Overview
Bottom rule

IBM solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 features relational, in-memory database software designed to accelerate industry-leading relational databases, such as IBM DB2® and Informix®, Oracle, Microsoft® SQL Server, and Sybase, increasing their performance up to ten times. It uses the familiar SQL language and is designed to enable applications to achieve tens to hundreds of thousands of transactions per second with response times measured in microseconds.

solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 introduces major enhancements including shared memory access, flexible and configurable data aging, and dynamic and flexible SQL pass-through. These and other enhancements are described in the Description section.

solidDB Universal Cache integrates with relational, disk-based databases to accelerate access to their data. This acceleration can be particularly valuable for performance-critical data frequently accessed by many concurrent users, typical of applications such as ticketing and reservation systems, e-commerce applications, event processing and alerting, online gaming, and software as a service (SaaS) application platforms. Additionally, data from leading disk-based, relational databases can be cached into solidDB Universal Cache to help support peak workloads experienced by such applications as customer service and stock trading.

solidDB Universal Cache is also highly adaptable, with the ability to deploy as a read-only cache or as a read-write cache, to meet a wide variety of different application and deployment needs. It provides additional flexibility with powerful schema mapping and data transformation capabilities to move data between solidDB Universal Cache and the back-end database.

To provide further deployment adaptability, solidDB Universal Cache delivers both vertical and horizontal scalability. In addition to leveraging multicore and multiprocessor environments, it also provides different configurations to scale out in-memory cache processing across multiple servers. For example, different cache instances can be configured to maintain identical copies of the same data, to facilitate load balancing, for read or read-write access. Alternatively, large tables in the back-end database can be partitioned, where each data partition can be hosted by a dedicated in-memory cache instance, for read or read-write access.

While providing data access with extreme speed, solidDB Universal Cache is designed not to sacrifice data durability. Data is persisted to disk using checkpointing and transaction logging. Further, solidDB Universal Cache is designed to offer high availability and instant failover from one cache instance to another, if deployed in a two-node, hot-standby configuration. In this configuration, two copies of the data are kept synchronized between the two cache instances at all times, which can help applications failover between the cache instances in less than a second in case of system failure.

The extreme speed and high availability of solidDB Universal Cache, as compared to conventional disk-based databases, is designed to enable businesses to keep data available and accessible. Greater availability can help lower the costs associated with both planned and unplanned outages and delays. Furthermore, because solidDB Universal Cache runs on commodity as well as best-of-breed hardware, businesses can select from the most suitable solutions for their business needs.

Description
Bottom rule

IBM solidDB Universal Cache features relational, in-memory database software to accelerate industry-leading relational databases, such as IBM DB2 and Informix, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and Sybase, increasing their performance up to ten times. It uses the familiar SQL language and enables applications to achieve tens to hundreds of thousands of transactions per second with response times measured in microseconds.

By combining the relational in-memory data management capabilities of IBM solidDB Universal Cache with the versatility of disk-based databases, applications benefit from the best of both worlds.

Major enhancements in IBM solidDB Universal Cache V6.5

  • Flexible and configurable data aging
The purpose of data aging is to allow an application to remove, or age, outdated or otherwise obsolete data from solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 while still preserving it in the back-end, disk-based database. This optimizes the amount of memory allocated to solidDB Universal Cache and ensures that the data closest to the application is also the most relevant and active. solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 provides full control of the aging of data to the application layer. The application can perform data aging through simple SQL statements specifying which data to remove from the solidDB Universal Cache tables. The application can specify the aging to occur at a transaction level or at a session level. Also, data aging can run automatically as solidDB Universal Cache continues bi-directional replication with a back-end database, ensuring that data removed from solidDB Universal Cache is not replicated back into the cache from the back-end database.
  • Dynamic and flexible SQL pass-through
solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 reduces overall development costs with simplified and improved deployment flexibility by allowing applications to access both cached and non-cached data, negating the need to maintain an explicit connection to the back-end database. This pass-through feature checks if the SQL statement can be handled locally by the cached tables in solidDB Universal Cache or if it must be redirected to the back-end database. The SQL pass-through capability of solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 can be enabled at a session or a transaction level and can be changed dynamically at runtime, thus allowing the application a wide degree of flexibility and greater level of control.
  • Shared memory access
With solidDB Universal Cache V6.5, it is now possible to increase performance and reduce response times by linking multiple applications to a dynamic library comprised of the full solidDB server code. The applications access the common memory-resident data via a shared memory segment. This shared memory access allows multiple applications to share a single solidDB instance. Additionally, multiple, concurrent instances of solidDB may exist on the same system.
  • Distributed transaction support
solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 supports distributed transaction processing, through two-phase commit, via the Java™ Transaction API (JTA) interface. This enhancement lets solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 be fully interoperable with leading application servers, such as IBM WebSphere® Application Server, as they manage complex applications requiring multiple data sources.
  • Improved multilanguage support
solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 supports unicode, providing the capability to encode characters used in the major languages of the world allowing more flexible application development environments. Further, multiple applications can use different character encoding when connecting to the same instance of solidDB Universal Cache V6.5.
  • New audit trail capability
Satisfying the increasing requirement for IT auditability across various industries, solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 provides a new audit trail capability to be able to track user and schema changes persistently within the database.
  • New transaction log reader
solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 features a new SQL-based programming interface for reading solidDB transaction log files, allowing application developers the ability to develop custom-made solutions for replication, backup, and data integration. The interface may be used both over the network and with shared memory access.
  • Performance and usability enhancements
Numerous enhancements in solidDB Universal Cache V6.5 improve processing performance and usability. Enhancements include foreign key rollbacks, log writer concurrency, multithread database restores, checkpointing, and additional SQL statement support.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which this software product can be licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor technology (defined within the PVU table* by processor vendor, brand, type and model number). IBM continues to define a processor, for purposes of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. Each software product has a unique price per PVU. To determine the total cost of deploying an individual software product in a specific hardware environment, you must take the following steps:

  1. For each processor core in the hardware environment on which the software product is to be licensed, determine the PVU requirement based on its processor technology per the PVU table*.
  2. Add the PVU requirements for all processor cores in the hardware environment.
  3. Multiply the software product's price per PVU by the total number of PVUs required as determined in step 2 above.

PVU entitlements are specific to a software product and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another software product.

Unless you have deployed eligible sub-capacity products according to the sub-capacity* terms, you must obtain PVU Proof of Entitlements (PoEs) for the maximum number of activated** physical processor cores in the hardware environment made available to or managed by the software product. This is also referred to as full capacity licensing.

* For information regarding PVU and sub-capacity licensing, including the latest PVU table, please visit:

** Activated processor cores are physical processor cores that are available for use in a server. They include processor cores:

  • That are activated (available for use) when the server is shipped by the manufacturer
  • That are activated subsequently through activation codes purchased from the server manufacturer by the customer
  • Whose capacity can be limited by the customer through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, and BIOS settings.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
