IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager V4.3

Active Energy Manager (AEM) V4.3, an IBM Systems Director V6.2 plug-in, is designed to simplify the management of energy consumption across multiple IBM and non-IBM systems. AEM tracks energy use over time and can assist you in determining how to reallocate energy to additional servers without adding additional energy or cooling equipment. When energy is constrained, AEM is designed to allow energy to be allocated on a server-to-server basis.

AEM is also designed to track and allocate energy consumption in a manner intended not to affect performance. Sensors and alerts can warn you if limiting energy to a server could affect performance.

AEM is designed to increase your capability to control energy consumption and improve energy use efficiency, which can potentially result in savings and cost reductions.

AEM has the ability to monitor and manage energy for POWER7™ servers.

AEM is intended to help you:

  • Increase energy use efficiency by controlling energy use across the data center
  • Negotiate competitive utility rates based on accurate energy use trend assessments
  • Limit server energy consumption by capping maximum energy consumption
  • Perform server-to-server energy consumption comparisons

By enabling you to meter energy use and trend historical data, AEM is designed to help reduce energy costs in the data center. AEM is also designed to complement and integrate with higher-level management software such as Tivoli. AEM interfaces with the IBM Tivoli Monitoring products and other Tivoli products.

AEM V4.3 can help protect your IT investment through its open design and support for industry standards, which enables heterogeneous physical and virtual management with support for multiple platforms and operating systems. AEM V4.3 is designed to provide monitoring functions for devices that can connect to select power distribution units (PDUs). This enables monitoring functions for some systems that do not have support for AEM; for example, older servers and low- and mid-range storage devices. By plugging these systems into an intelligent PDU (a smart power strip), AEM is designed to be able to collect energy information from I/O drawers plugged into the PDU, providing a more complete view of energy used in the data center.

Additionally, AEM provides users power management functions for intelligent PDUs. Through AEM, users can turn off individual outlets on the PDUs. This allows administrators to prevent the plugging in of unauthorized equipment in a rack. It also provides a way to quick cut power usage in case of emergencies. New in this release is support for PDUs from Server Technologies and Geist.

Power trending is a monitoring function that displays energy use for individual systems or groups of systems over time (in a graph or table format) to help enable you to understand energy use trends within and across your systems.

Thermal trending is a monitoring function that displays information on the inlet and exhaust temperatures for individual systems, one at a time, to help you understand thermal characteristics of your systems. Incorporating this data into one centralized software-based energy use offering allows finite and localized temperature adjustments within the IT shop to help reduce energy costs for cooling.

Support for facility providers is a function that retrieves information from Emerson Network Power's SiteScan application, APC's InfraStruXure Central V5.1 and V6.0, and Eaton's Power Xpert Meter V2.0 and Foreseer. Numerous attributes associated with the energy usage of power and cooling equipment can be collected and made available through AEM. This provides a broader scope of energy information within the data center while including a view of facilities equipment. New in this release is the ability to integrate with the newest releases of these products.

Eaton's Power Xpert V2.0 and Power Xpert Reporting V2.0 are supported for monitoring power and cooling infrastructure with AEM 4.3.

Support for sensors is a function that retrieves temperature and power information via sensors. Supported vendors include SynapSense, iButton, Sensatronics, and Arch Rock. In AEM V4.3, this sensor data can now be associated with Systems Director-managed resources. This provides a broader scope of energy information across systems within the data center, while including a view of facilities equipment.

In addition, power and cooling relationships can be configured to servers for all of the above PDUs, sensors, and equipment discovered from the infrastructure management providers. This allows energy data and events to be associated with the servers that use them.

Power capping is designed to allow you to set a maximum energy level per system. If the system starts to consume more than the maximum level set, AEM is designed to throttle the processor to use less energy, which slows down the server. This feature is designed to come into play it if gets too warm in the data center. Setting the cap will ensure that the system will not use more than the cap value, thus allowing the user to allocate less power for that system. New in AEM 4.3 is the ability to set power limits using ac power. Previous versions of AEM only supported capping dc power; however, data center managers are more interested in tracking ac power.

