Description
IBM Scale Out Network Attached Storage (SONAS) Software is a scale-out NAS software system designed to manage vast repositories of information. The SONAS Software (5639-SN1) is preloaded and licensed on each node in the IBM SONAS hardware system, including:
- Management node (2851-SM1)
- Interface nodes (2851-SI1)
- Storage nodes (2851-SS1)
The software provides file serving capability to client computer systems using industry standard network file protocols, including:
- Network File System (NFS) v2/v3 (including z/OS NFS client support)
- Microsoft Common Internet File System (CIFS)
- Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
- File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
The SONAS software is capable of interoperating with any client computer system that supports these industry standard network file protocols.
Users accessing data residing in the SONAS system can be authenticated against an external user directory service, such as Microsoft Active Directory (MS AD) or a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) server.
Each file system has support for up to 256 snapshots. Each snapshot copy represents a point-in-time copy of the file system from which prior copies of individual files or directories can be accessed and restored. Windows® users can access prior snapshot copies via the Previous Copies tab on the Windows file properties dialog box.
Quotas can be used to limit the number of files created or amount of space consumed by an individual user, group, or fileset. A fileset is a portion of the file system directory tree. Both soft quotas and hard quotas are supported.
The software provides a unified command line interface for configuring, administrating, and monitoring the system, and a browser-based graphical user interface (GUI) which runs on the SONAS management node (2851-SM1). A client side application is not required in order to configure, monitor, or manage the system. The GUI includes a System Health Center which monitors the overall health of the SONAS system and displays that information in a topology view allowing quick identification when hardware problems occur in the system.
The Health Center includes a centralized alert log to capture all the critical software and hardware failures within the system. In addition to the alert log, the system Health Center also includes a centralized system log. All system logs from all hardware components (including interface nodes, storage nodes, storage controllers, InfiniBand switches, and Ethernet switches) are gathered in a centralized system log on the SONAS management node (2851-SM1). The events in the centralized system log can be filtered by a variety of criteria to allow easy viewing of information of particular interest.
The software provides Call Home capability. When hardware failure occurs within a SONAS system, the software gathers diagnosis data and calls home to IBM via a secure web connection to open a problem reporting record in the IBM Problem Reporting System (RETAIN®) so that IBM is aware of the problem.
The software includes Remote Support capability. IBM Product Field Engineers and service personnel can remotely diagnose problems inside the system via a broadband connection to the system, if approved and authorized by the customer. The approval and authorization is on an individual connection instance basis, meaning the customer must approve and authorize each connection to the system by an IBM service personnel.
The software includes a threshold notification facility allowing the customer to set up thresholds regarding specific operating parameters within the system, and to be notified via e-mail or SNMP alerts when those thresholds are exceeded.
The software also has the capability to have the nodes in a SONAS system synchronize time with an external time server via the Network Time Protocol.
The software includes an installed Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) client that supports TSM environments, including Hierarchical Storage Management and Information Lifecycle Management implementations. The TSM client software is preinstalled to ease integration with the Tivoli environment, but is licensed separately.

Technical information
Hardware requirements
This program requires one of the SONAS Interface Node (2851-SI1), Storage Node (2851-SS1), or Management Node (2851-SM1). Each node in a SONAS system requires one license of the software (5639-SN1) to function.
The license is provided via the charge code that pertains to the corresponding SONAS hardware node. For example, if the SONAS system contains three Interface nodes, one Management node, and two Storage nodes, a corresponding 5639-SN1 must be ordered with a quantity of three Interface node features (#0001), one Management node feature (#0002), and two Storage node features (#0003).
Software requirements
The program's specifications and specified operating environment information may be found in documentation accompanying the program, if available, such as a README file, or other information published by IBM, such as an announcement letter. Documentation and other program content may be supplied only in the English language.
Limitations
This program (5639-SN1) operates on specified SONAS systems only, currently defined by IBM 2851-SI1, 2851-SS1, and 2851-SM1 SONAS nodes.

IBM Electronic Services
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
