Overview
Bottom rule

CICS TG Desktop Edition V8.0 delivers simple and low-cost desktop connectivity for CICS from Microsoft® Windows®, Linux®, and UNIX® systems. It provides access from a single user workstation to the tried and trusted transactional capabilities of the entire family of CICS servers.

CICS TG Desktop Edition communicates with CICS servers through External Call Interface (ECI), External Programming Interface (EPI) and External Security Interface (ESI).

  • ECI helps optimize client and server operation and improve programmer flexibility by keeping business logic on the server and presentation logic on the client.
  • EPI enables the client to programmatically interact with 3270 data-stream-based transactions. There are also 3270 emulation capabilities that enable a workstation to function as a 3270 display or printer for CICS applications.
  • ESI enables appropriate user applications to verify that a password corresponds to an existing user ID, and allows passwords to be changed to facilitate better user ID and password management.

Programming interfaces are provided in Java, .NET, C/C++, COM, and COBOL, and networking options are provided in TCP/IP, IPIC, and SNA LU6.2 to connect to CICS servers. CICS TG Desktop Edition should be considered by anybody looking to distribute single-user, low-cost CICS access, across desktop systems in an enterprise.

Upgrading from CICS Universal Client

CICS TG Desktop Edition provides a simple path forward for CICS Universal Client customers looking to maintain support for their desktop applications with the latest operating systems and compilers.

Furthermore, CICS TG Desktop Edition provides for the first time single-user CICS connectivity for Java and .NET applications, delivering the potential for migration of ECI CICS Universal Client-based applications. For full JEE and server-based CICS connectivity, CICS TG for z/OS® or CICS TG for Multiplatforms is required. For details, refer to CICS TG V8.0 Software Announcement 210-113, dated April 27, 2010.

In addition, support is now provided for the new IP Interconnectivity (IPIC) protocol for CICS, delivering new integration possibilities with CICS channel and container-based applications from both Java and C runtime desktop environments. At the same time a plug-in is also available for the CICS Explorer enabling integrated monitoring of the CICS TG Desktop Edition with other CICS TG or CICS Transaction Server for z/OS (CICS TS) systems.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
