|
IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) V6.1.0 has been designed to provide significant new capabilities to assist storage administrators in their responsibilities, enabling them to manage even broader and more complex storage infrastructures and to get increased performance out of their storage. V6.1.0 is designed to deliver enhancements to SVC in the areas of performance, volume management, system scalability, and includes a redesigned user interface. SVC delivers IBM System Storage Easy Tier which is designed to automate data placement throughout the SVC managed disk group onto two tiers of storage to intelligently align the system with current workload requirements. While accommodating manual control, Easy Tier supports the ability to automatically and nondisruptively relocate data (at the extent level) from one tier to the other in either direction to achieve the best storage performance available.
Customers can benefit from a newly designed user interface that not only delivers many more functional enhancements and greater ease of use, but can be accessed from anywhere on the network with a web browser. Enhancements to the user interface include greater flexibility of views, increased number of characters allowed for naming objects, display of the command lines being executed, and improved user customization. Customers using Tivoli® Storage Productivity Center and IBM System Director can take advantage of greater integration points with the new SVC Console.
SVC interoperability now supports additional storage products including the EMC Symmetrix VMAX and Compellent Fluid Data Storage Series 20.
Customers attaching IBM XIV® Storage Systems to SAN Volume Controller can also benefit from the introduction of a new way to license SAN Volume Controller that will better accommodate the XIV attachment and achieve better price efficiencies under the 5639-SX1 license.
Users of solid-state devices (SSDs) on the SAN Volume Controller 2145-CF8 can not install SVC 6.1.0 at this time.

Note: If the IBM System Storage Productivity Center (SSPC) is not yet installed at the site, it must be ordered with the SVC V6.1 order. SSPC must be ordered via AAS, whether the SVC Software is ordered via AAS or Passport Advantage®.

IBM System Storage Easy Tier
IBM System Storage Easy Tier is designed to help automate data placement throughout the SVC MDisk group (including drive tiers) to intelligently align the system with current workload requirements. This includes the ability for the system to automatically and nondisruptively relocate data (at the extent level) or to model the recommended migration and allow the user to decide which ones to perform. The benefit is to align performance of the system with the appropriate application workloads. SSDs can be managed whether they are internal or external to SVC.
Storage is divided into two tiers within the MDisk group, typically SSD and HDD, though other divisions and definitions are permitted. Volumes in a MDisk group with SSD and HDD will be monitored and can be managed automatically or manually by moving hot extents to SSD and cold extents to HDD.
SVC Console
The SVC Console has a newly designed graphical user interface (GUI) which now runs on the SVC and can be accessed from anywhere on the network using a web browser. While the new design provides many advantages over the former SVC Console, enhancements include greater flexibility of views, increased number of characters allowed for naming objects, display of the command lines being executed, and improved user customization within the GUI. Customers using Tivoli Storage Productivity Center and IBM System Director can take advantage of integration points with the new SVC Console. As with managing the SVC under Tivoli Storage Productivity Center, IBM System Director will be enabled to perform most common day to day activities for SVC without ever needing to leave the IBM System Director user interface. SVC Console users on SVC V5.1 and prior releases will need to migrate from their present user interface to the new user interface when upgrading to SVC V6.1. Refer to the SVC documentation for further instructions.
SVC for XIV (5639-SX1)
The new PID 5639-SX1, IBM SAN Volume Controller for XIV Software V6, is priced by the number of storage devices (also referred to as modules or enclosures). For example, six-module XIV system behind SVC would require a quantity six storage devices of the appropriate feature code under 5639-SX1. There are unique feature codes for the two different drive size offerings from XIV (1 TB and 2 TB). There are no unique feature codes for FlashCopy® and Metro/Global Mirror under 5639-SX1. Use of FlashCopy and Metro/Global Mirror is covered for the capacity of the storage devices licensed under 5639-SX1.
Customers can determine how many enclosures of 5639-SX1 to order by the size of the XIV system configuration. For example, a 12-module XIV configuration has 61 TB usable capacity* for 1TB drives and 125 TB usable capacity* for 2 TB. A customer managing heterogeneous storage with XIV systems would calculate the remaining storage to virtualize under a 5639-VC6 license, by subtracting the usable capacity of the XIV configuration. Customers will use a similar methodology to enter what capacity they are entitled to by adding up the usable capacity of the XIV systems managed under the 5639-SX1 license with the remaining capacity under the 5639-VC6 license. In every other way, other than those points described herein, the 5639-SX1 license is like the 5639-VC6 license (same code prerequisites, same hardware limitations, etc.) which is described in the license information. There is no conversion of 5639-VC6 licenses to 5639-SX1. For existing SAN Volume Controller customers, changes to licensing should be addressed with an IBM sales representative.

