Cooperative Processing: Cooperative processing improves programming productivity, efficiency, and flexibility by allowing an application to share a variable directly with an APL or non-APL application anywhere else on a network and also to control a remote APL2 session from another APL or non-APL application.
Growth Enablement
IBM APL2 is designed to support growth of the customer's business and provide for fast response to customer business requirements.
The availability of APL2 on new platforms, and the extensive degree of cross-system communication and compatibility across the IBM APL2 platforms, allows customer applications to grow in a very flexible manner. Applications run on one platform, or can be distributed across several platforms.
Extensions to Auxiliary Processors: These extensions allow for easier migration between APL2 platform products and increased cross-system application portability.
User Productivity
APL2 is designed to enhance a customer's productivity through a choice of platforms and extensive system integration.
Users who write applications for multiple platforms should find APL2 Version 2 Release 2 to be more compatible with other IBM APL2 platform products, thus reducing the need for application-specific code.
All users of mainframe APL2 platforms can benefit from the new function provided by extensions to the APL2 language, auxiliary processors, and supplied routines.
Statement Separator: This extension allows for easier migration between IBM APL2 platform products and increased cross-system application portability.
Investment Protection
APL2 Version 2 Release 2 features are designed to simplify migration of code and applications across platforms and to increase cross-system compatibility with PC and workstation APL2 products. Applications can be moved between platforms and distributed across platforms, giving optimum flexibility to each installation as they change their computer hardware.
Cross-System Compatibility: IBM APL2 Version 2 Release 2 enhances the mainframe APL2 system to provide extended cross-system compatibility and cooperative processing with other IBM APL2 platform products. Cooperative processing is now available across TCP/IP-connected IBM APL2 systems running on VM, MVS, AIX/6000, OS/2, and Sun Solaris.
Business Solutions
APL2 provides a very effective means for developing business solutions rapidly, and the flexibility to create these solutions on one system or distributed systems. APL2 has interfaces to other products and parts of the system which allow it to be used to connect data and programs from outside APL2 as well.
PRODUCT POSITIONING
APL2 is a high-productivity, general-purpose programming language useful to application developers and interactive end users.
APL2 Application Environment is a run-time facility that enables an APL user to run pre-developed APL2 applications without requiring the complete APL2 product.
APL2 Version 2 enhances the mainframe APL2 system to provide extended cross-system compatibility and cooperative processing across a wide variety of platforms: VM, MVS, AIX (R), Sun Solaris, and OS/2.
The current availability and status of APL2 education offerings are available by calling Skill Dynamics (TM), An IBM Company, at 800-IBM-TEACH (426-8322) for schedules and enrollments.
Specified Operating Environment
This product uses only existing attachment interfaces.
Hardware Requirements:
IBM APL2 and APL2 Application Environment execute on any IBM System/370 (TM) and System/390 (R) that includes the extended floating point feature and meets minimum storage requirements. Processors, such as the 937X, 43XX, ES/9000 (TM), and 30XX can meet these requirements. APL2 utilizes the IBM 3090 (TM) and ES/9000 Vector Facility, and System/370 and System/390 Mathematical Assists where available. Sufficient storage must be available to meet the needs of APL2, the host operating system, and other programs that share the storage.
APL2 is designed to run on the IBM 3270 Information Display System family of products with the appropriate APL feature. APL2 should also run on other functionally equivalent terminal emulators.
APL2 cooperative processing facilities include a shared variable interpreter interface which supports connection to a session manager running elsewhere on a TCP/IP network. The session managers included in the workstation APL2 products can be used to control an APL2 interpreter on the mainframe.
Software Requirements: APL2 will run under the following operating systems and subsystems, and their subsequent versions/releases, unless otherwise announced by IBM:
- MVS/ESA (TM) SP Version 4 Release 1 with TSO/E (5695-047 OR 5695-048)

Resources:
- VM/SP Environment
APL2 can be executed from shared segments. Approximately 1.25MB is required for the APL2 shared segments. Each user's virtual machine requires at least 2MB of virtual storage.
When APL2 is not executed from a VM/SP shared segment, each user should have a virtual machine with at least 3MB.
- VM/XA and VM/ESA Environment
In a VM/XA and VM/ESA environment, all of the APL2 virtual storage requirements, except approximately 0.5MB, can be satisfied from storage above the 16MB line. Approximately 80% of the shared segment usage can be moved to this storage.
- MVS/370 Environment
APL2 can be executed from the MVS Link Pack Area (LPA). When this is done, approximately 1.5MB are required for the APL2 modules.
An APL2 system in the LPA requires a region size of at least 1MB of virtual storage for each TSO user.
When LPA is not being utilized, each TSO user should have a region with at least 2MB of storage.
- MVS/XA (TM) and MVS/ESA Environment
In an MVS/XA and MVS/ESA environment, all of the APL2 virtual storage requirements, except approximately 0.5MB, can be satisfied from storage above the 16MB line. Approximately two-thirds of the LPA usage can be moved to extended LPA.
APL2 Version 2 is designed to be upward compatible from APL2 Version 1 and VSAPL. However, some VSAPL applications that use special programming techniques and internal character coding will require modifications in order to run with APL2. The full APL2 Version 2 product is required for the migration process from VSAPL.
APL2 Application Environment is a run-time facility of APL2 Version 2 and does not provide Application Development (TM) support. It is limited to running pre-developed APL2 applications and APL2-based products.
Migration:
- Workspace Format -- The internal format of the workspace in APL2
Version 2 Release 2 is forward and backward compatible with APL2
Version 2 Release 1 but is different from Version 1. A workspace
saved under Version 1 will be automatically converted to the new
format during )LOAD or )COPY.
- Backward migration of workspace from APL2 Version 2 to earlier
versions cannot be accomplished with the )LOAD and )COPY commands.
To migrate a workspace backward from APL2 Version 2, use the )OUT
command in APL2 Version 2 to create a transfer form file and the
command )IN in the prior version to receive it.
- The APL2 Migration Guide contains guidelines and procedures for transferring workspaces and adapting VSAPL programs, user-written auxiliary processors, and files to APL2.