Power saver mode is designed to allow you to manage your energy use as work activity shifts across various demands. Static power saving mode is enabled via an on/off switch, which you can schedule during times of low utilization, or a script can be written so that it can be switched automatically, based on processor utilization. Users can choose to put systems in this mode when they are not being used heavily, or can do this automatically. This can result in significant energy cost savings.

IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition for Power Systems, V2.3

IBM Systems Director VMControl V2.3 provides management simplification, improves system efficiencies within the data center, and leverages the flexibility and power of virtualization for single systems and pools of cooperating systems. VMControl has been enhanced to provide support and virtual appliance enhancements for IBM Power Systems running the Linux operating system.

New enhancements added to VMControl Standard Edition V2.3 allow virtual appliances to be:

  • Deployed, captured, and managed for Linux
  • Managed in repositories including deletion, search, and version control
  • Captured from virtualized workloads

VMControl Standard Edition enables a complete set of image management tools that builds upon the capabilities offered in the previous release with additional tasks to search, delete, and manage virtual machine images (also known as virtual appliances ) for Power Systems.

VMControl Standard Edition is designed to simplify the management of virtual environments across multiple virtualization technologies and physical platforms to support the growing requirements of a dynamic infrastructure. IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition provides support to manage and automate the deployment of virtual appliances (images) from a centralized location. A virtual appliance is a single system image, consisting of an operating system instance and the software stack running on that operating system (for example, middleware and applications). A virtual appliance can be captured from a running system or imported from an industry-standard (OVF) package. A full-function graphical user interface and command-line interface is also designed to help improve productivity by allowing you to decide which virtual appliance management tasks to perform and which information you want to be displayed.

VMControl Standard Edition delivers support that controls the life cycle, provisioning, and configuration of virtual appliances. It captures information from active systems and stores the information in a repository of system images. IBM Systems Director VMControl Standard Edition enables the creation and management of virtual servers when deploying AIX (by leveraging NIM) and Linux on Power virtual appliances. The definition of these system images is based on Open Virtualization Format (OVF) specifications.

VMControl Standard Edition allows new virtual appliances to be created by importing OVF standard packages or capturing running virtual servers. You can import a virtual appliance that is based on the open standards format defined for virtual appliances. This feature provides interoperability with external ways of creating virtual appliances, as well as a means of transporting your virtual appliances. You can also create a virtual appliance by capturing a fully-tested, running software stack (operating system, middleware, and applications) on supported virtual servers.

The virtual appliances within VMControl are kept in platform-specific repositories. VMControl supports the discovery of multiple repositories of multiple types and presents a central point of control with common cross-platform functions for the management of the repositories and virtual appliances within the repositories. The virtual appliances within all repositories can be viewed from this interface, and actions, such as deploy, can be taken on individual virtual appliances from this interface.

Deployment of virtual appliances is a key function for VMControl, which includes support for multiple IBM servers. It provides a simplified, streamlined interface integrated with IBM System Director to select a virtual appliance and request that it be deployed to an existing virtual server or to a new virtual server. As part of the request to deploy, you can optionally customize the virtual appliance for the target environment for such aspects as networking and initial boot configuration. As the deployment process occurs, you can view the progress. After deployment is complete, VMControl Standard Edition allows you to view the resulting virtual server and its status. You can also view the history of all deployments of a given virtual appliance.

VMControl Standard Edition manages virtualized appliances within the data center: It does this by providing the means to discover, organize, and catalog virtualized images across heterogeneous image repositories; and by enabling the deployment, capture, and customization of virtual appliances across IBM platforms. It also allows for version control of virtual appliances and deletion of virtual appliances from a repository. The capabilities of VMControl combine to make the creation and management of dynamic business applications environments simpler, and can help reduce service and support costs.

