Abstract

Today, IBM is announcing significant advances in its Data Replication products. Most importantly, data on the mainframe, in IMS/ESA(R) or DB2(R) (MVS, VM) or VSAM flat files, can now be replicated to DB2/2(TM), DB2/6000(TM) and DB2/400, so that workstation users can access local replicas of mainframe data. The administration of the powerful new facilities can be performed directly from a workstation anywhere in the enterprise.

With today's announcements, IBM's Data Replication products will provide:

  • Support for open Client/Server solutions, involving data which may be replicated across all IBM platforms
  • End-to-end data replication from legacy data stores to the workstation relational environments
  • Automation of the replication process
  • Interoperability between the data replication products
  • Intuitive graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for ease of administration from a workstation control point
DataPropagator NonRelational Version 2 builds on the established function of Version 1, which maintains the consistency of an IMS Database Manager copy and a DB2 copy of the same data by ensuring that they are both updated simultaneously (or synchronously). Version 2 provides asynchronous replication of an IMS database to DB2 tables.

DataPropagator Relational Version 1 provides a powerful new automated asynchronous replication capability from DB2 and from DB2/400 (see Software Announcement 294-232 for details) to DB2, DB2/2, DB2/400 and DB2/6000. DataPropagator Relational is a set of six products that provides the flexibility of choosing the source(s) and target(s) databases for replication.

DataRefresher Version 1 provides the capability to move large amounts of data between multiple source and target types administered from an all new, workstation-based, graphical user interface.

DESCRIPTION

Data Replication

IBM's Data Replication products provide a flexible, enterprise-wide solution to a company's replication requirements. Product configurations are flexible to accommodate multiple data source(s) and target(s) and the frequency of replication executions with easy to use administrative functions. These products working together provide a unique set of functions for leveraging legacy data across an enterprise, whether it is mainframe or Client/Server-oriented. Data Replication products provide robust data enhancement capabilities with underlying cost effective technology.

DataPropagator NonRelational Version 2

DataPropagator NonRelational propagates changed data from IMS to DB2 and/or from DB2 to IMS. Data Propagator(TM) Version 1 Release 1 and 2 provided the ability to update a DB2 database copy of an IMS database simultaneously with the source database update, or in reverse; that is, two-way synchronous propagation between IMS and DB2. DataPropagator NonRelational Version 2 enhancements include asynchronous propagation from IMS to DB2, that is, the ability to update a DB2 database copy of an IMS database at user-specified intervals. These copies can be independent of the source IMS database update, thus improved performance on operational systems.

The coexistence of IMS and DB2 applications is maintained with DataPropagator NonRelational. IMS applications can access the IMS data copy through the IMS DL/I call interface. DB2 applications on MVS can access the DB2 MVS copy of the same data through the DB2 SQL interface.

DataPropagator Relational Version 1

DataPropagator Relational automatically copies data within and between DB2, DB2/2, DB2/400 (see Software Announcement 294-232 for details) and DB2/6000 databases. (DB2/2 and DB2/6000 databases are only supported as sources for other DB2/2 and DB2/6000 targets, respectively.)

DataPropagator Relational copying may involve transferring the entire contents of a user table (refresh) or transferring only the changes that have occurred since the last copy (update). (Only refresh capability is supported from DB2/2 and DB2/6000 sources.) DataPropagator Relational automatically chooses the appropriate algorithm for better efficiency and performance, while also allowing an override option.

DataPropagator Relational captures the changes and then propagates them to the target tables at user-defined intervals.

With DataPropagator Relational, users can significantly enhance the copy requests to subset, derive, or aggregate copied data. DataPropagator Relational supports the unrestricted use of Structured Query Language (SQL) predicates and column functions in the definition of copy requests. Users can enhance the copy requests to subset, derive, or aggregate copied data.

DataPropagator Relational provides an intuitive, graphical user interface that is integrated with DataHub/2 (platform base feature). Users can easily easy define what data is to be copied, where it is to be copied, how often it is to be copied, and what processing is to be performed on the copy. DataPropagator Relational leverages DataHub's ability to display database objects for identifying source tables, registering copy sources, defining replication requests, and granting authorizations.

DataPropagator Relational maintains data security of source data, through registration of replication sources, while granting end-users the ability to define their replication requests.

DataRefresher Version 1

DataRefresher Version 1 builds on the established refresh functions already available in its predecessor Data Extract (DXT(TM)) Version 2 Release 5.

DataRefresher provides the capability of moving large amounts of data from multiple sources to multiple targets, with an intuitive, graphical user interface. This user interface is also integrated with IBM DataHub/2 (platform base feature) enabling the administration of data replication from a single point of control. Users define the sources, targets and extract requests from a large range of sources and targets.

DataRefresher supports the following sources: IMS databases, Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM) data sets, Physical Sequential data sets, Physical Sequential data sets in Integration Exchange Format (IXF), DB2 MVS, and DB2/VM (SQL/DS(TM)). Additional sources can be accessed via a user-written Generic Data Interface (GDI).

DataRefresher supports the following targets: DB2 tables, Physical Sequential data sets, Physical Sequential data sets in Integration Exchange Format (IXF), CMS files, CMS files in IXF, DB2/VM (SQL/DS), DB2/VSE (SQL/DS), and AS/400(R) physical data files. Additional targets can be supported via a user-written Generic Output Interface (GOI). DataRefresher output can also be loaded into DB2/2 and DB2/6000.

