TWS LoadLeveler V5.1 is a job management tool that is designed to allow users to run more jobs in less time by matching the jobs' processing needs with the available resources. TWS LoadLeveler for AIX schedules jobs and provides functions for building, submitting, and processing jobs quickly and efficiently in a dynamic environment.
Batch jobs can be submitted, either serial or parallel, to run in the background and require no input from the user. LoadLeveler scheduling algorithms use the availability of consumable resources to determine the machine or machines on which a job will run.
Specific to LoadLeveler V5
Large scale cluster options are delivered to make commands more usable in large clusters and are designed to improve scheduling and job launch performance.
Additional commands are provided to improve serviceability, logging, and analysis:
- Debugging commands provide consolidated information for tracing, and options for determining locking problems.
- LoadLeveler information can be consolidated with end-to-end system management for event analysis using an open source offering from IBM called Toolkit for Event Analysis and Logging.
- The default size of logs is increased and timestamps now include microseconds.
Advance reservation is enhanced to include a new reservation type and keyword for flexible resources and user options, and reservations can now specify floating consumable resources.
Support for HFI switch adapters allows users to request collective groups and send buffers for User Space parallel jobs running on HFI nodes. Administrators can configure LoadLeveler classes using new keywords.
Continued functional benefits
TWS LoadLeveler supports a rich set of configuration keywords. For sites using xCAT and LoadLeveler, LoadLeveler's configuration data can be stored in the same IBM DB2® database that xCAT configures. An option is provided to check the validity of configuration data in files or databases.
Among keyword and command enhancements is the capability for configuring groups of machines with common characteristics. After the configuration data specified by the administrator is read from the configuration files or database, it is stored in shared memory for quick access by LoadLeveler daemons and processes.
TWS LoadLeveler is packaged with separate install images for the resource manager and job scheduler. Each software package has its own set of externals such as commands and APIs. A user can have the option of installing just the LoadLeveler resource manager, which is also packaged with the Parallel Environment product, or installing both the LoadLeveler resource manager and scheduler, functions, as available in the LoadLeveler product today.
A well-defined API is created and made available in the LoadLeveler resource manager, to allow a robust and efficient interaction with any scheduler.
In making use of this API, a customer's scheduling software could provide scheduling functions in a similar way as the LoadLeveler scheduler does, while taking advantage of the specific features provided in the LoadLeveler resource manager.
Accessibility by people with disabilities

Specified operating environment
IBM Power 775 clusters using the Host Fabric Interface (HFI) or Power 730 or Power 740 clusters running stand-alone or connected with a LAN supporting IP running AIX V7.1.
Operating environment: AIX V7.1 with Service Pack 3, or later
To run parallel operating environment jobs, IBM Parallel Environment Runtime Edition for AIX, V1.1 is required.
If using the database configuration option, Extreme Cloud Administrative Toolkit (xCAT) V2.6 using DB2 Workgroup Server Edition for High Performance Computing V1.1 is required.
The program's specifications and specified operating environment information may be found in documentation accompanying the program, if available, such as a README file, or other information published by IBM, such as an announcement letter. Documentation and other program content may be supplied only in the English language.
IBM Parallel Environment Runtime Edition for AIX provides a high-function, parallel, application development environment that can reduce the time and effort required to develop parallel applications. These parallel applications could then be run with LoadLeveler.
Extreme Cloud Administrative Toolkit (xCAT) V2, an open source scalable distributed computing management and provisioning tool available from SourceForge, offers a unified interface for deploying and managing large systems. LoadLeveler shares the DB2 database configured by xCAT to store configuration data.
IBM provides limited support services for xCAT. For details, refer to Software Announcement 211-107, dated July 12, 2011.
TWS LoadLeveler can be configured to use a shared file system like IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS). By placing all the home and local directories under one shared file system, customers are able to access all the configuration files and directories necessary to recover and restart a failed TWS LoadLeveler server anywhere in the cluster. GPFS APAR #IV00760 is required in support of the Power 775 cluster solution.
IBM DB2 Workgroup Server Edition 9.7 for High Performance Computing can provide the database used by xCAT to store configuration data when running in a high performance computing cluster. This offering is specific to the IBM Power 775 Supercomputer cluster.
TWS LoadLeveler V5.1 cannot coexist in a mixed environment with previous versions. In order to migrate from a previous version, LoadLeveler must be rendered quiescent.
The checkpoint restart function is not available with TWS LoadLeveler V5.1.
The following functions, keywords, or commands are not provided in V5:
- The ll_preempt subroutine is removed and is replaced by the ll_preempt_jobs subroutine.
- The alias machine stanza statement is deprecated. The function provided by this statement, to configure a machine stanza name when the stanza name does not match the machine's hostname, is automated, making the alias statement unnecessary.
- MVAPICH information is removed.
- Scale-across information is removed.
TWS LoadLeveler is distributed as a single package available via DVD media or electronic download with the following:
- IBM International Program License Agreement in multilanguage booklet (LC23-5107-00) and its License Information (L-RHAN-8DGQ27) in multiple languages (ll.loc.license)
- Proof of Entitlement (PoE)
- Product README file that describes the program's specified operating environment and program specifications
- Program installp images:
- LoadLeveler images (LoadL.resmgr, LoadL.scheduler)
