Overview
Bottom rule

Optim Database Administrator is a solution designed to help prevent errors and data loss when upgrading databases to support new applications. An easy-to-use user interface helps make specifying the changes quicker and simpler, while the powerful and comprehensive change management engine analyzes the change and builds a syntactically correct script that takes into account data preservation, security privileges, and all dependent objects.

New and enhanced capabilities in Version 2.2.2 improve overall administrative tasks by supporting federated objects and providing the ability to produce scripts that can run with the DB2 CLP. Optim Database Administrator helps you:

  • Automate and script structural database changes
  • Perform extended alters that require dropping and re-creating tables and managing data preservation
  • Perform schema compare and synchronization with custom mapping features
  • Migrate database objects, data, and privileges and generate maintenance utility commands

Description
Bottom rule

Optim Database Administrator provides a simpler and more powerful solution for managing change in your DB2 environment. New enhancements build on the value that Optim Database Administrator already provides. These enhancements are designed for medium- to large-size DB2 customers that rely on DB2 Linux, UNIX, and Windows (LUW) for their mission-critical applications.

Federated databases provide interoperability to businesses that rely on multiple data servers, even if those data servers are heterogeneous. Through the use of wrappers and nicknames, the objects in remote data servers can be managed from a single data server, allowing for easier management and development. Optim Database Administrator now takes into account these federated objects and treats them as any other database object, allowing for create, alter, copy and paste, and other functions that are found within the solution.

As businesses grow, so does the amount of database objects required to support that business; and along with that growth comes the challenge of managing large volumes of objects. Optim Database Administrator has been enhanced to more rapidly display these large environments in the user interface, and the change management engine has been enhanced to provide quicker analysis.

As businesses rely more and more on their applications, any disruption during business hours is not acceptable. For this reason, many companies choose to implement change during off-peak hours, often in the middle of the night. Optim Database Administrator has been enhanced to provide the ability to generate DB2 CLP scripts. These scripts can be run independently of Optim Database Administrator and can be scheduled by using a third-party scheduler to facilitate off-hours, hands-free change management.

Businesses today rely more and more on the applications that power them -- making downtime due to version upgrades or even simple changes unacceptable. Business growth drives change, and as the application changes, so do the underlying database structures. Adding new and modifying existing objects is complex, labor-intensive, and prone to error. Even small changes can lead to application downtime when a dependency is forgotten or the data is not preserved during a change.

Managing change properly is critical to keep costs down. Making changes manually can be costly in terms of time and resources, and these costs can quickly skyrocket if integrity of the data or the application is compromised due to an application change. Businesses today need to:

  • Change production applications quickly to meet business needs
  • Manage multiple business-critical applications with fewer resources
  • Achieve maximum availability of business-critical applications
  • Ensure the integrity of the data for both internal- and external-facing applications

Optim Database Administrator V2.2 is an upgrade from Data Studio Administrator V2.1. Optim Database Administrator is a powerful database administration tool that provides an easy-to-use interface to perform everyday tasks such as object changes, utilities, commands, configuration changes, and granting or revoking of security privileges. Database administrators typically use Optim Database Administrator to automate the building of database administration scripts. Automated building of scripts can be initiated by indicating a set of changes through the GUI or by indicating a migration of a set of database objects from one server to another using a copy and paste function.

After these actions have been initiated, Optim Database Administrator does the hard work by handling data and dependency preservation along with providing a comparison mapping so that database changes will be built as intended. Automating these scripts not only helps save time, but can also help reduce errors inherent in this environment due to the complex set of dependencies often found in relational databases. Optim Database Administrator provides benefits by helping to:

  • Speed time to market by automating the complexity of database changes
  • Reduce resource cost by automating the time-consuming task of building change management scripts
  • Increase availability by streamlining the process required to change the application
  • Maintain integrity of the data and application with error-free scripts

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which this software product can be licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor technology (defined within the PVU table1 by processor vendor, brand, type, and model number). IBM continues to define a processor, for purposes of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. Each software product has a unique price per PVU. To determine the total cost of deploying an individual software product in a specific hardware environment, you must take the following steps:

  1. For each processor core in the hardware environment on which the software product is to be licensed, determine the PVU requirement based on its processor technology per the PVU table1.
  2. Add the PVU requirements for all processor cores in the hardware environment.
  3. Multiply the software product's price per PVU by the total number of PVUs required as determined in step 2 above.

PVU entitlements are specific to a software product and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another software product.

Unless you have deployed eligible sub-capacity products according to the sub-capacity1 terms, you must obtain PVU Proof of Entitlements (PoEs) for the maximum number of activated2 physical processor cores in the hardware environment made available to or managed by the software product. This is also referred to as full capacity licensing.

1
For information regarding PVU and sub-capacity licensing, including the latest PVU table, visit
http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html
2
Activated processor cores are physical processor cores that are available for use in a server. They include processor cores:
  • That are activated (available for use) when the server is shipped by the manufacturer
  • That are activated subsequently through activation codes purchased from the server manufacturer by the customer
  • Whose capacity can be limited by the customer through Virtualization technologies, operating system commands, and BIOS settings

Concurrent User

Concurrent User is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. A Concurrent User is a shared user access to the program within or outside of your enterprise. The program may be installed only on one computer or one server. The total number of Concurrent Users simultaneously accessing the program at any moment in time may not exceed the highest number of Concurrent Users authorized by the Proof of Entitlement (PoE). You must have an entitlement for each Concurrent User simultaneously accessing the program or any program component in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.

Authorized User

Authorized User is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. An Authorized User is an individual (named or unnamed) within or outside of your enterprise. The program may be installed on one or more computers or servers and accessed by the number of users authorized by the Proof of Entitlement (PoE). You must have an entitlement for each Authorized User accessing the program or any program component in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
