Abstract

NetView(R) File Transfer Program (FTP) Server for AIX(R), and NetView File Transfer Program (FTP) Client for AIX are programs that provide high-speed file transfer services within wide area and local area networks (WANs and LANs).

NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX offer file-transfer functions at the workstation where they are installed. NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX also serves as a gateway between NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX programs and other NetView FTP SNA nodes. NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX programs use TCP/IP as communication protocol with the NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX.

NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX:

  • Provide high-speed file transfer within wide area as well as local area networks
  • Perform automatic restart of interrupted file transfer operations
  • Transfer files from one storage device to another without intermediate spooling
  • Offer an easy to use X/Motif** user interface, SMIT menu entries, and a command-line interface
The products of the NetView File Transfer Family are also available on MVS, VM, VSE, OS/400(R), and OS/2(R) platforms.

DESCRIPTION

Customer Service Improvements

Many customers continue to exchange data between host and AIX by sending diskettes via mail or courier. NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX provide a secured and automated way to collect sales data and production data distribution. This allows customers to have complete data in a form that is needed and easy to manipulate.

Integration of Business Solutions

NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX enhance the NetView FTP family with another client/server solution by offering the capability to exchange files with NetView FTP for MVS Version 2.2.

Access to Enterprise Data

NetView FTP Server for AIX and NetView FTP Client for AIX access files directly (direct fetch and store) without loading data into a repository at the source node before transferring it or unloading data from a repository after transferring it to the target node. This enables NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX to avoid the additional space required for intermediate spooling of data. The operating systems can refer to the files that are transferred by their original names.

Connectivity Improvements

By following the client/server concept, NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX improve the NetView FTP connectivity to AIX/6000(TM) workstations. Users can transfer files to and from a single source node to a single target node (point-to-point); the source node or target node can be either a NetView FTP Server for AIX or NetView FTP Client for AIX. NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX uses SNA LU6.2 services to communicate with other NetView FTP programs and Transmission Control Protocol/Interconnect Protocol (TCP/IP) to communicate with NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX.

Increased Capacity/Performance

NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX provide effective data compression. Data compression speeds transmission, and this results in reduced link costs.

Reduced Environmental Requirements

Sending and receiving systems do not require the same operating system. Files being received do not have the same file type as the files that have been sent. This means that transferred files do not have to be accessed and processed again by an additional program after transmission, in order to define a file type. Files do not have to be stored temporarily. This saves disk space at least on receiving nodes.

Improved Worker Productivity

NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX offer

  • An X/Motif graphical user interface based on CUA(TM) standards which allows users to issue file transfer requests
  • A command line interface that lets users initiate file transfers from the command prompt
  • SMIT menu entries that let users initiate file transfers via SMIT
Security improvements

NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX verify the access rights to a file on the remote system by simulating a remote login. NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX reduce the risk of data loss during transfers by automatically restarting file transfer operations that have been interrupted by failures. When a restart is performed, NetView FTP resumes the transfer from a previously written checkpoint. Data that already has been stored at the target node does not have to be resent.

Asset Protection

NetView FTP provides asset protection by enhancing the NetView FTP connectivity to RISC System/6000.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

NetView FTP Server Version 1 for AIX and NetView FTP Client Version 1 for AIX offer a very efficacious capability of exchanging large amount of data between AIX and host (MVS) NetView FTP's efficiency is based on:

  • Direct fetch and store capability (no intermediate spooling)
  • Peer-to-peer support versus master-slave relationship
  • Very effective data compression
  • Checkpoint/restart support
  • File type conversion supported, for example disk to tape, sequential to PDS member
Typical potential file transfer applications are:
  • Banks wanting to exchange financial data, for example between central site and branch offices, or between a bank institute and a clearing bank
  • Manufacturing companies exchanging production data between different plants or between a company and their suppliers
  • Data processing center wanting to send data from test system to the production system, or from production to a security Data processing center (backup copies for vital data)
  • Customer wanting to retrieve applications from a central node to his system
  • Larger node with operator support may be used to retrieve disk datasets from smaller nodes, without operator, onto tapes.
