IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection (CDP) for Files V6.3 is a real-time, continuous data protection offering, which means it can either back up your most important files the moment they are saved (real time) or perform the file backup on a more traditional schedule. Tivoli CDP for Files V6.3 can create multiple versions of your files on the local system for quick recoveries when no network connection is available and also send an additional copy of the protected data to a remote storage device for disaster recovery purposes.

Tivoli CDP for Files V6.3 offers centralized management capabilities for Microsoft™ Windows™ servers, laptops, and desktops. It is designed to deliver continuous protection of critical files for Windows servers, laptops, and desktops that are intermittently connected to a network, with minimal user intervention.

New in V6.3:

Tivoli CDP for Files V6.3 can be licensed to run on a server. It includes central administration options that allow a user to centrally control and manage data protection operations. It is licensed per server.

Tivoli CDP for Files Starter Edition V6.3 is intended to offer continuous data protection to the single user laptop or PC. It provides similar function to Tivoli CDP for Files V6.3, but does not include central administration options. It is licensed per client device.

Description
Bottom rule

IBM Tivoli Continuous Data Protection (CDP) for Files V6.3 can back up your most important files the moment they are saved (real time) instead of waiting for a scheduled interval. Non-critical files can be backed up on a traditional interval.

Tivoli CDP for Files V6.3 can back up your files to the local disk of your computer and also send an additional copy of the data to a remote storage device for disaster recovery purposes. The backup copies are versioned and can be restored by date. The local storage area is available to help create backup copies and you can restore data even when your computer is not connected to a network. You can restore your data from the remote backup copies in the event that your computer is lost or damaged.

The following remote storage devices are supported by Tivoli CDP for Files V6.3:

Centralized management

Key to providing a unified data protection infrastructure is the ability to centrally control and manage data protection operations. Tivoli CDP for Files V6.3 provides a centralized management interface that can help administrators manage thousands of laptops and desktops. This central management interface runs in the same integrated solutions console in which the Tivoli CDP for Files Administration Center runs, enabling the management of data protection policies across the data center, remote office, and mobile users in a centralized way. This centralized management capability allows various operations such as:

New in V6.3:

Tivoli CDP for Files Starter Edition

Tivoli CDP for Files Starter Edition V6.3, offered for the single client device user, provides similar function to Tivoli CDP for Files V6.3, but does not include the central administrator feature.

Licensing metric definitions and pricing examples
Bottom rule

Licensing metric definitions

Client Device

Client Device is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A Client Device is a single user computing device or special purpose sensor or telemetry device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from or provides data to another computer system that is typically referred to as a server or is otherwise managed by the server. Multiple Client Devices may share access to a common server. A Client Device may have some processing capability or be programmable to allow a user to do work. Examples include, but are not limited to actuators, appliances, automated teller machines, automatic meter readers, cash registers, disk drives, desktop computers, kiosks, notebook computers, personal digital assistant, point-of-sale terminals, sensors, smart meters, tape drives, and technical workstations. Licensee must obtain entitlements for every Client Device which runs, provides data to, uses services provided by, or otherwise accesses the program and for every other computer or server on which the program is installed.

Server

Server is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities and that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or client devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example, a blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered itself a separate server. Licensee must obtain entitlements for each server that is made available to the program, regardless of the number of processor cores and/or partitions in the Server or the number of copies of the program on the Server. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain entitlements for the program sufficient to cover the servers managed by the program.

Pricing examples

Tivoli CDP for Files V6.3 is intended to offer continuous data protection for a server. It is licensed per server.

Tivoli CDP for Files Starter Edition V6.3 is intended to offer continuous data protection to the single user laptop or PC. It is licensed per client device.

The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers a no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