This integration provides the capability to contextually launch IBM Systems Director from IBM Tivoli Monitoring to perform configuration changes/start/stop LPARs and perform other actions.
  • Storage Utilization by LPAR (VIOS): The VIOS Storage Mapping workspace was enhanced to include disk transfers related to the client partition. With this feature, the customer is able to easily view storage utilization by LPAR, reducing mean time to repair.
  • NPIV Client/Server Mappings (VIOS agent): Virtual Fibre Channel adapters make use of an industry standard called N-Port ID Virtualization (NPIV), which allows enabled Fibre Channel adapters to be configured with 64 virtual ports. A new workspace in the VIOS agent provides the name of the physical port, the number of virtual ports, and the number of available virtual ports. This workspace also maps the client partitions to the physical and virtual NPIV ports. There is also a situation to indicate a low number of available virtual ports. This data provides the ability to understand how the Fibre Channel (FC) is being used by the LPAR. The available number of ports data indicates whether additional ports/FC are required.
  • Shared Pool Data (CEC and AIX Premium agents): In the CEC agent, customers are now able to view statistics for multiple shared pools to include pool ID, CPU units consumed, number of LPARs using the pool, available CPU units in the pool, and pool entitlement and maximum pool capacity. Customers can sort the LPAR utilization table by shared pool ID to understand usage of the pool by the LPAR. There is a situation that provides an alert if the number of available CPUs in the shared pool is low.

The AIX premium agent also provides the pool ID in the system work space. With this feature, the customer is able to determine which LPARs are using CPU from the shared pool and whether more CPU should be assigned to that LPAR.

Hypervisor™ Time (AIX and VIOS agents): An attribute and situation were added to the AIX premium and VIOS agents to indicate the CPU time the LPAR spent in the hypervisor. It provides the amount of time the hypervisor is spending to troubleshoot when excessive CPU is due to the number of hypervisor calls.

New Performance Analyzer: This feature extends IBM Tivoli Monitoring data to predictive trending to manage performance over time. It provides the ability to forecast resource trends to focus monitoring on emerging problems and leverage the long-term historical and real-time data in Tivoli Data Warehouse.

IBM Tivoli ITM System p Agents V6.2.2

A new POWER7 feature provides Active Memory™ Expansion (AME) and support for 1,024 CPUs and provides customers with a global view by frame on how well AME is used by LPAR and how much CPU is consumed by AME.

Additional new features include:

  • LPAR Migration Metrics, which provides visualization when an LPAR is migrated, when an LPAR is created, and when an LPAR is removed. In addition, ITM can provide an alert when these conditions occur.
  • A tabular view of all CECs and LPARs managed by the HMC provides customers with a global view of how all the CECs and LPARs are configured for the HMC with basic status information.
  • Network Adapter Bandwidth gives customers a view of true network utilization so they can understand if performance problems are due to physical capacity limitations.
  • A new Tivoli Common Reporting component provides the ability to report on historical and predictive trends. This feature includes out-of-the-box reports that provide an understanding of utilization for all frames in the environment, for all LPARs in a frame, how LPARs are using the shared pool, top and bottom LPAR utilization, and other reports. In addition to the OPAL BIRT reports, new Cognos-based OS Agent Reports are provided.

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Energy Management V6.2.1

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Energy Management is a powerful energy monitoring tool that provides a link between the domains of energy management and service management -- a key product in your arsenal of tools to monitor and help manage energy use while maintaining service levels. IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Energy Management helps businesses monitor key energy metrics, provide alerts when critical energy situations are identified, and take actions in response. Included with the product are reports and portlets that provide visibility into energy usage, costs, carbon footprint, and industry-standard metrics. Additionally, IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Energy Management provides energy information to other service management tools so that energy can be monitored in the wider context of the IT services it supports.

