Overview
Bottom rule

IBM Web Application Pattern V2.0, previously announced as IBM Workload Deployer Pattern for Web Applications V1.0 in Software Announcement 211-140, dated April 05, 2011, expands support for Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) web applications with Java EE 6 compliance and provides broad programming model support, including Java EE 6, Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi) applications, and Java Persistence API (JPA). This new support can promote business agility and provide choices to help you decrease cost, enhance your developer productivity, and grow your business.

You can use Web Application Pattern to deploy and manage web applications in a more cost-effective way while helping to maximize developer productivity. This can provide significant value for your data center or business by enabling you to spend less time administering your web applications and more time developing new solutions.

Each virtual application pattern, previously announced as workload patterns in Software Announcement 211-140, dated April 05, 2011, requires one of the IBM System Images, such as IBM Workload Deployer Image for x86 Systems V1.0, previously announced in Software Announcement 211-140, dated April 05, 2011, and IBM OS Image for AIX® Systems V1.0. These system images provide the foundation for virtual application patterns. Specifically, they provide the operating environment in which virtual application patterns run, including the operating system and infrastructure unique to IBM Workload Deployer. With IBM Workload Deployer V3.1, AIX operating system support for virtual applications is now provided using OS Image for AIX Systems.

IBM system images are required for a set of shared services that are deployed by IBM Workload Deployer in support of all virtual application patterns. These shared services include components, such as web proxy and load balancing.

IBM Web Application Pattern can provide significant value for your data center or business by helping you to:

  • Reduce the deployment and configuration time for your web application environment
  • Reduce risk by representing your infrastructure in code form (codifying) and preserving best practices for repeated, consistent deployments
  • Spend less time administering your web applications and more time developing new solutions

Description

IBM Web Application Pattern V2.0

IBM Web Application Pattern V2.0 broadens the support for programming models such as Java EE 6, OSGi, and JPA. Support for these programming models in IBM Web Application Pattern V2.0 enables reuse and rapid creation of applications and services that promote business agility.

Web Application Pattern can provide a way to deploy and manage web applications in a more cost-effective way, helping to enhance developer productivity. This cost-effectiveness is obtained in part through the removal of choice. While Web Application Pattern supports applications of all sizes and levels of importance, the removal of choice will preclude very customized applications from being able to run. The question of compatibility will normally come down to whether all of an application's required middleware componentry is included in Web Application Pattern. For example, Web Application Pattern only supports local Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs). It is typically the case that simpler web applications will fit this solution.

Web Application Pattern includes a dynamically scalable application server, which can grow to meet the resource needs of the applications hosted within it, based on processor consumption. Interaction with Web Application Pattern occurs through artifacts and policies. You simply provide artifacts such as .ear files and .ddl files and specify deployment and management policies, and you are ready to use your application. The deployable artifact describes the operational policy by which the application server should be managed.

Web Application Pattern allows connections to an existing database. Use of that external database component is as simple as providing connection information about the database. Additionally, it provides connectivity to an external directory server, messaging server, and legacy systems such as CICS® and IMS™.

In addition to the ability to dynamically scale the application server footprint in response to fluctuating processor consumption metrics, Web Application Pattern provides scalability by utilizing an elastic caching component. This caching component is a distributed in-memory cache, which is highly scalable and fast. Further, it can optimize the resource usage by deploying a scalable proxy component as a service. This shared instance of proxy servers can balance the incoming workload traffic and route requests appropriately to respective application servers. The instances for proxy as well as caching component can be scaled up or down based on the requirement. Overall, Web Application Pattern provides an end-to-end deployment and management solution for web applications. This solution can provide a more cost-effective way of managing web applications due to reduced manual labor and increased consistency.

IBM Workload Deployer Image for x86 Systems V1.0 and IBM OS Image for AIX Systems V1.0

IBM Workload Deployer Image for x86 Systems V1.0 or IBM OS Image for AIX Systems V1.0 provide the foundation for virtual application patterns, including the Web Application Pattern. They provide the operating environment in which workload patterns run, including the operating system and infrastructure unique to IBM Workload Deployer. Deployer Image for x86 Systems or OS Image for AIX Systems are required components for use of Web Application Pattern.

IBM Workload Deployer Image for x86 Systems V1.0 or IBM OS Image for AIX Systems V1.0 is also required for shared services components deployed by Workload Deployer. These services are shared across all virtual application patterns and are responsible for managing load balancing and other cross-cutting concerns.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores1 in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_specific_virtualization_technologies.html
1
An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Notes:

  • Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.

Processor Value Unit (PVU) sub-capacity licensing

This software product is eligible for sub-capacity licensing. Customers must accept the terms of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (Attachment), and must obtain PVU Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) for the maximum processor core capacity available to an eligible sub-capacity product when deployed in an eligible virtualization environment. This is also referred to as sub-capacity or virtualization capacity licensing.

Customers must use the IBM License Metric Tool unless they meet the exceptions described in the Attachment.

For information regarding PVU sub-capacity licensing, including terms and IBM License Metric Tool ordering information, visit
