What's new
In WebSphere Remote Server V7.1, there are many changes affecting the bundling structure.
IBM WebSphere Remote Server Standard Edition is no longer available and being replaced by a combination of IBM Retail Store Server Starter Edition and IBM Tivoli Monitoring and Provisioning Add On for IBM Retail Store Server, the same level of functionality is achieved by combining the two bundles. Current WebSphere Remote Server Standard Edition will be entitled to both the IBM Retail Store Server Starter edition and the IBM Tivoli Monitoring and Provisioning Add On for IBM Retail Store Server.
IBM Retail Store Server Advanced Edition now only includes the base middleware components: WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere MQ, DB2 Workgroup Server Edition (or Informix Dynamic Server), and WebSphere sMash. To obtain monitoring and provisioning capabilities, a new bundle must be purchased: IBM Tivoli Monitoring and Provisioning Add On for IBM Retail Store Server. Current customers will be entitled to both the IBM Retail Store Server Advanced Edition and the IBM Tivoli Monitoring and Provisioning Add On for IBM Retail Store Server.
In previous releases, WebSphere Remote Server Standard and Advanced editions included the following Tivoli products: IBM Tivoli Monitoring, IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Database, Tivoli Omegamon XE for Messaging for Distributed Systems, and IBM Tivoli Composite Application Manager for Web Racecourses. These products have been replaced by the IBM Tivoli Composite Manager for Applications V6.2.
IBM Tivoli Composite Application Manager for Applications V6.2 provides:
- Proactive performance and availability monitoring across the entire distributed application resource environment
- Centralized data warehousing, reporting, and visualization
- Scalability to the largest enterprises
- A customized view of performance and availability metrics (by job, geography, application, and so on) that can be tailored without requiring services
- Automation to reduce mistakes and improve productivity, such as correlation of events and automated response to specific events
- A knowledge center with expert advice to improve operator productivity
- Integration with TEP, Omnibus, and IBM Tivoli Business System Manager (TBSM) for complete end-to-end service management coverage
Additionally, IBM Tivoli Provisioning for Software has been replaced by IBM Tivoli Provisioning; more details follow in the product detail section.

WebSphere sMash is designed to improve developer productivity and efficiency through the support of dynamic scripting languages. These scripting languages are easy to learn, have a large number of reusable assets, and allow developers to focus on business logic instead of low-level functions when they need to write code.
WebSphere sMash can provide numerous benefits to clients and IBM Business Partners, including:
- Improved developer productivity and efficiency
- Simplified deployment of applications
- Increased customer satisfaction and line-of-business (LOB) productivity by streamlining end-user interaction with Web-based applications
- Access to a growing online development community of users and the WebSphere sMash development team
Improved developer productivity and efficiency:
- WebSphere sMash contains a scripting runtime environment for Groovy and PHP. This gives IBM Business Partners and clients access to programmers from the large and growing PHP development community. By combining PHP with a Groovy and Java-based runtime environment, developers can compose applications and services that draw upon assets from both the Java and PHP communities. IBM Business Partners and clients can use the best of both worlds. WebSphere sMash V1.1.0 enhances sMash PHP support, including performance improvements, additional PHP functions supported, and support for additional PHP scripts.
- WebSphere sMash also features easy-to-build RESTful applications. Application programming interfaces are optimized for producing REST-style services, iWidgets for mashups, and rich Web interfaces.
Simplified deployment of applications:
- The lightweight foundation of WebSphere sMash is based on a "run and done" model in which the application acts as the server. WebSphere sMash allows developers to rapidly create and assemble services, data sources, and application functions and deploy with greater agility.
- WebSphere sMash V1.1.0 applications can be more easily deployed within Microsoft® IT environments with added support for Microsoft Windows 2008, Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Active Directory, and better accessibility to data that resides in Microsoft data sources such as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and SQL Server 2005.
- Another feature of this solution is its API for connections. This interface allows applications to connect to other resources through a number of protocols, including Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) or HTTPS, Java Message Service (JMS), and file (s/FTP client) and e-mail (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)), Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) client).
Increased client satisfaction and line-of-business productivity by streamlining user interaction with Web-based applications:
- WebSphere sMash supports Web 2.0 architectures and protocols, including REST and Atom for the service invocation model, JSON and XML for the data interchange format, and Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX) for the rich client model.
- This solution also features a supported AJAX development toolkit (Dojo Toolkit) for enablement of rich user experiences without requiring additional browser plug-ins. WebSphere sMash provides a visual editor for user interface (UI) design in which you can drag and drop Dojo artifacts.
- Data access is provided through a layer of abstraction between the actual data store and REST. Inline structured query language (SQL) capabilities come directly from scripts, allowing straight SQL while simplifying common query patterns.
- And when it comes to security, WebSphere sMash has capabilities for authentication and for authorization by users, groups, and roles, as well as support for OpenID. Active Content Filtering (ACF) allows for validation of inbound request parameters, in addition to inbound and outbound JSON messages, to detect and remove malicious active content such as JavaScript.
- Access to a growing online development community.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)
Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology, defined within the PVU Table by Processor Vendor, Brand, Type and Model Number at
and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The Licensee can deploy the program using either Full Capacity licensing or Virtualization Capacity (Sub-Capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to Web site below). If using Full Capacity licensing, the Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores1 in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, the Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at
1 An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.
Client device
Client device is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A client device is a computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from another computer system that is typically referred to as a server or is otherwise managed by the server. Multiple client devices may share access to a common server. A client device generally has some processing capability or is programmable to allow a user to do work. Examples include, but are not limited to appliances, automated teller machines, cash registers, disk drive, desktop computers, kiosks, notebook computers, personal digital assistant, point-of-sale terminals, tape drive, and technical workstations. Licensee must obtain entitlements for every client device which runs, uses services provided by, or otherwise accesses the program and for every other computer or server on which the program is installed.
