Overview
Bottom rule

Enhancements to remote mirroring with the Storwize V7000 V6.3.0 are designed to provide new options to help administrators balance network bandwidth requirements and recovery point objectives for applications, helping to reduce operating costs for disaster recovery solutions. Storwize V7000 now supports higher recovery point objective (RPO) times by providing the option to use a lower-bandwidth link between mirrored sites. It uses space-efficient FlashCopy targets as sources in remote copy relationships to increase the time allowed to complete a remote copy data cycle. With the ability to remote mirror from one system to the other, customers now have greater flexibility in their expanding environments using both Storwize V7000 and SAN Volume Controller in remote mirror relationships. Remote deployments for disaster recovery for current SAN Volume Controller environments can easily be fitted with the Storwize V7000 or vice versa.

System performance improvements are available with improved management of the I/O paths to externally attached storage systems. This rotational method allows more flexibility for data paths and provides greater performance reliability. The Storwize V7000 easily integrates with existing user authentication methods in the customer's data center with native LDAP support for easier management. Storwize V7000 interoperability now supports additional storage products including IBM XIV® Gen3, HP 3PAR, and Violin Flash Memory Array, and supports additional models for Bull StoreWay, Fujitsu ETERNUS, and Texas Memory Systems RamSan. Interoperability is also available for VMware vSphere 5 and RedHat Enterprise Linux™ 6.

The IBM Tivoli® Storage Productivity Center Select family is designed to license by the number of storage devices managed, and support IBM Storwize V7000, XIV, DS3000, DS4000®, DS5000 as stand-alone devices or when attached to an IBM SVC. The Select family also supports storage devices that are attached to Storwize V7000. The V4.2.2 suite of distributed products is designed to deliver improved time-to-value with storage tiering reporting in Tivoli Common Reporting/Cognos in a virtualized storage environment, and support for the Storwize V7000 Unified system. IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for Disk Midrange Edition in V4.2.2 is renamed to IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for Disk Select as another offering in the Select family.

Description
Bottom rule

IBM Storwize V7000 V6.3 highlights include support for round-robin data path selection for attached storage, native LDAP support, lower bandwidth global mirroring, and mirroring between IBM System Storage® SVC and Storwize V7000. The following functions, features, and support options help increase the benefits of the Storwize V7000.

Round-robin data paths to attached storage

System performance improvements are available with improved management of the I/O paths to external storage systems attached to the Storwize V7000. This round-robin method allows more flexibility for data paths and provides greater performance, especially in the event that a data path goes down.

Native LDAP support

Customers using Microsoft™ Active Directory especially can integrate their LDAP to manage the Storwize V7000 as part of Version 6.3.0. Existing authentication methods will not be removed. This access provides better security and ease of use in customer environments.

Lower bandwidth global mirror

Customers who wish to use the global mirror capability with Storwize V7000 can now do so on a lower bandwidth link between sites. This provides new options to help administrators balance network bandwidth requirements and RPO times for applications, helping to reduce operation costs for disaster recovery solutions. Remote mirroring with the SVC supports higher RPO times by allowing the data at the disaster recovery site to get further out of sync with the production site if the communication link limits replication, and then approaches synchronicity again when the link is not as busy. This lower bandwidth remote mirroring uses space-efficient FlashCopy targets as sources in remote copy relationships to increase the time allowed to complete a remote copy data cycle.

Remote mirroring between SVC and Storwize V7000

Customers have greater flexibility in their expanding environments using both Storwize V7000 and SVC with the ability now to remote mirror from one system to the other. With the wide variety of storage systems that can be managed under both the SAN Volume Controller and Storwize V7000, the options available for replicating data between a number of storage systems is multiplied. Remote deployments for disaster recovery for current SVC environments can easily be fitted with the Storwize V7000 or vice versa.

This new function does not affect how Metro/Global Mirror on the SVC or Remote Mirroring on the Storwize V7000 is licensed. You must still license usage for volumes replicated at the source and the target. Because of a difference in metrics, SVC mirroring can be licensed for a subset of the total storage virtualized, but Storwize V7000 mirroring is licensed for the entire storage system.

Added interoperability

Storwize V7000 now supports many more heterogeneous data center environments with the addition of interoperability support for:

  • RedHat Enterprise Linux 6
  • VMware vSphere 5
  • IBM XIV Gen3
  • Bull StoreWay models 1500, 2000, 3000
  • Fujitsu ETERNUS models DX80 S2, DX90 S2, DX410 S2, and DX440 S2
  • HP 3PAR models F200, F400, T400, and T800
  • Texas Memory Systems RamSan-440
  • Violin Flash Memory Array models 3140 and 3200

Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Select V4.2.2

IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center V4.2.2 now has two offerings that are licensed per storage devices:

  • IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Select - This offering has the same capabilities found in IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Standard Edition. It helps manage the end-to-end storage environment with the advanced storage optimization, SAN configuration planning, Configuration analysis and fabric performance management capabilities.
  • IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for Disk Select - This offering is renamed from IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for Disk Midrange Edition and has the same capabilities found in IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for Disk. It helps monitor and report on performance of selected devices.

IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center is a feature-rich storage management software suite, and the integrated suite provides detailed monitoring, reporting, and management within a single console. The V4.2.2 suite of distributed products delivers improved time-to-value with storage tiering reporting in Tivoli Common Reporting/Cognos in a virtualized storage environment. V4.2.2 also adds support for the File Module Software in the Storwize V7000 Unified solution. This includes the discovery, virtualization, and health monitoring of the file aspects of Storwize V7000 unified solution, capacity usage reporting, file system reporting, and file and block storage mapping. It helps monitor, report, and manage both file module and block module in the Storwize V7000 unified solution within a single console.

IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Select family is designed to license by the number of storage devices managed, and support IBM Storwize V7000, XIV, DS3000, DS4000, DS5000 as stand-alone devices or when attached to an IBM SVC. The Select family also supports any storage devices that are attached to Storwize V7000.
