Overview
Bottom rule

DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS, V2.1 (5639-OLE) extends the analytic capabilities of the DB2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS with the ability to easily and efficiently bring non-DB2 data from other sources to the Accelerator and IBM z Systems™ servers. The combined use of the Accelerator, z Systems™ servers, and the DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS provides a single location with combined data sources such as IBM IMS™, VSAM, sequential files, and Oracle to deliver faster insights for enhanced decision making and lower storage costs.

DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS, V2.1 provides these benefits:

  • Minimized application impact when loading or refreshing external DB2 for z/OS data by loading in parallel to both DB2 for z/OS and DB2 Analytics Accelerator.
  • Increased flexibility when performing business analytics by enabling the load of a consistent set of data with a historical point-in-time into DB2 Analytics Accelerator for query consideration.
  • A z Systems solution to quickly load data directly to the Accelerator from many different data sources, including IMS, VSAM, sequential files, and Oracle, without the need to land or stage the data in intermediate files. The entire process from data extraction, conversion, and loading is automated in a single batch job step.
  • An easy-to-use SQL interface to identify data to be loaded into the Accelerator, including the ability to join and load data from multiple sources to a single Accelerator table.
  • Potential further reduction in CPU cost associated with data loading into DB2 Analytics Accelerator as DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader directs such processing to be executed under an enclave Service Request Block and such processing is authorized to execute on a zIIP specialty engine 1
  • Support for IBM Change Data Capture for z/OS (CDC) replication when loading to both a DB2 table and an Accelerator table.
  • The ability to append data to an existing table. This LOAD RESUME capability can help to reduce elapsed time and CPU consumption by avoiding the need to reload the entire table to include the new data to be loaded.
  • The ability to automatically create the table on the DB2 Analytics Accelerator if it does not exist and to enable the table for acceleration after the load is successful. This can help to improve user efficiency and may reduce the manual steps required to prepare a table on the appliance for acceleration.
1
This information provides only general descriptions of the types and portions of workloads that are eligible for execution on specialty engines (SEs). IBM authorizes customers to use IBM SEs such as zIIPs, zAAPs, and IFLs only to execute the processing of Eligible Workloads of specific programs expressly authorized by IBM as specified in the Authorized Use Table for IBM Machines (AUT). No other workload processing is authorized for execution on an SE. IBM offers SEs at a lower price than General Processors/Central Processors because customers are authorized to use SEs only to process certain types or amounts of workloads as specified by IBM in the AUT.

Description
Bottom rule

DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS, V2.1 enables you to load operational DB2 for z/OS data into Analytics Accelerator for z/OS. This minimizes the application impact when loading related tables into DB2 Analytics Accelerator. It also gives you the flexibility to specify a historical point-in-time as of which you want a consistent set of data to be loaded into DB2 Analytics Accelerator to meet your business needs. DB2 Analytics Accelerator will use existing recovery assets to establish this consistent point-in-time data and then load it into the Accelerator. All of these features are available from the enhanced and improved task-based ISPF panel interface.

In addition to DB2 for z/OS operational data, you can also load data from external sources with DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader. Sources include data from other DB2 for z/OS systems, such as VSAM and IMS, and non-mainframe data, such as Oracle, to facilitate enterprise business analytics on System z®.

Version 2 introduces a new feature that simplifies the process of mapping the non-DB2 data source and directly loading the data into the Accelerator in a more streamlined and efficient manner. This new feature for loading non-DB2 data sources is supported from a modern GUI. As an alternative, when data has been extracted from another source into a format that is compatible with the IBM DB2 LOAD utility, it can then be loaded into DB2 for z/OS and also into DB2 Analytics Accelerator using the ISPF interface. This type of load operation may be performed in parallel, which may improve availability and reduce system resources, such as CPU.

The DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS allows SQL access to many data sources on and off z/OS for the purposes of loading data into the Accelerator. The initial list of supported data sources includes DB2, VSAM data sets, physical sequential data sets, and distributed relational database architecture (DRDA®) data sources such as Oracle. The data that matches the SQL result set is extracted directly from the data sources and converted into the required format in memory and loaded into the Accelerator in one step. This eliminates the manual process required in the previously announced DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS product.

The entire process of reading the source data, converting it to the necessary format, and loading the data to the Accelerator is performed without landing or staging the data into intermediate datasets. This in-memory process can help to lower the cost of loading data to the Accelerator.

All of the DB2 features from the first DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS product are available from the enhanced and improved task-based ISPF panel interface. Users will still be able to load data directly into the DB2 Analytics Accelerator from a flat file that users created for external data. Users will also still be able to load historic data or consistent data into the Accelerator without impacting production objects.

Support for LOAD RESUME and Change Data Capture (CDC) are among the features included in this new product. The additional non-DB2 data sources are supported from a modern GUI.

LOAD RESUME support has been added to enable appending data to tables on the Accelerator en masse. This capability can help to reduce CPU consumption and elapsed time involved without reloading all table data into the Accelerator.

Integration with CDC has been implemented to enable replicated tables to be loaded in a more streamlined manner. This process improvement enables DBAs to administer all of their tables on the Accelerator in the same manner without treating these tables with exception.

Automated load for non-DB2 and off z/OS data

With DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS, users will be able to load data from sources other than DB2 and from platforms other than z/OS. Using the DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader GUI, users will be able to quickly and efficiently select the data source, map it to the table on the DB2 Analytics Accelerator, and generate JCL to load the data.

Enhanced load from an external file

DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS users will still be able to use a file created by an UNLOAD utility for DB2 data as input into the load process through the ISPF panels. Now users can also use a file compatible with the LOAD utility that contains data from an external source. Users will still be able to optionally load DB2 in parallel with the DB2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS. DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS removes the requirement to first load the data into DB2 before loading the data onto the Accelerator, which can result in less CPU consumption.

Consistent Data Load and Historic Data Load

Users will still be able to use the Consistent Data Load and Historic Data Load features through the ISPF panels. Users will be able to use the last full image copy of an object on DB2 and apply log records up to the current time or to a consistent historical time for multiple objects. DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS loads the data without stopping update activity to production tables.

Loading from an image copy has been extended to allow loading from a regular full image copy (SHRLEVEL REFERENCE) that originated from a DB2 for z/OS system that is not connected to the Accelerator that is to be loaded. This can help users to consolidate data from different DB2 for z/OS systems into the Accelerator without expending additional resources to first unload the data, and to reuse existing recovery assets.

A solution from end to end

DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS provides an automated solution that can help users to quickly load data from DB2 and non-DB2 sources onto the DB2 Analytics Accelerator without interrupting access to production objects. This is accomplished while reducing the complexities of the extract and load process, and can help reduce CPU consumption and elapsed time.

The DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS can help users to load non-DB2 data in a more streamlined and efficient manner. In addition to DB2 for z/OS, it can help users to load data from non-DB2 and remote DB2 for z/OS sources into the Accelerator with less effort and time.

Charge metric

Program name Part number or PID number Charge metric
IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS 5639-OLE Per PVU

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip (socket). A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found on the PVU licensing for Distributed Software page. Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage® Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms found on the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules page. If using full capacity licensing, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores2 in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using virtualization capacity licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules that can be found on the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules page.

2
An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Notes:

  • Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
