The IBM® System Storage™ ProtecTIER® for System z® Gateway solution, comprised of IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z V1R2 software and IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z (3958-DE2) hardware, is designed to help address the tape processing needs of System z data centers.
As part of V1R2, the IP replication function addresses two of the biggest requirements in a deduplication environment today -- Disaster Recovery (DR) capabilities and off-site storage and archiving. V1R2 provides a simple, affordable, over the WAN method to move data to a remote DR site, and supports tape archiving capabilities outside of the primary production environment.

IBM System Storage TS7680 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z, a solution comprised of IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z V1R2 software and IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z (3958-DE2) hardware, is enhanced to include native IP-based replication. This feature is designed to allow users to maintain full copies of the logical volumes at the remote site, while transmitting only unique data that does not already exist in the remote repository.
This integrated solution is designed to address the tape processing needs of System z data centers, by helping to improve the data protection infrastructure and by more cost effectively managing and protecting critical customer data. The TS7680 Solution is designed to provide a high degree of scalability and flexibility and in-line deduplication for enterprise environments.
The IBM System Storage TS7680 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z solution supports:
- Transmission of only unique deduplicated data to the Disaster Recovery (DR) site
- Configurable replication to DR site
- Replication initiated before volume is unloaded
- Volumes are visible to both sites at the same time
- In-line data deduplication virtual tape library (VTL) server, powered by HyperFactor® Technology
- Up to 25 times factoring (Actual deduplication ratios are data-dependent and may vary.)

IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z V1R2 requires IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z hardware (3958 Model DE2).
System z operating system support provided:
- z/OS® V1R10, or later with PTFs
Host software support was provided for the first release of ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z software. Refer to APAR OA27786 for additional information on the support provided. There is no additional host support being provided for V1R2 of ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z software, however, the recommendation is to install the support for the previous software release. Refer to the "3958" and "3952" Preventive Service Planning (PSP) buckets for the latest information on Software Maintenance. PSP buckets are kept on the IBM RETAIN® system and are available to customers at
- z/VM® 5.4, or later including DFSMS/VM™ FL221 with PTFs
Refer to APAR VM64773 for additional information on the support provided in the first release of ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z. There is no additional host support provided for V1R2 of ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z. IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z is a virtual tape library (VTL) that appears to applications as one automated tape library. It is designed to help address backup application needs of System z data centers. System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z V1R2 is typically able to support implementations with minimal change to existing data center policies, practices, or procedures. The host application can access virtual tape drives and cartridges just as it would in a physical tape library environment. Typical System z VTL solutions provide about 2.5:1 compression of the data. IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z, using HyperFactor data deduplication technology, can help significantly reduce the amount of storage capacity required by up to 25 times.
IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V1R2 replication function addresses two of the biggest requirements in a deduplication environment today -- Disaster Recovery (DR) capabilities and off-site storage and archiving. ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z IP replication provides a simple, affordable, over the WAN method to move data to a remote DR site, and supports tape archiving capabilities outside of the primary production environment.

- In-line deduplication: Helps avoid disruption to data protection processes. Competitive product solutions, deployed as a post-process methodology, can increase the time needed for the tape operations window, and require significantly more disk space.
- Flexible disk-based storage options support flexible configurations for different environments.
- Data reduction: Provides up to 25 times data volume reduction. (Actual deduplication ratios are data-dependent and may vary.)
- ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z V1R2 software architecture supports up to 1 PB of data repository.
- High-availability: Clustered configuration available to provide hardware redundancy in the event of a node failure.
- Data integrity: HyperFactor Technology helps avoid "hash collisions" or "false positive" data matches.

Specified operating environment
Hardware requirements
IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z, IBM 3958 Model DE2 hardware, as defined in Hardware Announcement 110-056, dated February 09, 2010.
Additional hardware, defined in the announcement for IBM 3958-DE2, is required to complete the TS7680 deduplication solution.
ProtecTIER Manager
ProtecTIER Manager is required for operations of ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z.
The ProtecTIER Manager may be installed on the TSSC attached to the TS7680 Deduplication Gateway for System z or the customer may install the ProtecTIER Manager on their own workstation. If a TSSC is installed in the TS7680 Deduplication Gateway for System z, the ProtecTIER Manager is pre-installed on that TSSC.
Windows® XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008 Red Hat Enterprise 4, or later (ProtecTIER Manager is not supported in RHEL 5.4) Linux® MCP 32-bit.
The workstation must also have:
- At least 100 MB of available disk space
- At least 256 MB of RAM
The workstation must have access to the ProtecTIER service nodes at IP address. (Port 3501 is open on the firewall.)
The ProtecTIER Manager can support more than one ProtecTIER server. If the ProtecTIER Manager workstation is connected to more that one ProtecTIER server, they can be connected to a workstation via a switch box or via a terminal server. The workstation and switch box must be provided by the customer. Confer with your IBM representative for workstation configuration alternatives.
Software requirements
ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z is supported on z/OS V1R10, or later (refer to APAR OA27786) and z/VM V5R4, or later including DFSMS/VM FL221 (refer to APAR VM64773). ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z appears to the host as a standard automated tape library with tape drives attached, and is DFSMS (SMSTAPE) compliant. The APARs referenced above were provided for the first release of ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z and those same APARs apply to V1R2.
Replication policies for z/OS
Replication in a z/OS environment is not typically done by a policy over a VOLSER range. It is recommended that you configure a default policy for all volumes, or a policy for all VOLSER ranges that are inserted into the library to be replicated. In general, with z/OS (and system-managed tape), selective replication by VOLSER range is not supported and would be controlled at the common scratch pool level. Reason being, a common scratch pool is used for scratch mounts, so all of the data (VOLSER ranges) associated with a common scratch pool is either replicated or it isn't. Then on an exception basis, some applications or jobs could be set up to mount by specific VOLSER allowing some amount of selective replication by VOLSER range.
IBM is planning to add support for Advanced Policy Management in the next ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z release, which will allow the user to define workload-specific replication policies.
Replication policies for z/VM
Replication in a z/VM environment can be configured by a VOLSER range. When a VOLSER is inserted within a range with a defined replication policy, then that VOLSER is replicated. If a VOLSER is inserted into the library and there is no default policy for that VOLSER range, then the VOLSER is not replicated.
Operating system prerequisites
A Linux operating system is included with the IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z V1R2 and is loaded on ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z.

IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z V1R2 is only supported for installation on IBM System Storage TS7680 ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway for System z (3958-DE2) hardware.

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance
The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for subscription and support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.
These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.
For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

All distributed software licenses include Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.
While your Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at
Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.
