Overview
IBM GPFS is a cluster file system designed for high-performance parallel file transfers and parallel I/O to single or multiple files. GPFS delivers proven reliability, multicluster support, scalability, and performance with automated failure recovery, and decentralized data management for simplifying administration.
GPFS V3.4 adds support for:
- Enhanced Windows cluster support:
- Windows Server 2008 R2 x64.
- Directly attached disks support higher bandwidth via local I/O: The use of fully SAN-connected Windows clusters may enable much higher bandwidth to Windows systems using GPFS, and SAN connectivity may provide greater flexibility in configuring GPFS clusters.
- Homogeneous Windows clusters: GPFS clusters can now be formed using only Windows nodes; Linux® or AIX® are
no longer required as NSD servers. The Windows nodes can perform most of the
required management and administrative operations. The exceptions include:
- Certain GPFS commands to apply policy, administer quotas and ACLs.
- The ability to mount DMAPI-enabled file systems.
- Support for Tivoli® Storage Manager (TSM) Backup Archive client or the native Windows Backup utility
Refer to the GPFS Concepts, Planning and Installation Guide for a full list of limitations.
- Further improvements in performance and scalability:
- Extended attributes for a file can now be stored in the file's i-node. This can improve the performance of applications that use extended attributes and reduce the amount of disk space required to store them. This change enables the high-performance GPFS policy engine to refer to extended attributes with the same scale-out performance as the regular file attributes, providing richer semantics to content managers and middleware.
- Support for more than 2,147,483,648 files in a file system. For the current maximum tested limit, see the GPFS FAQs at
- A new diagnostic command: The new mmdiag command better enables IBM Service to determine the state of your GPFS cluster.

Description
GPFS delivers file system services to parallel and serial applications. It gives parallel applications simultaneous access to the same or different files from any node that has the GPFS file system mounted, while managing a high level of control over all file system operations. GPFS is particularly appropriate in an environment where the aggregate peak need for data bandwidth exceeds the capability of a distributed file system server.
Accessibility by people with disabilities
A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at
Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act
GPFS is capable as of June 11, 2010, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be requested at

Product positioning
GPFS is ideal for several different workloads:
- A multicluster file system providing a global namespace across clusters for parallel processing on compute clusters, featuring extreme scalability and throughput optimized for streaming workloads such as those common in Web 2.0, digital media, scientific, and engineering applications.
- An information life cycle management file system, enabling multiple tiers of storage, including tape, with powerful policy-driven file placement, migration, archival, and deletion. This makes GPFS the perfect base for a content library or archival system by mixing cost-effective storage of infrequently accessed data with the global namespace for easy accessibility. The unique GPFS policy engine enables file migration scalable to billions of files and multiple petabytes of data.
- A scalable, shared storage file system for storage consolidation and virtualization. This includes Clustered NFS support, providing a scalable shared namespace, enabling horizontally scalable file serving. Additionally, GPFS includes many storage management features, including storage hardware-agnostic snapshots, and mirroring.
- A high availability file system for any business application or database that may benefit from active/active data access from multiple nodes and very rapid failover of a consistent application data environment.

Terms and conditions
The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.
Licensing
IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.
This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).
Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance
The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for subscription and support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.
These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.
License Information form number
L-LMUY-84AR4T
The program's License Information will be available for review on the IBM Software License Agreement Web site
Limited warranty applies
Yes
Limited warranty
IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.
IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at
IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).
Money-back guarantee

If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.
For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.
Authorization for use on home/portable computer
You may not copy and use this program on another computer without paying additional license fees.
Volume orders (IVO)
Yes. Contact your IBM representative.
Passport Advantage applies
No
Usage restriction
Yes. GPFS has two types of licenses, a Server license and a Client license. For each node in a GPFS cluster (see Permitted use of GPFS Server and GPFS Client below), the customer determines the appropriate number of GPFS Server or GPFS Client licenses that correspond to the way GPFS is used on that node (a node is defined as one operating system instance on a single computer or running in a virtual partition).
During GPFS cluster configuration, the customer is prompted to identify whether a particular node is a GPFS Server or a GPFS Client. If a GPFS Client is chosen, function that requires a GPFS Server license will be disabled on this node. Because the node that acts as the GPFS cluster configuration server requires a GPFS Server designation, at least one node in the GPFS cluster requires a GPFS Server license.
Permitted use of GPFS Server and GPFS Client:
You may use the GPFS Server in order to perform the following GPFS functions:
- Management functions such as cluster configuration manager, quorum node, manager node, and NSD server
- Sharing data through any application, service protocol, or method, such as Network File System (NFS), Common Internet File System (CIFS), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), or Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
You may use a GPFS Client license when the nodes are exchanging data between nodes that locally mount the same GPFS file system. The GPFS Client may not be used for nodes to share GPFS data through any application, service, protocol, or method, such as NFS, CIFS, FTP, or HTTP. For this use, entitlement to GPFS Server is required.
Note: Refer to the GPFS FAQs available from the following Web site for
more information, including example configurations and license definitions
regarding the new GPFS Server and GPFS Client model
For additional information, refer to the License Information document that is available on the IBM Software License Agreement Web site
Software Subscription and Support applies
Yes. All distributed software licenses include Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.
While your Software Subscription and Support is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at
Software Subscription and Support does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
