MVS/ESA (TM) batch program that assists technical support personnel in the operation and maintenance of IMS/ESA Version 3 or IMS/ESA Version 4. It is designed as a fast alternative for IMS Emergency Restart (ERE) failure recovery and other situations where DEDBs must be recovered.

For example, when users must perform an unscheduled IMS cold start due to an IMS/ESA restart failure, all DEDBs must be recovered prior to the IMS cold start. For the user with many DEDB areas, several hours or even days may be needed to recover the DEDBs using the DB Recovery utility. IMS/ESA DEDB Fast Recovery provides a simple and easy job procedure that can considerably reduce the time to recover DEDBs.

The utility performs the following functions:

  • Recovers and closes the online log data sets (OLDSs) that were being used when IMS failed.

  • Recovers all DEDBs that were active when IMS failed.

  • Provides the information necessary to perform an IMS cold start while maintaining database integrity.

DESCRIPTION

  • Provides fast alternative to ERE failure recovery

IMS/ESA DEDB Fast Recovery can recover DEDBs in minutes, while using the DB Recovery utility may take hours or even days to recover the necessary resources prior to the IMS cold start.

The following functions are performed as done by the IMS Emergency restart:

    • Close the online log datasets (OLDSs)

    • Recover all necessary DEDBs

    • Notify Database Recovery Control (DBRC) with necessary information
  • Provides information necessary to prepare for the IMS cold start

IMS/ESA DEDB Fast Recovery generates the following lists from which the user can identify the necessary actions to perform prior to the IMS cold start:

    • Database and area status for recovery

    • Applications for backout

    • Snap dumps of the recovered area CIs
  • Supports various IMS/ESA environments
    • Multiple Area Datasets

    • Block Level Shared Areas

IMS/ESA DEDB Fast Recovery can run without interfering with another active sharing IMS subsystems. Shared areas do not need to be stopped and separated from the active IMS sharing subsystems.

    • XRF environments

    • Situations where DBRC RECON dataset is not available
  • Provides easy to use Job setup and run procedures
    • Utility runs as one MVS job task step

    • JCL is similar to IMS online system JCL and can be prepared in advance
