Overview
Bottom rule

IBM solidDB V6.5, a relational in-memory database, can deliver extreme speed by performing up to ten times faster than conventional disk-based databases. It uses the familiar SQL language and enables applications to potentially achieve tens-to-hundreds of thousands of transactions per second with response times measured in microseconds.

solidDB V6.5 introduces major enhancements including shared memory access, distributed transaction support for two-phase commit, and improved multilanguage support with unicode. These and other enhancements are described in the Description section.

IBM solidDB can also help achieve extreme availability by recovering from system failures in less than a second. Using a two-node, hot-standby configuration, solidDB maintains copies of the data synchronized between two solidDB nodes.

The extreme speed and extreme availability of IBM solidDB, as compared to conventional disk-based databases, is designed to enable businesses to keep data available and accessible. Greater availability can help lower the costs associated with both planned and unplanned outages and delays. solidDB can further help reduce costs because it can be controlled by the application and run virtually unattended. Unattended database operation accelerates deployments and can help to reduce administrative costs. Furthermore, because solidDB runs on commodity as well as best-of-breed hardware, businesses can select from the most suitable solutions for their business need.

Description

Key enhancements in IBM solidDB V6.5

  • Shared memory access
SolidDB V6.5 is now designed to further increase performance and reduce response times by linking multiple applications to a dynamic library comprised of the full solidDB server code. The applications access the common memory-resident data via a shared memory segment. This shared memory access allows multiple applications to share a single solidDB instance. Additionally, multiple, concurrent instances of solidDB may exist on the same system.
  • Distributed transaction support
solidDB V6.5 supports distributed transaction processing, through two-phase commit, via the Java™ Transaction API (JTA) interface. This enhancement lets solidDB V6.5 be fully interoperable with leading application servers, such as IBM WebSphere® Application Server, since they manage complex applications requiring multiple data sources.
  • Improved multilanguage support
solidDB V6.5 supports unicode, providing the capability to encode characters used in the major languages of the world allowing more flexible application development environments. Further, multiple applications can use different character encoding when connecting to the same instance of solidDB V6.5.
  • New audit trail capability
Satisfying the increasing requirement for IT auditability across various industries, solidDB V6.5 provides a new audit trail capability to be able to track user and schema changes persistently within the database.
  • New transaction log reader
solidDB V6.5 features a new SQL-based programming interface for reading solidDB transaction log files, allowing application developers the ability to develop custom-made solutions for replication, backup, and data integration. The interface may be used both over the network and with shared memory access.
  • Performance and usability enhancements
Numerous enhancements in solidDB V6.5 improve processing performance and usability. Enhancements include foreign key rollbacks, log writer concurrency, multithread database restores, checkpointing, and additional SQL statement support.

Memory requirements

The amount of memory required for the solidDB JDBC and ODBC clients depends on the operating system and the database applications that are running. In most cases, it should be sufficient to use the minimum memory requirements of the operating system as the minimum requirement for running the solidDB JDBC and ODBC clients.

The amount of memory required for the solidDB connector depends on the operating system and the database applications that are running. In most cases, it should be sufficient to use the minimum memory requirements for DB2® Linux, UNIX®, and Windows, or IDS as the minimum requirement for running the solidDB connector.

The amount of memory required for the solidDB in memory engine depends on the operating system and the database applications that are running. Memory requirements will primarily depend on the size of the database.

Disk space requirements

The minimum disk space is 10 MB for a typical installation. The actual space required will vary depending on the logging parameters selected, use of the on disk engine, and the size of the database stored on disk.

Charge metrics definitions

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which this software product can be licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor technology (defined within the PVU table* by processor vendor, brand, type and model number). IBM continues to define a processor, for purposes of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. Each software product has a unique price per PVU. To determine the total cost of deploying an individual software product in a specific hardware environment, you must take the following steps:

  1. For each processor core in the hardware environment on which the software product is to be licensed, determine the PVU requirement based on its processor technology per the PVU table*.
  2. Add the PVU requirements for all processor cores in the hardware environment.
  3. Multiply the software product's price per PVU by the total number of PVUs required as determined in step 2 above.

PVU entitlements are specific to a software product and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another software product.

Unless you have deployed eligible sub-capacity products according to the sub-capacity* terms, you must obtain PVU Proof of Entitlements (PoEs) for the maximum number of activated** physical processor cores in the hardware environment made available to or managed by the software product. This is also referred to as full capacity licensing.

* For information regarding PVU and sub-capacity licensing, including the latest PVU table, visit

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

** Activated processor cores are physical processor cores that are available for use in a server. They include processor cores:

  • That are activated (available for use) when the server is shipped by the manufacturer
  • That are activated subsequently through activation codes purchased from the server manufacturer by the customer
  • Whose capacity can be limited by the customer through virtualization technologies, operating system commands and BIOS settings

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
