Overview
Bottom rule

The products and systems that surround us and influence our lives are becoming smarter: more intelligent, instrumented, and interconnected. These products are increasingly complex as software delivers larger portions of the value of these innovative products and systems. Product development organizations are creating and managing larger, more complex, and more interrelated sets of engineering data. Old tools and processes for managing product development are strained by this complexity.

Additional and deeper dependencies across engineering domains create challenges for hardware and software co-design and other kinds of multi-disciplinary collaboration. Project development cycles lengthen. Staff costs increase. Too many defects escape notice until customer acceptance or field deployment. Opportunities for reuse may be missed.

At the same time, many organizations face pressure to get to market faster and drive cost out of the development process.

Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager V5 enhances the Rational solution for systems and software engineering by enabling you to visualize, analyze, and organize systems product engineering data coming from many tools. Engineering teams can get a better understanding of the relationships in that data, to help make more effective and timely engineering decisions.

Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager V5 uses Rational Jazz™ integration services to increase the visibility and value of engineering data.

It can help you do the following:

Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager indexes engineering data and makes the data available through custom role, product, process, and project views while honoring the security access settings on the data that it indexes.

Compared to alternative integration techniques, this federated, indexed approach has the potential to simplify deployment time and effort as well as reduce the run-time impact on engineering tools and the teams using them.

Description
Bottom rule

Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager is an integral capability of the Rational solution for systems and software engineering. It indexes product engineering data created and managed in the latest versions Rational DOORS®, Rational DOORS NG, Rational Rhapsody® Design Manager, Rational Quality Manager, and Rational Team Concert™. And when MathWorks Simulink artifacts are used with the Rational Rhapsody Design Manager, Simulink artifacts can participate in the index as well.

Engineering data created by home-grown tools and other vendors have the potential to be indexed. Light-weight connectors that are based on open specifications are needed for this purpose. IBM professional services or select IBM Business Partners can be employed to create these connectors.

A web-based system provides a portal into the indexed data, typically by using tailored views to display the latest information from the index. These views could provide role, task, product, process, or project perspectives.

In addition, a visual, impact analysis facility can help cross-disciplinary teams work together to understand the impact of proposed changes to the requirements or design.

A product definition capability allows users to organize lifecycle engineering data according to the products, systems, sub-systems, capabilities, and components that are being created.

Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager V5.0 offers increased data protection, scalability, and performance for all database intensive operations which, based on IBM DB2® technology, is designed to manage data more effectively and efficiently. In addition, the increased scalability and the ability to leverage the latest in server technology, helps deliver increased performance of backup and recovery processes.

Statement of direction
Bottom rule

IBM intends to demonstrate beta integrations between select Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems and Rational Team Concert, Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager, and Rational DOORS. Beta software of a Change Management integration between PTC Windchill PDMLink and Rational Team Concert will be demonstrated at the IBM Innovate 2014 conference the week of June 2, 2014.

IBM intends to develop other beta demonstrations in the future that build on the initial Change Management integration with PTC Windchill PDMLink using Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager to make Change Management data residing in PDMLink and Rational Team Concert available for queries and views drawing from both resources.

IBM also intends to explore how Rational DOORS can integrate with PTC Windchill PDMLink to provide a unified solution for product Requirements Management. IBM also intends to build on Requirements Management integrations using Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager to make requirements data residing in the PLM tools and Rational DOORS available for queries and views drawing from both resources.

IBM intends to develop beta demonstrations of similar integrations between Rational Team Concert and Rational Engineering Lifecycle Manager to the Dassault ENOVIA PLM solution.

IBM intends to explore integrations between these Rational products and Product Lifecycle Management systems that expose product definition structure with components, version identity, options, variants, and component views with contributing artifacts.

The general intent of these beta integrations is to demonstrate an open environment where engineers have access to all relevant information needed, regardless of source.

Statement of good security practices

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered destroyed or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
