IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) V6.2.0 is designed to provide improved tracking by introducing real-time performance monitoring. Immediate performance information can be received, including CPU utilization and I/O rates, to monitor environmental changes and troubleshoot, and when pairing up the information with historical detailed data from Tivoli® Storage Productivity Center, can be better positioned to develop the best performance solutions.
VMware virtual environments can be improved with SVC by using the vStorage API for Array Integration (VAAI). This new API delegates certain VMware functions to SVC to enhance performance. In the vSphere 4.1 release, this offload capability to SVC supports full copy, block zeroing, and hardware-assisted locking. The introduction of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) hardware for the SAN Volume Controller allows customers to continue to focus on cost efficiency with higher network performance by offering 10 Gigabit iSCSI host attachment. SVC is scalable to manage up to 32 PB of storage by allowing managed disks to be as large as 256 TB on select storage systems.
IBM System Storage Easy Tier is designed to automate data placement throughout the SVC managed disk group onto two tiers of storage to intelligently align the system with current workload requirements, and is now available for use with solid-state devices installed on the SVC 2145 models CF8 and CG8.
SVC interoperability now supports additional storage products, including HP StorageWorks P9500 Disk Array, Hitachi Data Systems Virtual Storage Platform, Texas Memory Systems RamSan-620, and EMC VNX models.

- June 30, 2011: Availability of the Plug-In for VMware vCenter
Back to top
IBM System Storage SVC V6.2 highlights include support for real-time performance monitoring, VMware VAAI, and 10 Gigabit iSCSI connectivity. The following functions, features, and support options help maximize the benefits of the SAN Volume Controller.
Real-time performance monitoring
IBM System SVC V6.2.0 provides improved tracking by introducing real-time performance monitoring. Real-time performance monitoring gathers the following system level performance statistics:
- CPU utilization
- Port utilization and I/O rates
- Volume and MDisk I/O rates
Real-time performance monitoring can immediately track environmental changes and for performance troubleshooting. The sampling rate can be set as low as five seconds. Historical data is kept for about five minutes, therefore Tivoli Storage Productivity Center can capture more detailed performance information and to analyze trends in order to get a complete picture when developing the best performance solutions.
VMware vStorage API for Array Integration (VAAI)
VMware virtual environments can be improved with SVC by using VAAI. This new API delegates certain VMware functions to SVC for performance enhancement. In the vSphere 4.1 release, this offload capability to SVC supports:
- Full copy: Enables the SVC to make full copies of data without requiring the ESX server to read and write the data
- Block zeroing: Enables SVC to zero out large numbers of blocks, shortening the time needed to provision virtual machines
- Hardware-assisted locking: Improves the scalability of large ESX server farms sharing volumes on the SVC by providing an alternate means to protect the metadata for VMFS cluster-file systems
Plug-In for VMware vCenter
The SVC Plug-In for VMware vCenter allows VMware administrators to monitor and manage SVC volumes from the VMware software. This plug-in enables a common set of SVC tasks to be performed from VMware vCenter without needing to switch between user interfaces. This plug-in will initially be certified for use with SVC V6.1.
10 Gigabit iSCSI
The new 10 Gigabit Ethernet hardware for the SVC enables 10 Gigabit iSCSI host attachment.
256 TB managed disks and 32 PB managed storage
SVC now allows virtualization of managed disks up to 256 TB in capacity for select storage systems, improved from 2 TB. With the use of 8 GB extent sizes, one SVC cluster can now manage up to 32 PB of storage, up from the 8 PB maximum. For a list of the storage systems supporting managed disks up to 256 TB, visit
Easy Tier with SVC internal solid-state devices
IBM System Storage Easy Tier is now available for use with solid-state devices installed on SVC 2145 models CF8 and CG8. Easy Tier is already available for other solid-state devices managed by SVC as part of Version 6.1. Easy Tier is designed to automate data placement throughout the SVC managed disk group onto two tiers of storage to intelligently align the system with current workload requirements.
Licensing change: Removal of physical site boundary
Prior to this release, SVC standard software (V3, V4, V5, and V6.1) customers were licensed to use this program only to manage storage capacity within a single physical site, and only for the amount of storage capacity within that physical site for which they had received proper authorization from IBM. This held true for all of the following SVC standard software licensed features: the base SVC software license, the FlashCopy® license, and the Metro/Global Mirror license. IBM SAN Volume Controller standard software and its associated features are now licensed to the customer (enterprise), no longer requiring customers to obtain a separate license to deploy SVC standard software at any additional physical sites within a country where SVC is deployed for that customer.
This change applies to new software transactions and new software maintenance renewals and reinstatements only. If customers already have SVC at multiple physical sites with separate licensing at each of those sites, they should contact their sales representative to adjust the licensing to a single customer identity within each applicable country as part of their next transaction. This change does not entitle customers to any refunds for software licensing. Executing this change may also require customers to transfer entitlement records currently in AAS into Passport Advantage.