DataRefresher provides other usability enhancements including:

  • Registration of source databases. This feature eliminates the need to define the physical storage locations of source databases for every extraction.
  • Extensive Online Help
  • Automatic generation of database definitions from PL/1 and COBOL structures
  • Visual indication of all objects defined, for example, Sources, Extracts, etc.
  • Drag and drop capability for creating and running extractions from source to targets
  • Reuse of source and extract definitions by DataPropagator NonRelational
Customer Value

Companies are increasing the scope of end-user access to corporate data to accelerate decision making and improve business effectiveness. IBM's data replication products support the evolution of sharing data between departments, workgroups, and/or across the entire enterprise. Data Replication makes data available when and where it is needed. Whether copy tables reside on the host or the workstation, local to or remote from the original table, data replication will automatically copy needed data to the target.

Investment Protection

Client/Server and decision support applications can now share an important asset, the legacy data, throughout the enterprise. Data Replication allows database migration in an orderly fashion. For those customers who wish to migrate some of their applications from mainframes to the workstation environment, data replication provides a structured, low-risk way to achieve this over time. Customers can migrate application components or programs one at a time, while the reliability of the data is protected.

Systems Management

As corporate network traffic increases, the impact on network systems to refresh multiple copies of gigabyte-sized relational tables may not be acceptable. Data Replication products can optionally refresh all of the desired data from the source or transfer, just the changes (update) since the last copy. Copying captured changed data minimizes access to the user table and reduces impact to production application performance.

End-User Productivity

IBM's data replication products provide an intuitive Graphical User Interface, which significantly reduces the skill level requirements of the administrator who shall perform the replications. The administrator's productivity increases through capabilities such as saving the defined data sources for reuse, default targets, and simple drag and drop techniques.

Data Replication

IBM Data Replication provides business benefit in four key areas:

  • Data Access and reliability separated from the mission-critical operational application. Each type of application has its own unique requirements in terms of: data currency, data consistency and system resource consumption. Decision support users require data that is consistent so that reports and charts can be run and reconciled without the disruption of constantly-changing data altering the results. These applications are often very I/O intensive and could easily degrade response time and throughput if allowed to run against the same data as operational applications. It is often acceptable, if not desirable, for decision support data to be synchronized at hourly, daily or weekly intervals with the operational data. By replicating the operational data to the decision support environment, both types of applications are allowed to function optimally.
  • Data synchronization between today's isolated data stores, both central and Client/Server Mainframes and workstations, servers and requesters are increasingly being seen as resources on the network, where data can and will reside. Today's announcements position IBM's Data Replication tools to support this enterprise-wide, distributed environment. The most effective data topology can now be chosen, and maintained in a simple and cost-effective manner. Copying data between all IBM's relational databases is supported. Data can be easily copied from legacy data stores such as IMS and VSAM to all of IBM's relational databases whether centralized or distributed. These functions are provided through a complementary set of tools.
  • Administration control across host and LAN databases through a single workstation As the locations of data become more dispersed, there is a growing need for a single point for the administration and control of the various Data Replication processes. The administrator's tasks are thus simplified, and existing skills leveraged across multiple database types and locations. Today's announcements take further significant steps towards such a single administrative control point based on the intuitive, workstation-based graphical approach.
  • Tailored expansion in the uses of the data Historical trend data is vital to business planning. With the data replication products announced today, both centralized and Client/Server databases can reflect data changes in IMS, and DB2 using the most appropriate and efficient techniques, thus ensuring that data necessary to run a business is available when required. Transforming data into usable information for users is key to benefiting from existing data stores. New data enhancement function provided in the products announced today supports this transformation.
PRODUCT POSITIONING

IBM's data replication products address refresh, update, enhancement and administration requirements. Each product is characterized by the primary function it provides and this may be qualified by the type of DBMS it supports.

DataHub/2 provides the administrative point of control for an integrated data replication solution spanning central and distributed environments. Administrative function that is unique to products such as DataRefresher and DataPropagator Relational Version 1, is visually integrated into the DataHub/2 user interface when present on the same workstation.

Data Replication can be positioned as:

  • Building Information Warehouse(TM)(s) for decision support and executive information systems.
  • Offloading query processing from productions systems for the purposes of either reducing production table contention and/or reducing production CPU utilization.
  • Downsizing applications or building Client/Server applications, yet requiring shared data with legacy systems.
DataPropagator Relational Version 1 is the product for a comprehensive data replication solution based on DRDA(TM) within a relational environment, providing refresh, update and enhancement capabilities between DB2, DB2/2, DB2/400 and DB2/6000 databases. DataPropagator Relational Version 1 is particularly suitable for providing refresh/update for data on a repetitive basis because it provides an automated replication initiation facility which enables a user to specify how often and how many times a replication operation is to be performed.

DataRefresher can be positioned as providing an initial full refresh of data required for further propagation by DataPropagator NonRelational and DataPropagator Relational DataRefresher provides a comprehensive set of functions to refresh relational databases, both central and Client/Server, from legacy applications on MVS, based on IMS, VSAM and sequential files. Generic input and output structures allows data to be expanded to a wide variety of sources and targets, while the administrative interface provides an intuitive GUI-based approach to the definition of the data sources, targets and their relationships.

DataPropagator NonRelational can be positioned as the product to propagate IMS data asynchronously to DB2, and with DataPropagator Relational to the workstation databases.