SVC V6.1 provides administrators greater flexibility for managed storage by introducing an extent size of 8 GB.
Service Assistant
SVC V6.1 introduces a new method for performing service tasks on the system. In addition to performing service tasks from the front panel you can also service a node through an Ethernet connection using either a web browser or command line interface. The web browser runs a new service application called the Service Assistant. All function that was previously available through the front panel are now available from the Ethernet connection, with the advantages of an easier to use interface and remote access from the cluster.

SVC now supports many more heterogeneous data center environments with the addition of interoperability support for:
- VMware vSphere 4.1
- EMC Symmetrix VMAX
- Compellent Series 20 Storage Controller
- Fujitsu Eternus models DX60, DX80, DX90, DX410, DX8100, DX8300, DX9700
- IBM DS8800

IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller is a virtualization offering designed to virtualize storage within the data center. It is intended to complement other IBM virtualization offerings, such as IBM Power Systems™ and IBM System z® logical partitions (LPARs) and VMware vSphere Server.
The newly introduced IBM Storwize V7000 is targeted to meet the storage and storage virtualization needs of small and medium and businesses, and midmarket customers with SAS-attached storage, while allowing greater expansion capabilities with SAN-attached storage. Together, IBM Storwize V7000 and SAN Volume Controller offerings address virtualization requirements for a wide range of customers from small and medium businesses through midsized to large enterprises.

Specified operating environment
Hardware requirements
This program requires at least one pair of IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller 2145-CF8, 2145-8A4, 2145-8G4, 2145-8F4, or 2145-8F2 storage engines with dual uninterruptible power supplies, and a System Storage Productivity Center for installation.
As with SVC V5, SVC V6 software cannot be loaded or run on SVC hardware engine model 2145-4F2.
Unless the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center is already being used with the SVC site, all new SAN Volume Controller installations require the System Storage Productivity Center, which comes with Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Basic Edition.

Limitations
This program operates on specified storage engine hardware only, currently defined by IBM 2145-CF8, 2145-8A4, 2145-8G4, 2145-8F4, and 2145-8F2 storage engines. Because SAN Volume Controller Software V6 requires 64-bit hardware, SVC V6 cannot run on the IBM 2145-4F2. Customers who want to migrate from currently installed 2145-4F2 models to the newer 2145-CF8 models that ship with SVC V6 software, will need to follow specific migration instructions available at the SAN Volume Controller Support Web Site at

Service support for the IBM System Storage Productivity Center and its operating system, on which the SVC Console software runs, is a customer responsibility (and is separately ordered).
Customers with 5639-VC6 site licenses are responsible to combine the total terabytes managed for each function from individual SAN Volume Controller License Manager (cluster) reports, to ensure they are within site license entitlement for each function.
Installability
Clusters with SAN Volume Controller V5.1.0.7 (or whichever is the latest version of the code) can be upgraded directly to SAN Volume Controller V6.1. Previous levels of SAN Volume Controller V5.1 must be upgraded to the most recent 5.1 level before being upgraded to V6.1.
Customers running SAN Volume Controller V1 and V2 clusters must first acquire and install the SAN Volume Controller V3 code to enable installation of V4. V4.3.1 is prerequisite to performing a concurrent code load to SVC V5.
Note: Clusters with earlier versions of SAN Volume Controller Storage Software priced per terabyte (for example, 5639-VC4) cannot be converted to IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Entry Edition (5639-VW2). A new product purchase is necessary.

