Optim High Performance Unload is a solution for unloading, extracting, and repartitioning data with higher speed and less demand on system resources.

This newest release of Optim High Performance Unload enables you to unload from incremental image copies, in addition to the existing ability to unload from full backup images. This new feature provides the option to get a more current unload file by unloading from the incremental image copy.

For ordering, contact your IBM® representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: YE001).

Overview
Bottom rule

Designed to help maximize performance, ease use, and enhance flexibility, Optim High Performance Unload for DB2® for Linux®, UNIX®, and Windows® (LUW) offers high-speed unload and extract capabilities to move data more quickly and efficiently across enterprise systems. Organizations value Optim High Performance Unload for its ability to help:

  • Move large volumes of data with greater speed and accuracy, and with less effort
  • Accomplish more processing in less time and adapt to tight or shrinking batch windows
  • Promote faster unloads and extracts to enhance the value of new hardware and software
  • Eliminate the need for intermediate storage during database migrations
  • Recover a single table or tablespace from backup for restoration
  • As a new feature with Optim High Performance Unload V4.1.2, unload or restore using incremental backup images

Optim High Performance Unload provides the ability to choose the precise data to move to a target destination by using filters and unloading subsets of data.

To achieve high-speed and low system resources, Optim High Performance Unload reads directly from the tablespace file, rather than utilizing the database engine. To avoid contention with the production database or CPU resources on the production server, Optim High Performance Unload can extract data from full, offline backups, including incremental backups.

Optim High Performance Unload streamlines processes with capabilities for creating multiple output formats during a single unload process. For example, choose output to files, pipes, or other devices and support multiple output formats, including XML, delimited and undelimited ASCII, and DSNTIAUL -- all within a single unload process. To conserve on storage space, Optim High Performance Unload provides the capabilities needed to move data directly from one database to another, including unloading, transferring, and loading data between a source and target without requiring intermediate storage. This allows for more efficient data transfer, particularly when migrating data from one system to another.

With backup and recovery operations focusing on media failure or disaster recovery, sometimes accidental errors like a single table drop can create a real problem. Using Optim High Performance Unload, database administrators (DBAs) can unload a single table from a database backup and enable fast recovery. With Optim High Performance Unload V4.1.2, incremental copies can now be utilized in addition to the full image copies. These capabilities offer the data management team more flexibility in responding to a variety of outages.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

Optim High Performance Unload helps the DBA work with very large quantities of data with less effort and with faster results. With more applications requiring timely data access, processing through large volumes of data can increase costs for servicing these requests. Similarly, processes for extracting and moving large volumes of data become more complex and time consuming, making it difficult to complete unload processing in allocated batch windows.

To avoid negative consequences, unloads must often run concurrently in the production environment. Consequently, the method used to extract and move data can have a critical impact on the efficiency and uptime of the application and directly impact your ability to satisfy service level agreements (SLAs). Optim High Performance Unload is designed to reduce the elapsed and CPU time of unloading DB2 data, alleviating the impact unloads can have on the production system. Adding to the greater efficiency is the ability to choose the precise data to move to the target destination, further lowering the demand on system resources.

To further lower the impact on system resources, Optim High Performance Unload provides the ability to unload from backup images. With Optim High Performance Unload V4.1.2, unloading from backup images also includes incremental backup images, to provide a more current unload of the production database. By facilitating unloads from the backup images, the DBA can more easily recover an accidentally dropped table.

Upgrading systems and consolidating database instances are common practices to derive the most value from your application environment. With Optim High Performance Unload, simplified, faster upgrades and consolidations help support organizations' efforts to minimize the risk of business disruption.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which this software product can be licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor technology (defined within the PVU table1 by processor vendor, brand, type, and model number). IBM continues to define a processor, for purposes of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. Each software product has a unique price per PVU. To determine the total cost of deploying an individual software product in a specific hardware environment, you must take the following steps:

  1. For each processor core in the hardware environment on which the software product is to be licensed, determine the PVU requirement based on its processor technology per the PVU table1.
  2. Add the PVU requirements for all processor cores in the hardware environment.
  3. Multiply the software product's price per PVU by the total number of PVUs required as determined in step 2 above.

PVU entitlements are specific to a software product and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another software product.

Unless you have deployed eligible sub-capacity products according to the sub-capacity1 terms, you must obtain PVU Proof of Entitlements (PoEs) for the maximum number of activated2 physical processor cores in the hardware environment made available to or managed by the software product. This is also referred to as full capacity licensing.

1
For information regarding PVU and sub-capacity licensing, including the latest PVU table, visit
http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html
2
Activated processor cores are physical processor cores that are available for use in a server. They include processor cores:
  • That are activated (available for use) when the server is shipped by the manufacturer
  • That are activated subsequently through activation codes purchased from the server manufacturer by the customer
  • Whose capacity can be limited by the customer through Virtualization technologies, operating system commands, and BIOS settings.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
