Overview
Bottom rule

AIX® Express® Edition is a new IBM® offering that includes the AIX 6 operating system, an open standards-based UNIX® operating system that provides the enterprise-class information technology infrastructure for thousands of clients around the world.

AIX Express Edition is designed to deliver AIX functionality at a lower price point for workloads such as the consolidation of smaller workloads on a larger server or for workloads running on smaller systems that do not need the vertical scalability of AIX Standard Edition. AIX Express Edition is limited to a maximum of four processor cores in a partition with a maximum of 8 Gb of memory per processor core. Clients can run multiple partitions with AIX Express Edition in a single server as long as each partition is running no more than four processor cores. Clients can mix partitions with AIX Express Edition, AIX Standard Edition, and AIX Enterprise Edition in the same server.

AIX 6 Express Edition includes all features of AIX 6 Standard Edition:

  • IBM PowerVM™ Workload Partitions Manager™ for AIX -- software-based virtualization
  • 64-bit kernel for higher scalability and performance
  • Dynamic logical partitioning and Micro-Partitioning™ support:
    • Automated load balancing
    • Online addition or removal of processors, memory, and I/O resources
  • Support for dedicated and shared processor LPAR groups
  • Trusted AIX: Multi-level, compartmentalized security
  • Integrated Role Based Access Control
  • Encrypting JFS2 file system
  • Kernel exploitation of storage keys for greater reliability
  • Concurrent AIX kernel updates, which can reduce the need for planned outages
  • Dynamic tracing with probevue
  • Robust journaled file system and Logical Volume Manager (LVM) software, including integrated file system snapshot
  • Tools for managing your systems environment -- System Management Interface Tool (SMIT) and the IBM Systems Director Console for AIX

In addition to AIX Express Edition, IBM is announcing enhancements to PowerVM Virtualization.

PowerVM 2.1.3 enhancements

  • Includes support for N-port ID virtualization (NPIV) on Fibre Channel over converged Enhanced Ethernet (FCoCEE)
  • Supports more than 128 partitions with Active Memory™ Sharing
  • Supports the use of the AIX Run Time Expert to provide profile-based management of VIOS performance and other configuration aspects

IBM PowerVM Lx86 simplifies the migration of Linux® x86 applications to Power® servers, enabling customers to realize the energy and administration savings of consolidation. With this announcement, PowerVM Lx86 V1.4 adds support for the new IBM POWER7™ processor-based servers as well as continuous performance improvements. Also, PowerVM Lx86 V1.4 now enables Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 x86 applications to run on Power alongside AIX, i, and Linux applications. PowerVM Lx86 V1.4 is available at no additional charge to all entitled PowerVM customers.

For PowerVM Lx86, refer to Software Announcement 208-010, dated January 29, 2008.

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

License Information form number

The program's License Information will be available for review on the IBM Software License Agreement Web site

http://www.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf
Limited warranty applies

Yes

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Authorization for use on home/portable computer

You may not copy and use this program on another computer without paying additional license fees.

Other terms: Authorized Use

You are only authorized to use the programs to the same extent as provided in the Proofs of Entitlement for the AIX operating system, and on additional temporary processors for which you have rightfully acquired, from IBM or its authorized reseller, the right to use on a temporary basis.

IBM customers are entitled to use the AIX program in accordance with the IBM license agreement. For example:

AIX Express Edition

  • License entitlements for AIX Express Edition cannot exceed a maximum of four processors per logical partition (LPAR) and a maximum of 8 GB per processor of memory (a maximum of four processors of processing capacity and 32 GB of memory per LPAR).

AIX Standard Edition

  • License entitlements for AIX Standard Edition cannot exceed a maximum of 64 processors per LPAR.

AIX Enterprise Edition

  • License entitlements for AIX Enterprise Edition cannot exceed a maximum of 64 processors per LPAR.

Clients may mix partitions running the three editions of the AIX operating system in the same physical server as long as each partition running the AIX operating system meets the licensing requirements of that AIX Edition and the client has sufficient license entitlements for all processors running the AIX operating system.

Volume orders (IVO)

Yes. Contact your IBM representative.

Passport Advantage applies

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
