Overview
Bottom rule

IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS) LoadLeveler V4.1 is a versatile workload management system for serial and parallel batch jobs that schedules applications to clusters of IBM servers. TWS LoadLeveler supports load balancing for interactive parallel operating environment sessions, and focuses on parallel job scheduling and scalability.

With TWS LoadLeveler, end users can view a cluster of systems as a single computational resource, dispatching jobs and balancing the workload across various systems in the network with optimum productivity.

TWS LoadLeveler for Linux® supports an interoperable environment with LoadLeveler for AIX®. AIX and Linux nodes can be mixed within the same cluster. LoadLeveler can then dispatch jobs to run on both Linux and AIX servers.

In Version 4.1, TWS LoadLeveler offers configuration enhancements and database support. LoadLeveler supports sharing a MySQL database configured by Extreme Cloud Administrative Toolkit (xCAT) V2.3 to store configuration data.

TWS LoadLeveler is packaged with separate installation images for the resource manager and job scheduler. Each software package has its own set of externals such as commands and APIs.

TWS LoadLeveler for AIX supports parallel checkpoint restart with the MetaCluster Relocation (MCR) software, which makes use of the container-based virtualization technology to relocate applications as necessary.

Description
Bottom rule

TWS LoadLeveler schedules jobs and provides functions for building, submitting, and processing jobs quickly and efficiently in a dynamic environment.

Batch jobs can be submitted, either serial or parallel, to run in the background and require no input from the user. TWS LoadLeveler scheduling algorithms use the availability of consumable resources to determine the machine or machines on which a job will run.

TWS LoadLeveler supports a rich set of configuration keywords. For sites using xCAT and LoadLeveler, LoadLeveler's configuration data can be stored in the same MySQL database that xCAT configures. An option is provided to check the validity of configuration data in files or databases. Among keyword and command enhancements is the capability for configuring groups of machines with common characteristics. After the configuration data specified by the administrator is read from the configuration files or database, it is stored in shared memory for quick access by LoadLeveler daemons and processes.

TWS LoadLeveler is packaged with separate installation images for the resource manager and job scheduler. Each software package has its own set of externals such as commands and APIs. A user can have the option of installing just the LoadLeveler resource manager, which is also packaged with the Parallel Environment product, or installing both the LoadLeveler resource manager and scheduler functions, as available in the TWS LoadLeveler product today.

A well-defined API is created and made available in the LoadLeveler resource manager to allow a robust and efficient interaction with any scheduler.

In making use of this API, a third-party scheduling software product can easily provide the scheduling functions to users, in a similar way as the TWS LoadLeveler scheduler does, while taking advantage of the specific features provided in the TWS LoadLeveler resource manager.

New daemons and new methods are provided to generate adapter discovery and to monitor node and adapter liveness. With this update, TWS LoadLeveler no longer uses Reliable Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) and Resource Monitoring and Control (RMC) to obtain the information -- it is generated and monitored by LoadLeveler.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

Bottom rule

TWS LoadLeveler provides an excellent framework for managing both serial and parallel batch workload in a single cluster as well as multicluster environments. Jobs can be submitted within the same LoadLeveler cluster or across multiple clusters on a grid. TWS LoadLeveler supports load balancing for interactive parallel operating environment sessions and provides various advanced job scheduling functions in a large-scale parallel computing environment.

The program's specifications and specified operating environment information may be found in documentation accompanying the program, if available, such as a readme file, or other information published by IBM, such as an announcement letter. Documentation and other program content may be supplied only in the English language.

Companion products

IBM Parallel Environment V5.2 provides a high-function parallel application development environment that can reduce the time and effort required to develop parallel applications. These parallel applications could then be run with TWS LoadLeveler.

Extreme Cloud Administrative Toolkit (xCAT) V2, an open source scalable distributed computing management and provisioning tool available from SourceForge, offers a unified interface for deploying and managing large systems. LoadLeveler shares the MySQL database configured by xCAT to store configuration data.

IBM provides support services for xCAT. IBM Support for xCAT delivers the technical support clients need to confidently manage their large systems. Refer to Software Announcement 208-234, dated September 09, 2008.

Compatibility

TWS LoadLeveler V4.1 cannot coexist in a mixed environment with previous versions. In order to migrate from a previous version, LoadLeveler must be rendered quiescent.

Limitations

The checkpoint restart function is only available when running AIX 6.1. It is not available running the AIX 5.3 or Linux operating systems.

InfiniBand support on POWER7 is limited to the Power 755.

IBM Blue Gene® Systems are not supported with Version 4.1 of TWS LoadLeveler. Blue Gene customers should reference their statement of work for support and requirement information.

Planning information

TWS LoadLeveler V4.1 is the last release to support the AIX V5 operating system.

RDMA with InfiniBand adapters and the scheduling affinity function is supported on IBM Power Systems only running SLES 11 only.

If you plan to configure TWS LoadLeveler to support the database configuration option, xCAT 2.3, or later, is required.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which this software product can be licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor technology (defined within the PVU table1 by processor vendor, brand, type, and model number). IBM continues to define a processor, for purposes of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. Each software product has a unique price per PVU. To determine the total cost of deploying an individual software product in a specific hardware environment, you must take the following steps:

PVU entitlements are specific to a software product and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another software product.

Unless you have deployed eligible sub-capacity products according to the sub-capacity1 terms, you must obtain PVU Proof of Entitlements (PoEs) for the maximum number of activated2 physical processor cores in the hardware environment made available to, or managed by, the software product. This is also referred to as full capacity licensing.

1
For information regarding PVU and sub-capacity licensing, including the latest PVU table, visit
http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/ pvu_licensing_for_customers.html
2
Activated processor cores are physical processor cores that are available for use in a server. They include processor cores:
  • That are activated (available for use) when the server is shipped by the manufacturer
  • That are activated subsequently through activation codes purchased from the server manufacturer by the customer
  • Whose capacity can be limited by the customer through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, and BIOS settings.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
