Bottom rule

IBM® XIV Storage System Software V10.2 improves upon previous software versions by offering support for asynchronous mirroring, as well as support for an instant space reclamation capability.

Non-disruptive code load is also supported. This became available in IBM XIV Storage System Software V10.1 which was released earlier this year.

For ordering, contact your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: YE001).

Overview
Bottom rule

IBM XIV Storage System Software V10.2 is now available with support for asynchronous mirroring, as well as support for an instant space reclamation capability.

Additionally, non-disruptive code load is also supported. This became available in IBM XIV Storage System Software V10.1 which was released earlier this year.

The XIV asynchronous mirroring function enables data replication over extended distances between two sites. Asynchronous mirroring complements the XIV synchronous mirroring function which was already available. Both provide solutions for business continuity and disaster recovery.

A new instant space capability enhances the existing XIV Thin Provisioning space reclamation capability. The new capability is designed to enable XIV users to optimize capacity utilization, thus saving costs, by allowing supporting applications, such as Symantec's Veritas Storage Foundation product, to instantly regain unused file system space in thin-provisioned XIV volumes.

Non-disruptive code load is designed to enable you to update the system software from V10.1 to follow-on versions without necessitating storage system downtime or outages to host-based applications.

IBM XIV Storage System Software V10.2 also continues to support the same functionality previously included in IBM XIV Storage System Software V10.0 and uses the same product ID (5639-XXA).

Description
Bottom rule

IBM XIV Storage System Software V10.2 supports all of the functions and interoperability announced to date for V10.1 of the IBM XIV Storage System. XIV Software V10.2 uses the same product ID as V10.1, and also has the same hardware requirements.

V10.2 now supports asynchronous mirroring as well as non-disruptive code load.

Asynchronous mirroring

Asynchronous mirroring is the volume or consistency group synchronization attained through a periodical, recurring activity that takes a snapshot of a designated source and updates a designated target with differences between that snapshot and the last replicated version of the source. Unlike other implementations, XIV asynchronous mirroring supports multiple consistency groups with different recovery point objectives. XIV asynchronous mirroring supports multiple targets, 512 mirrored pairs, scheduling, event reporting, and statistics collection.

Non-disruptive code load

Non-disruptive code load is designed to support upgrades from the XIV Storage System Software V10.1 to future versions of the software without disrupting application service. Firmware upgrades (that is, motherboard and HBA firmware) are not a part of this functionality, but can be handled in a module-by-module fashion.

ATS monitoring

With the XIV Storage System Software V10.2 and the ATS monitoring cables provided by XIV hardware feature numbers 9890, 9891, 9892, and 9893, it is possible to monitor the ATS status and functionality natively through the XIV GUI.

Support for Symantec Thin Reclamation

XIV Storage System Software V10.2 now supports the Thin Provisioning Space Reclamation feature in Veritas Storage Foundation. This feature allows you to trigger online reclamation of unused space in thin-provisioned XIV volumes, enabling more efficient space allocation.

For available XIV Storage System connectivity, capacity, and data protection features, refer to Hardware Announcement 108-540, dated August 12, 2008.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

IBM XIV Storage System Software is the disk system operating software for the 2810-A14 or 2812-A14 IBM XIV Storage System. This software provides the functional capabilities of the XIV system. The combination of hardware and software is designed to provide a revolutionary, grid-based architecture that is exceptionally easy to use, with high performance. This offers a scalable, reliable enterprise disk system for UNIX®, Linux®, Microsoft® Windows®, and other supported distributed open server platforms. It can provide a platform to address the need for minimizing complexity while keeping pace with midsize to high-end disk capacity demands. This system is a great addition to the IBM disk storage family core products in the IBM information infrastructure. It is a good fit for clients who want to be able to grow capacity without managing multiple tiers of storage to improve performance and reduce cost. These clients may also want to improve their backup capabilities, as well as reduce the task load on storage administrators. The XIV system is especially well suited as a consolidated utility storage for fast growing, dynamic mixed and emerging workloads.

Each Proof of Entitlement for the Program authorizes You to use a single version of a Program component. You are not authorized to use multiple versions of the same Program component under the same Proof of Entitlement, even if multiple versions of a component are included on the media for the Program.

SOURCE CODE: Some of the components of the Program may be provided in source code form. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in this Agreement, support is only provided for the unmodified, binary code versions of these components included in the Program packaging, and not for the source code for these components or for any modifications of such components You may create.

TRANSFERABILITY: The Program is non-transferable between IBM XIV Storage Systems and is only to be used on the IBM XIV Storage System for which it was purchased. If the system is transferred to a new owner, the program license transfers with the system.

For additional information, refer to the License Information document that is available on the IBM Software License Agreement Web site

http://www.ibm.com/software/sla/sladb.nsf
Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) applies

Yes. All distributed software licenses include Software Maintenance (Software Subscription and Technical Support) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.

While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short-duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at

http://techsupport.services.ibm.com/guides/handbook.html

Software Maintenance does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