Software Maintenance is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express®, as well as through AAS. Product upgrades and technical support are provided by the Software Maintenance offering as described in the Agreements. Product upgrades provide the latest versions and releases to entitled software, and Technical Support provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations worldwide.
IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with each program license acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.
The customer is responsible for ensuring they renew their SWMA coverage for all licensed features and capacities before expiration. Restarting SWMA after expiration will incur a higher charge for that renewal. Note that the AAS ordering system does not provide notification of expiring SWMA contracts. The Passport Advantage system does provide automated renewal capability for SWMA.
Packaging
New order packaging
IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Software V6, 5639-VC6, is preloaded on and shipped with the required IBM 2145 SAN Volume Controller Storage Engines.
After receipt of an order for SAN Volume Controller 5639-VC6 the Business Partner or end customer will be required to register and accept Passport Advantage or Passport Express terms and conditions. Upon registration, the end customer will be authorized for the electronic download of software code updates. The product includes the license and one year of support, with up to four additional years available for purchase with the product.
Note: Renewals and after license SWMA will remain available in AAS for existing SAN Volume Controller customers already entitled in the AAS system.

Security, auditability, and control
The SAN Volume Controller Software V6 uses Secure Shell (SSH) and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocols to communicate between the SAN Volume Controller cluster and the System Storage Productivity Center (SSPC).
Use of supplementary antivirus software is recommended, but not required. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Order handling
The IBM storage software for products identified in this announcement (5639-VC6 and 5639-SX1) will continue to be ordered through existing channels using the existing configurator and ordering tools. However, the fulfillment processes have been modified to improve customer records management associated with "Subscription and Support," often referred to as "Software Maintenance."
Starting with this announcement, the products 5639-VC6 and 5639-SX1 selected during configuration process with each hardware system, will be enabled for electronic download for the system unit for which the product was ordered. Optionally, software and license only configurations can be created for 5639-VC6 and 5639-SX1 based on existing supported hardware system units in your business environment. Offerings in this announcement are available exclusively via electronic download.
New orders placed for 5639-VC6 and 5639-SX1 will be routed and fulfilled through Passport Advantage Express and/or Passport Advantage. Subscription and Support renewals will be managed through Passport Advantage.
Passport Advantage allows greater flexibility to help you manage software licenses and Subscription and Support renewals. You can now have a common anniversary date for Subscription and Support renewals. The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.
Licensing
IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.
This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).
Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance
The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

Limited warranty
IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.
IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at
IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).
Money-back guarantee
If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.
For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

SVC standard software (5639-VC6):
This program (5639-VC6) is licensed on a per-terabyte (with cumulative tiers) site-wide capacity basis. (Refer to the Ordering information section for information on charges for this program.) Users may only install this program on IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller 2145-CF8, 2145-8G4, 2145-8A4, 2145-8F4, and 2145-8F2 Storage Engines, or subsequent IBM replacements of these.
Customers are licensed to use this program only to manage storage capacity within a single site, and only for the amount of storage capacity within that site for which they have received proper authorization from IBM. Customers must obtain a separate license for any additional sites within which they want to use SAN Volume Controller Software V6 (5639-VC6) and obtain separate capacity authorizations for each such site. The 5639-VC6 site license subsumes and supersedes all individual 5639-VC1, 5639-VC2, 5639-VCT, 5639-VC3, 5639-VC4, and 5639-VC5 licenses previously in effect at that site.
A customer's right to use the IBM FlashCopy for SAN Volume Controller and Metro/Global Mirror for SAN Volume Controller features of this program is also limited to the amount of authorizations obtained from IBM. The authorizations for FlashCopy and for Metro/Global Mirror cannot exceed the total capacity authorization for the amount of managed storage on all clusters within the site. Use of FlashCopy features requires license authorizations for only the FlashCopy sources, not the targets.
Use of Metro/Global Mirror features requires license authorizations for both the Metro/Global Mirror source and target capacities in use. Use of the Metro/Global Mirror feature between clusters located in different sites requires separate authorization for each site.
This program is only supported for use with host servers, storage sub-systems, and SAN configurations identified by IBM as being supported for attachment to the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller. This program is provided together with code provided under separate license agreements, including, but not limited to, open source license agreements.
Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) applies
Yes. Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance), is now included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support for the products announced in this announcement is provided by the Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.
IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option.
While your Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at
Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

All distributed software licenses include Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage, for a total of three years from date of acquisition, may be elected.