There will be no conversion or exchange of terabyte values according to the capacity tiers they were originally purchased in. The following is an example:
A customer has 10 TB (all in Tier 1) at physical site A, and 10 TB (all in Tier 1) at physical site B. When these come up for renewal of software maintenance in Passport Advantage, the customer requests of their sales representative to help them move their entitlement into a single customer identity. The new single customer identity will have 20 TB (12 TB in Tier 1, and 8 TB in Tier 2) which will be renewed for software maintenance accordingly.
Note: A customer who has physical sites in multiple countries may consolidate their licenses only within each country. Check with your sales representative and review all necessary conditions prior to making any changes to your licensing.
FlashCopy now licensed on the main source volumes
SVC V6.2 changes the way the FlashCopy is licensed so that SVC now counts as the main source in FlashCopy relationships. Previously, if cascaded FlashCopy was set up, multiple source volumes would have to be licensed. For example, where A is the main source volume, a FlashCopy from A to B, B to C, and C to D, would require licensing FlashCopy on volumes A, B, and C. Starting with V6.2, SVC no longer counts multiple sources in a cascaded FlashCopy relationship. For example, where A is the main source volume, a FlashCopy from A to B, B to C, and C to D, requires a FlashCopy license only for volume A.
This change applies to all SVC software installations. This change may result in an over allocation of FlashCopy licensing for some customers. Those customers may choose to use this additional entitled capacity to provide FlashCopy on other volumes. This change does not entitle customers to any refunds for software licensing.
FlashCopy target as Remote Copy source
Using a FlashCopy target volume as the source volume in a remote copy relationship is now available in SVC V6.2. This complements the current capability for remote copy target volumes to be source volumes in a FlashCopy relationship, and allows administrators greater flexibility in setting up disaster recovery configurations.
SVC for XIV®
Refer to the Reference information section for the previous announcement letter for SVC for XIV (5639-SX1).
SVC now supports many more heterogeneous data center environments with the addition of interoperability support for:
- HP StorageWorks P9500 Disk Array
- Hitachi Data Systems Virtual Storage Platform
- Texas Memory Systems RamSan-620
- EMC VNX models
For all the specific models and host environments supported, visit
45-Day migration allowance
With the benefit of virtualization, SVC allows customers to bring new storage systems into their storage environment and very quickly and easily migrate data from their existing storage systems to the new storage systems. In order to facilitate this migration, IBM allows customers 45 days from the date of installation of the SVC to temporarily exceed their entitled virtualization license for the purpose of migrating data from one system to another. If the managed storage capacity of the destination system is greater than the source of the migration, the customer must purchase or have the appropriate capacity licenses entitled for the post-migration management. Any management of capacity thereafter, and ongoing virtualization of any managed storage systems under SVC, requires the purchase of the appropriate capacity licenses. Migrations performed at later points in time that are to completely replace storage systems managed under SVC, thereby requiring effectively twice the managed capacity to perform that replacement activity, are granted a 45-day period to complete such a migration effort without having to purchase a license. Customers must make their sales representative aware of their intent and when they will be starting this migration so that an end date can be tracked. It is the customer's responsibility to ensure that they are properly licensed for all managed capacity under SVC after those 45 days.
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act
IBM System Storage SVC Software V6.2.0 is capable, as of June 10, 2011, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. Specified operating environment
This program requires at least one pair of IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller 2145-CG8, 2145-CF8, 2145-8A4, 2145-8G4, 2145-8F4, or 2145-8F2 storage engines with dual uninterruptible power supplies, and a System Storage Productivity Center for installation.
As with SVC V5, SVC V6 software cannot be loaded or run on SVC hardware engine model 2145-4F2.
Unless the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center is already being used with the SVC site, all new SAN Volume Controller installations require the System Storage Productivity Center, which comes with Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Basic Edition.
Current support summaries, including specific software, hardware, and firmware levels supported, are maintained at the SAN Volume Controller Support website
For information on how to order System Storage Productivity Center, refer to Hardware Announcement 110-255, dated November 23, 2010.
For further hardware requirements with new 2145-CG8 clusters, refer to Hardware Announcement 111-083, dated May 09, 2011.
Installation of SVC V6.2 software requires the current upgrade for SVC Software V5.1. Clusters with SVC V18.104.22.168 or later, or any level of V6.1 can be upgraded directly to SVC V6.2. Previous levels of SVC V5.1 must be upgraded to the most recent 5.1 level before being upgraded to V6.2.
Customers running SVC V1 and V2 clusters must first acquire and install the SVC V3 code to enable installation of V4. V4.3.1 is prerequisite to performing a concurrent code load to SVC V5.
For current hardware and software interoperability dependencies and other product environment and configuration information, refer to the SAN Volume Controller product support website at
Software maintenance is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express®, as well as through AAS. Product upgrades and technical support are provided by the Software Maintenance offering as described in the Agreements. Product upgrades provide the latest versions and releases to entitled software, and Technical Support provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations worldwide.
IBM includes one year of software maintenance with each program license acquired. The initial period of software maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. The customer is responsible for ensuring they renew their SWMA coverage for all licensed features and capacities before expiration. Restarting SWMA after expiration will incur a higher charge for that renewal. Note that the AAS ordering system does not provide notification of expiring SWMA contracts. The Passport Advantage system does provide automated renewal capability for SWMA.
