In Brief . . .

Netview Performance Monitor (NPM) Version 2 Release 2:

  • Expands NPM's capabilities to provide NetWare resource performance monitoring while enhancing its established capabilities of network, session, and LAN monitoring.

  • Utilizes Multipath Channel (MPC) support, a function that is available with ACF/VTAM (TM) Version 4 Release 1. NPM is able to provide VTAM statistics data for host-to-host communication that uses multiple write-direction, read-direction sub-channels.

  • Extends the innovative concept in performance management of the easy-to-use NPM Desk/2 graphical user interface with the new NetWare resources data collection.

  • Improves the NPM Desk/2 capability to export data to spreadsheet products.

  • Enhances the synergy among NetView Graphic Monitor Facility (GMF), NetView MultiSystem Manager, and NPM for NetWare resources.

  • Supports the OEM multisession manager TPX (Terminal Productivity Executive).

  • Enables session collection for specified LU 6.2 protocol.

NetView (R) Performance Monitor (NPM) manages performance and accounting data for your communications networks. By adding support to monitor NetWare** resources, NPM Version 2 Release 2 extends its capability in the LAN environment. As with other data that NPM monitors, alerts are sent to NetView based on thresholds set for NetWare resources being monitored.

NPM Version 2 Release 2 has also increased its support of multisession manager products. It has added support for the OEM multisession manager TPX** (Terminal Productivity Executive) in the MVS environment. This function will be available before the end of September 1994 through a program temporary fix (PTF). Additionally, the session collection capability of NPM Version 2 Release 2 is enhanced to include support for certain types of LU 6.2 sessions.

NPM utilizes many of the functions within NetView, NCP, LAN Manager, and LAN Network Manager to gather network performance information. This information enables you to pro-actively manage your network. With NPM Desk/2 and the expanded performance data, NPM Version 2 Release 2 offers an easy-to-use tool that encompasses network, session, LAN, and VTAM (R) performance information from a single workstation.

IBM is committed to on-going quality. NPM Version 2 Release 2 is the latest in a series of NPM shipments, each with improved quality for greater availability for managing and maintaining your critical network and systems services. NPM continues to expand its quality programs and goals. A major component of this approach is customer participation in validating the product's quality. IBM has been working directly with customers to ensure the usability and quality of these functional enhancements. Early testing of NPM Version 2 Release 2 functions was performed with selected customers.

DESCRIPTION

NPM Version 2 Release 2 provides monitoring of NetWare resources on both MVS and VM operating systems. It collects hardware performance and error reporting statistical data for NetWare Servers and NetWare External Routers. Resource utilization data is provided for the following components:

  • CPU
  • User Connections
  • Disk Activity
  • Server Volumes
  • Transactions
  • Routing
  • Board Drivers
  • IPX/SPX Communication
Collection counters are provided for more than 100 data elements.

The session collection capability of NPM Version 2 Release 2 is enhanced to provide transit-time measurements for VTAM applications using LU 6.2 sessions.

The above measurements are dependent upon the use of the CONFIRM/CONFIRMED verbs on the APPC protocol.

For each LU 6.2 session, NPM computes Operator, Host, and Network Transit Times, as follows:

Host Transit Time Reflects the time the host application
was active and not waiting upon a
                       CONFIRM

Network Transit Time Reflects the sum of the elapsed times of the outbound PIUs that requested a response; notice that APPC applications send responses when a CONFIRM has been requested

Operator Transit Time Reflects the elapsed time from the start to the end of a conversation

The export and printing data function of the NPM Desk/2 end-user interface has been improved. With this new capability, it is possible to create files with a CSV (Comma Separated Variables) file type. Customers can easily import NPM collected data for further processing in spreadsheet products that allow use of CSV files. And, with the improved printing function, customers can easily print or store DataView data in table format.

Improved Systems Availability

By monitoring key information relative to NetWare resources, NPM provides the user with the necessary data to tune and optimize the overall performance of the network.

Understanding the usage of the NetWare resources allows for better utilization and performance management of NetWare resources.

This data can aid in determining system resource usage by the applications and the activity of the specific applications in order to efficiently manage system performance.

IS Operations Productivity

With the expanded support of NetWare resources, NPM provides network, session, LAN, and VTAM monitoring from one product on a single workstation (NPM Desk/2). NPM correlates the VTAM information with other information it has collected about NCP and SNA sessions, and provides the same types of functions for real-time monitoring, data logging, and reporting for this new NetWare resources information.

Environmental Requirements

By providing NetWare resource data information, such as NetWare Server utilization and Novell External Router utilization, NPM provides the data to aid in the managing of NetWare resources. Customers can better manage the fast growing Client/Server environment when based on NetWare resource. Managing this environment from a mainframe allows customers to expand very easily.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

NPM provides the necessary information associated with a customer's communications network that is needed for performance management, network accounting, and problem determination. Customers using NetView, ACF/VTAM, ACF/NCP, LAN Manager, LAN Network Manager, and NetWare can realize the benefits of managing the performance of their networks using NPM. NPM Version 2 exploits the graphic command support of NetView Version 2 Release 3, allowing users the ability to use the NPM functions from the NetView Graphics Monitor Facility workstation. NPM is evolving to meet user's changing management needs.

EDUCATION SUPPORT

The appropriate curriculum will be updated, as necessary, to include the enhancements in this announcement.

Compatibility: NPM Version 2 is supported only in conjunction with other NPM Version 2 licensed programs for NPM to NPM communications. NPM to NPM communication is not supported between NPM Version 1 and NPM Version 2.

User-Group Requirements: Standard for Quality Systems: NPM is produced by IBM Semea S.p.A. Rome Networking Software Laboratory (RNSL), which is certified as compliant to ISO9001 (Standards for Quality Systems).

Security, Auditability, and Control

The announced program uses the security and auditability features of both NPM and RACF.

The security and auditability features of the announced program are:

  • Minimal -- NPM only checks the operator ID to see if it is identified to NPM and not already logged on.

  • Normal -- NPM checks operator ID, password, and profile. The profile can limit what the operator is allowed to do.

  • RACF -- RACF checks operator ID and password. The profile is checked by NPM.

  • User -- This security option allows an NPM user exit routine to be written to provide special ID and password validation, or it may be written to invoke an OEM security routine, other than RACF.
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
