Description

IBM Tivoli NetView for z/OS V6.1 capabilities

System automation

Tivoli NetView allows MVS™ messages to come to NetView for automation and browsing without having to make difficult configuration choices. A shared data space is established to capture all z/OS, NetView, and job messages into a consolidated log for automation. In addition, all message attributes are exposed and available for automation. You can create your own attributes that can be passed on for further automation or for viewing by operators.

Consolidated and archived message log and enhanced browsing

With Tivoli NetView V6.1, logging and browsing functions are greatly enhanced to provide consolidated access to all NetView, system, and job messages. A new consolidated log (Canzlog) browse capability includes expanded access to message attributes on individual messages, which provides improved visibility to system activities. Robust filtering is easily applied to retrieve desired log records based on a large selection of factors including time range, jobname, JobID, message ID, address space type, domain, authorization identities and groups, automation token, user settable attributes, or combinations of these values.

Using the Canzlog function, you can significantly reduce problem determination time by filtering messages from various logs around a certain timeframe, or by filtering messages from a specific domain or job, providing improved availability and overall control. The Canzlog data can be automatically archived and the archived data is seamlessly available to the browser as well as a powerful REXX™ pipe programming interface to allow increased management and reporting of system activities.

Enhanced IP management

Tivoli NetView's long history of providing management for the mainframe environment (including the operating system and its communications server) continues with several important enhancements to better manage IP networks.

Packet trace: The NetView IP packet trace function has been enhanced to analyze the data in a packet trace to identify potential network and system problems. This enhancement significantly reduces the time needed for problem identification and diagnosis. From within the packet trace session analysis, individual connections can be dropped and the packet trace data can be saved for later retrieval or further analysis.

The new PKTTRACE command can be used via the command line, timer, or automated to start and stop traces and select trace criteria. The PKTTRACE command simplifies tracing by automatically starting any required trace components.

IP Subnet and z/OS: The MultiSystem Manager component of NetView has a long history of providing management of distributed resources from the z/OS platform. With Tivoli NetView V6.1, this management is enhanced further as an updated MultiSystem Manager agent is now more tightly integrated with IBM Tivoli OMNibus and Tivoli NetWork Manager, which can provide improved visibility to your distributed environment from z/OS. This integration allows for better view, creation, and display of network relationships.

The MultiSystem Manager agent for IBM Tivoli OMNibus and IBM Tivoli Network Manager in NetView gathers views and relationships and loads them into the NetView for z/OS Resource Object Data Manager (RODM) data cache. These resources can then be viewed and managed from the NetView Management Console (NMC) to provide improved distributed management.

Enterprise integration

Discovery Library Adapter (DLA): The DLA function has been enhanced to better utilize z/OS data in the RODM data cache. The DLA can now gather sysplex, z/OS system, and distributed resource information stored in RODM and collected by NetView's discovery manager function or MultiSystem Manager agent for IBM Tivoli Network Manager. Using the DLA provides monitoring and visibility to your system for improved distributed and z/OS utilization.

Support for zEnterprise: The discovery manager of NetView has been enhanced to now provide information on the zEnterprise platform. This includes the new interface and OSA Channel types specific to the zEnterprise platform. This new data is available for display through the NetView Management Console, Tivoli Enterprise Console® workspaces, or 3270 commands. Moving to the zEnterprise provides new hybrid capabilities supported by Tivoli NetView V6.1.

Dynamic Virtual IP Address (DVIPA) support for hot-standby: DVIPA monitoring has been updated to include support for the new IBM Communications Server hot-standby distribution method for DVIPA. This provides enhanced system availability across your network.

Support for GDPS Active/Active Continuous Availability solution: NetView plays a key role in the GDPS Active/Active Continuous Availability solution. This solution significantly increases system and workload resiliency while also reducing the time to recovery in disaster situations. The NetView program provides monitoring capability for workload status and other managed elements in the solution and automation in response to designated conditions.

Application development enhancements

IBM Enterprise PL/I for z/OS support: Tivoli NetView V6.1 supports the latest release of Enterprise PL/I for z/OS, V3.9. Using Enterprise PL/I for z/OS V3.9, you can now extend the capabilities of NetView by writing your own command processors or user exits.

Installation enhancements

  • NetView now supports a default logon profile, enabling operators defined in a System Authorization Facility (SAF) product to not be defined in the NetView operator definition member (DSIOPF). It also allows operators to be defined in DSIOPF without logon profiles.
  • Starting with z/OS V1.12, you no longer have to add NetView modules into the SCHEDxx member of the SYS1.PARMLIB dataset. This reduces the time required for installation.
  • Updated Report Generator for CNMSTYLE: This tool provides a report of the NetView stylesheet (CNMSTYLE) and its included members. It allows you to quickly and easily see which towers and subtowers have been activated, and which parameter values are actually in effect. This helps to prevent unwanted recycles of NetView due to parameter values that are syntactically correct and semantically valid, but not the desired values.

Serviceability updates

The GLOBALV command is enhanced to enable you to automate or trace changes in global variable values. Changes in global variable values are subject to automation through a message that contains the variable name and its new value. Automation table entries can be coded to process this message. Tracing a global variable results in a message that is written to the netlog, containing the variable's name, its value, and information about what program changed it.

Usability updates

The NetView management console user interface is updated to improve usability and provide consistency with other products across the Tivoli portfolio. The NetView Tivoli Enterprise Management Agent and associated workspaces have added support for new data types and support of 64-bit data.

Customization options

Select the appropriate feature numbers to customize your order to specify the delivery options desired. These features can be specified on the initial or MES orders.

Expedite shipments will be processed to receive 72-hour delivery from the time IBM Software Delivery and Fulfillment (SDF) receives the order. SDF will then ship the order via overnight air transportation.

Customized offerings

Product deliverables are shipped only via CBPDO, ServerPac, SystemPac®.

CBPDO and ServerPac are offered for Internet delivery in countries where ShopzSeries product ordering is available. Internet delivery reduces software delivery time and allows you to install software without the need to handle tapes or DVDs. For more details on Internet delivery, refer to the ShopzSeries help information at

http://www.software.ibm.com/ShopzSeries

You choose the delivery method when you order the software. IBM recommends Internet delivery. In addition to Internet and DVD, the supported tape delivery options for CBPDO, ServerPac, SystemPac include:

  • 3590
  • 3592

Most products can be ordered in ServerPac and SystemPac the month following their availability on CBPDO. z/OS can be ordered via all three offerings at general availability. Production of software product orders will begin on the planned general availability date.

  • CBPDO shipments will begin one week after general availability.
  • ServerPac shipments will begin two weeks after general availability.
  • SystemPac shipments will begin four weeks after general availability due to additional customization, and data input verification.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
