Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability

IBM announces a set of 13 fonts to support APL and APL2 printing
applications on the IBM 3800 Printing Subsystem Model 3 when
supported by Advanced Function Printing software.

Customer Letter Section

APL2 Fonts support printing applications that require the use
of the extended APL2 character set, and provides uniformly spaced
fonts in 10-, 12-, 13.3-, 15-, and 20-pitch variations.
There are two features associated with this licensed program.
For one feature, the font source format feature, the Print Management
Facility licensed program (5665-307) and its prerequisites (or
equivalent programming support) are required in order to read the
installed source materials and to generate the object data before the
fonts can be used on the 3800 Printing Subsystem Model 3.  The Print
Management Facility can also be used to create new page definitions
(PAGEDEFs) and form definitions (FORMDEFs) that may be necessary for
some APL and APL2 printing applications.
The second feature contains the fonts already in the object
format required by the 3800 Printing Subsystem Model 3.
The customer may order either one or both features.
HIGHLIGHTS
*   Two print directions
*   Source format feature
*   Object format feature
*   Print quality
*   Extends the APL character set for APL2 applications
*   May be used at 6 and 8 lines per inch
*   Thirteen uniformly spaced fonts (total) in five different pitches
DESCRIPTION
APL and APL2 printing applications often require special
characters and fonts.  IBM makes available, in two formats, a set of
13 fonts which enable APL and APL2 applications to print on the IBM
3800 Printing Subsystem Model 3 when supported by Advanced Function
Printing software.  Ten of these fonts are also available with the
APL2 licensed program (5668-899) for use on the 3800 Printing
Subsystem Model 3 in Compatibility Mode.  In the APL2 Fonts licensed
program, these same ten fonts have been aesthetically improved and
are provided for use on the 3800 Model 3 running in Advanced Function
Printing mode.  The remaining three fonts offer additional printing
flexibility for APL2 printing applications.  APL printing
applications that do not require the use of special APL2 characters
can also use these fonts.
TWO PRINT DIRECTIONS
In both the source and object features, the fonts are provided
in two print directions:
*   0-degree, ACROSS print direction
*   0-degree, DOWN print direction
The Print Management Facility, or equivalent, may be used with
the source format feature to create other character orientations
and/or print directions.
SOURCE FORMAT FEATURE
The source definitions of 13 fonts, 13 character sets, 49
character groups, and 8 code pages are included in the source format
feature.  Also included are the equivalent definitions for the
0-degree, DOWN print direction for fonts and character sets.
For use in the 0-degree, ACROSS print direction:

The benefits of this feature include:
*   Total flexibility for modifying the definition of each font to
suit the unique requirements of individual users.  The source
definitions for any of the fonts, character sets, character
groups, and code pages can be modified.  Character orientations
and/or print directions can be respecified.  All modifications
require the Print Management Facility licensed program and its
    prerequisites (or equivalent programming support).
*   The source format feature is installable via System Modification
Program Level 4 (SMP4) or System Modification Program Extended
    (SMP/E).
The source definitions are not directly usable by the 3800
Printing Subsystem Model 3.  Following program installation, the
Print Management Facility, or equivalent, is required in order to
read the source definitions and to generate the object format of the
fonts before they can be printed.  Modified source definitions
require the regeneration of the object format.  Users of the Document
Composition Facility Release 3 may need to create a new font index
whenever fonts are modified.
OBJECT FORMAT FEATURE
The object format of 26 fonts, 26 font character sets, and 8
code pages are included in the object format feature.
For use in the 0-degree, ACROSS print direction:
Font      Character   Code Page            Point

X2AP20    C2S0AP20    T1S0AP10    20        5
Since the fonts are already in object format, there is no
requirement for the Print Management Facility and its prerequisites
for building the object format.  Printing can take place immediately
following program installation into the system font library.  (Users
of the Document Composition Facility Release 3 must create a new font
index to include the new fonts.)  However, the Print Management
Facility and its prerequisites may still be required to perform other
functions related to Advanced Function Printing.  Modification of any
font requires the source materials provided in the source format
feature and the regeneration of the object format.  These tasks may
be accomplished via the Print Management Facility, or equivalent
programming.  Font modifications may require a new font index to be
created for users of the Document Composition Facility Release 3.
The object format feature is not installable via the System

Modification Program (SMP).  System installation requires the IEBCOPY
utility program to load a partitioned data set.
PRINT QUALITY
Letter forms were expressly created at a density of 240x240
dots (pels) per inch in order to provide maximum print quality and
aesthetic harmony on the 3800 Printing Subsystem Model 3 when running
in Advanced Function Printing mode.
APL2 PRINT APPLICATIONS
These fonts extend the APL character set by adding eight
characters unique to APL2 printing applications.  Existing APL
applications that do not require the new APL2 characters can also use
these same fonts.
In order to provide complete support, 13 fonts, 13 character
sets, 49 character groups, and 8 code pages are provided for printing
in two print directions.  With the source format feature, the Print
Management Facility licensed program may be used to modify fonts or
define new character orientations and print directions.
SIX AND EIGHT LINES PER INCH PRINTING
APL2 Fonts may be used for printing at either six or eight
lines per inch.
THIRTEEN UNIFORMLY SPACED FONTS (TOTAL) IN FIVE DIFFERENT PITCHES
All APL2 fonts contain uniformly spaced characters.  There are
six 10-pitch fonts, four 12-pitch fonts, one 13.3-pitch font, one
15-pitch font, and one 20-pitch font.  Characters may be in either
roman or italic styles.  The typeface (family) name for these fonts
is APL2.
