To reduce shipping costs and improve service levels, companies must thoroughly analyze their transportation network strategies and compare multiple what-if scenarios. Existing transportation solutions focus on operational constraints and are typically too complex for strategic applications, while spreadsheet analysis is too limited to find the most economical solutions.
Companies that regularly transport materials or goods, such as retailers, shippers and manufacturers have several key questions they need to answer:
- What are the best routes?
- What are the opportunities for combining shipments and finding continuous moves?
- Which shipments should use private fleet, commercial truckload, or less than truckload?
- What size should the fleet be?
- What is the impact of back-hauls?
- How can running inbound and outbound transportation together save additional money?
- How does a new network strategy impact the routes, multi-stops, and transportation operations?
- How do we take advantage of hubs?
IBM ILOG Transportation Analyst answers these questions by providing the ability to quickly analyze different strategies and find the best plan to deliver products and utilize transportation assets. IBM ILOG Transportation Analyst assigns shipments to vehicles and sequences pickups and deliveries with the objective of minimizing costs while adhering to business and regulatory constraints. In short, companies deliver more reliably and accurately for less with IBM ILOG Transportation Analyst.
IBM Transportation Analyst helps companies address many key business objectives, including:
- Utilizing transportation assets efficiently and determining the most efficient use of private fleet to deliver shipments
- Determining the correct transportation mode and assigning shipments to private fleet, commercial truckload, or less than truckload to minimize total cost
- Examining the cost and benefits of business rules
- Performing what-if scenarios to test different rules for pickup and delivery windows, delivery frequency, and vehicle rules
- Analyzing impact of new network design to determine the impact on fleet size and multi-stop routes for new network structure
- Exploring opportunities for maximizing backhauls and use returning vehicles to transport goods

IBM ILOG LogicNet Plus and IBM Sterling Transportation Management System can be used to supplement this product.
Using IBM ILOG LogicNet Plus in conjunction with IBM ILOG Transportation Analyst allows firms to design the optimal distribution network with the right number, size, and location of warehouses and distribution facilities and understand how changes in strategic transportation plans impact overall supply chain performance including costs and service level trade-offs.
Using IBM Sterling Transportation Management System in conjunction with IBM ILOG Transportation Analyst enables transportation providers and shippers to make both long-term (strategic) and short-term (tactical) decisions while continuously improving operational efficiency, reducing costs, and ultimately enhancing the overall customer fulfillment experience.
ILOG Transportation Analyst can feed data back into IBM Sterling Transportation Management System, thereby helping shippers become more efficient in setting up parameters and policies to better execute orders. For instance, if a company's network changes, they may decide to go with an intermodal approach vs. full truckload, or source from another warehouse. Companies need a sandbox tool for what-if scenarios to answer questions such as:
- How many trucks should I buy if I am going to have a private fleet?
- Should I merge these two facilities together?
- Should I bother to go collect back haul data?
These what-if scenarios work their way back into the Transportation Management System, solving a much larger challenge or problem for transportation managers.

|IBM Electronic Services|
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
