Transactional Database Pattern supersedes Workload Pattern for DB2® Workgroup Server Edition. It delivers the transactional database service component for the Workload Deployer workload pattern portfolio. Workload patterns are stacks of IBM software tailored for a particular purpose designed to help reduce the total cost of ownership for many categories of applications. The Transactional Database Pattern offering provides a set of capabilities that are essential to the provisioning and management of transactional database infrastructure for datacentric applications in a secure, private cloud.

Transactional Database Pattern V1.1 broadens data workload services of its predecessor with Data Mart Pattern by delivering best practices for provisioning data marts and providing a affordable solutions to offer data marts environments on the cloud. Both Transactional Database Pattern and Data Mart Pattern now support deployment options for AIX® as well as Linux™ environments.

Optimized for the Workload Deployer appliance, Transactional Database Pattern and Data Mart Pattern deliver deployment solutions for provisioning databases and data marts respectively in the private cloud. The solutions can help Information Technology (IT) reduce operational complexity by enabling self-service features that empower the application group to provision transactional database and data marts for their applications and reporting needs. These two products can help IT to cost effectively deploy and manage database infrastructure by:

  • Enabling self-service for the application group within IT to provision transactional databases simply and securely
  • Reducing time required for administering transactional databases and data marts, so more resources can be devoted to developing new solutions and innovation

What is new in Transactional Database Pattern

  • Database cloning
  • Automated virtual machine deployment sizing templates on both Linux and AIX
  • Automated database backup scheduling
  • Enhanced diagnostic tools and integration with IBM Data Studio
  • Affordable licensing for nonproduction environments

Data Mart Pattern shares all the characteristics and key features of Transactional Database Pattern and is tuned for the unique I/O throughput required of data mart workloads, including data compression capabilities and data movement tools. All designed to help you to move the business forward with the information needed without delay.

Description
Bottom rule

Transactional Database Pattern provides a set of capabilities that are essential to the provisioning and management of transactional database infrastructure for datacentric applications in a secure, private cloud. Through the simplified interface on the Workload Deployer appliance, the Operations Groups within IT can prescribe new Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) database deployments. The interface enables the efficient interchange of database demand and provisioning between users of Operations and Application groups within a private cloud.

Through automation of provisioning database infrastructure, IT can address the demand for new applications for the business rather than being consumed with repetitive tasks of typical database provisioning.

Data Mart Pattern is similar to the Transactional Database Pattern, but deploys data marts including configuring the unique memory and disk requirements for this type of workload. Data Mart Pattern includes data compression for improved performance in a shared disk environment typical to cloud data mart deployment.

The Data Mart Pattern that shares the simplified interface on the Workload Deployer appliance, IT can easily prescribe new data mart deployments. Again, IT can accommodate the demand for the business analysis rather than being consumed with repetitive tasks of typical data mart provisioning.

Once the Operations Group configures the transactional database or data mart workload in Workload Deployer, the Transactional Database Pattern and Data Mart Pattern are designed to allow the Application Group to confidently deploy a database to support these departmental OLTP applications or a data mart to support new business analysis within a few mouse clicks.

New in Version 1.1 is the ability to provision nonproduction transactional database and data mart environments. These deployments are seamlessly set up and configured on your hardware registered with Workload Deployer. These deployments are tracked from within Workload Deployer for the Operations Group.

Upon deployment, the database administrator (DBA) within Operations Group has peace of mind that the database or data mart is being deployed in a trusted fashion designed to perform well in the private virtual environment. Based on years of experience with client deployments, different methods are applied for transactional database and data mart requirements for the memory, disk, operating system configurations which are applied according to the workload.

The deployment best practices are also designed to secure the user access control for the transactional database, data mart and the operating system. The user is quickly presented the connection parameters once the database is launched and is available.

Transactional Database Pattern uses a simple approach enabling the operation group to support the majority of transactional database deployments within an enterprise. While this simplified approach precludes highly customized database requirements, it helps IT to deliver more value to the business with fewer resources without sacrificing quality and consistency for database deployments. Furthermore deployments using this practice help reduce time to value through with increased efficiencies between applications and operations groups.

Also, new in Version 1.1, Transactional Database Pattern and Data Mart Pattern now support database cloning enabling IT to clone database deployments. IT now can capture changes to the database and data mart deployment through cloning which is common with an iterative development environment. Also new in Transactional Database Pattern and Data Mart Pattern now provides a means to automate database backups as well as provide scheduling options for database backups to Tivoli® Storage Manager facilities.

Transactional Database Pattern and Data Mart Pattern improve on the deployment sizing enabling IT to increase the usage of the cloud environment. Also, new in Version 1.1, IBM AIX-based PowerVM™ are now supported for your private cloud in conjunction with existing Linux-based environments.

Workload Deployer V3.1

Workload Deployer manages Data Mart Pattern and Transactional Database Pattern with the same infrastructure support as offered for "topology patterns" built on Hypervisor Edition images. Specifically, Workload Deployer offers license management capability, including the ability to set thresholds designed to prevent individual users from putting a department over their license entitlement position.

Transactional Database Pattern supersedes Workload Pattern for DB2 Workgroup Server Edition. For details, refer to Software Announcement 211-254, dated June 7, 2011.

For more information on Workload Deployer, refer to Hardware Announcement 111-202, dated October 4, 2011.