IBM Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager 7.2

The Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager (TADDM) component provides these key features:

  • Discovery of the Power Systems physical and virtual environment and their dependencies. In regards to Power Systems, TADDM:
    • Provides a clear, comprehensive view of interdependencies between applications, computer systems, and network devices, using agent-less and credential-free discovery and automated application mapping
    • Allows you to view detailed change histories, rapidly isolate changes, and minimize problem isolation time
    • Tracks how applications, computer systems, and network devices are configured and changing over time
    • Determines if configurations comply with your policies
    • Is designed to provide change events and ensure compliance of servers/LPARs against a "gold standard"

The TADDM Monitoring Coverage Report:

  • Highlights resources that are not monitored by collecting data that it extracts from ITM with other data that it has discovered.
  • Is used in conjunction with the ITM Discovery Library Adapter that is shipped with ITM. Administrators use the report as an informational tool in deciding which computer system to deploy ITM monitoring agents for databases and operating systems.

TADDM provides a launch in context to ITM to view performance and availability metrics. Combining the Monitoring Coverage Report with other IBM solutions allows you to deploy ITM agents to resources that are not monitored by using ITM's remote deployment feature.

Processor

Processor is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. Processor (commonly called a processor core or CPU) is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be acquired for all activated processor cores available for use on the server. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.

IBM Systems Director Editions use a per processor charging metric. A license is required for each processor on each machine running IBM Systems Director Editions and each processor on each machine being managed by IBM Systems Director Editions, based on the size of the server. As of this announcement, servers are categorized as small, medium, or large.

The quantity of software license and IBM Software Maintenance (SWMA) entitlements required is based on the total number of processors in each of the Power Systems servers running or being managed by IBM Systems Director and the processor tier (small, medium, and large).

System Program Order (SPO)

An order for SPO 5692-A5L, 5692-A6P, or 5692-LOP is mandatory for delivery of program media or publications. The individual licensed program orders are for registration and billing purposes only. No physical deliveries occur as a result of those orders.

Specify feature number 3435.

Machine-readable materials are only available on DVD. To receive shipment of machine-readable materials, the order needs to include SPO 5692-A5L, 5692-A6P, or 5692-LOP. The individual licensed program order (for example, 5765-EXP) must still be ordered but will be for registration and billing purposes only and will not result in shipment of materials.

The System Program Order must also contain the following features to deliver a machine-readable copy of the product using the currently available media.

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for subscription and support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Yes

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Authorization for use on home/portable computer

You may not copy and use this program on another computer without paying additional license fees.

Yes. Contact your IBM representative.

Passport Advantage applies

Usage restrictions

Yes. IBM Systems Director Standard Edition and IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition include a limited-use version of IBM Systems Director Network Control (Network Control) and are subject to the following license restrictions: the licensee is authorized to perform network device management, such as discovery, inventory, and monitoring status, and to use network diagnostics. Any other use of Network Control, including advanced network topology views, and configuration of host VLANs, requires a full-use license of Network Control, which must be obtained separately.

IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition includes a limited-use version of:

  • IBM Tivoli Monitoring
  • IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Energy Management
  • IBM Tivoli Network Management
  • IBM Tivoli Application Dependency and Discovery Manager
  • IBM DB2 Enterprise Server Edition

IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition license includes the use of these programs on the AIX platform to manage Power Systems servers on which the program is licensed, up to the level specified in a PoE, invoice, license, or other document from IBM describing entitlement to use IBM Systems Director Enterprise Edition.

For additional information, refer to the License Information document that is available on the IBM Software License Agreement Web site

http://www.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf
Software Subscription and Support applies

Yes. All distributed software licenses include Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and the Service and Support Manager plug-in for IBM Director which uses an integrated version of Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

Service and Support Manager is a no-fee plug-in for IBM Systems Director. Service and Support Manager automatically detects serviceable hardware problems and collects supporting data for serviceable hardware problems that occur on your monitored endpoint systems. The Electronic Service Agent tool is integrated with Service and Support Manager and transmits serviceable hardware problems, and associated support files to the IBM service provider. Electronic Service Agent also transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
