IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler (TWS) LoadLeveler for AIX V4.1 is a job management tool that is designed to allow users to run more jobs in less time by matching the jobs' processing needs with the available resources. TWS LoadLeveler for AIX schedules jobs and provides functions for building, submitting, and processing jobs quickly and efficiently in a dynamic environment.
Batch jobs can be submitted, either serial or parallel, to run in the background and require no input from the user. LoadLeveler scheduling algorithms use the availability of consumable resources to determine the machine or machines on which a job will run.
TWS LoadLeveler supports a rich set of configuration keywords. For sites using xCAT and LoadLeveler, LoadLeveler's configuration data can be stored in the same MySQL database that xCAT configures. An option is provided to check the validity of configuration data in files or databases. Among keyword and command enhancements is the capability for configuring groups of machines with common characteristics. After the configuration data specified by the administrator is read from the configuration files or database, it is stored in shared memory for quick access by LoadLeveler daemons and processes.
TWS LoadLeveler is packaged with separate install images for the resource manager and job scheduler. Each software package has its own set of externals such as commands and APIs. A user can have the option of installing just the LoadLeveler resource manager, which is also packaged with the Parallel Environment product, or installing both the LoadLeveler resource manager and scheduler, functions, as available in the LoadLeveler product today.
A well defined API is created and made available in the LoadLeveler resource manager, to allow a robust and efficient interaction with any scheduler.
In making use of this API, a third-party scheduling software can easily provide the scheduling functions to users, in a similar way as the LoadLeveler scheduler does, while taking advantage of the specific features provided in the LoadLeveler resource manager.
New daemons and new methods are provided to generate adapter discovery and to monitor node and adapter liveness. With this update, TWS LoadLeveler no longer uses Reliable Scalable Cluster Technology (RSCT) and Resource Monitoring and Control (RMC) to obtain the information -- it is generated and monitored by LoadLeveler.
Accessibility by people with disabilities
A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be requested at

TWS LoadLeveler provides an excellent framework for managing both serial and parallel batch workload in a single cluster as well as multicluster environments. AIX jobs can be submitted within the same LoadLeveler cluster or across multiple clusters on a grid. TWS LoadLeveler supports load balancing for interactive parallel operating environment sessions and provides various advanced job scheduling functions in a large-scale parallel computing environment.

To run parallel operating environment jobs, IBM Parallel Environment for AIX, V5.2 is required.
If using the database configuration option, Extreme Cloud Administrative Toolkit (xCAT) V2.3 with MySQL is required.
To use the parallel checkpoint and restart function, the following is required:
- APAR IZ59982
- IBM General Parallel File System for AIX, V3.2.1, or later
- IBM Parallel Environment for AIX, V5.2
Note: The supported node limit for parallel checkpoint restart is four nodes.
The program's specifications and specified operating environment information may be found in documentation accompanying the program, if available, such as a README file, or other information published by IBM, such as an announcement letter. Documentation and other program content may be supplied only in the English language.
IBM Parallel Environment for AIX provides a high-function parallel application development environment that can reduce the time and effort required to develop parallel applications. These parallel applications could then be run with LoadLeveler.
xCAT V2, an open source scalable distributed computing management and provisioning tool available from SourceForge, offers a unified interface for deploying and managing large systems. LoadLeveler shares the MySQL database configured by xCAT to store configuration data.
TWS LoadLeveler V4.1 cannot coexist in a mixed environment with previous versions. In order to migrate from a previous version, LoadLeveler must be rendered quiescent.
The checkpoint restart function will be available with APAR IZ59982 and is only available when running AIX V6.1 (TL 6100-04), or later. If serial checkpointing, or checkpoint and restart running AIX V5.3 is needed, you are required to remain on TWS LoadLeveler V3.5.
The supported node limit for checkpoint and restart is four nodes. For a list of other limitations, refer to the IBM Parallel Environment: MPI Programming Guide available from the IBM Cluster Information Center Web site.
TWS LoadLeveler V4.1 is the last release to support the AIX V5 operating system.

A processor (commonly called a CPU or core) is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. It is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes instructions. A processor consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic unit. With multicore technology, each core is considered a processor. A PoE must be obtained for the appropriate number of processors based on the level of all processor cores activated and available for use by the program on the server.
Some programs allow licensing to less than the full capacity of the servers activated processor cores, sometimes referred to as sub-capacity licensing. For programs which offer sub-capacity licensing, if a server is partitioned utilizing eligible partitioning technologies, then a PoE must be obtained for the appropriate number of processors based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition where the program runs or is managed by the program. Refer to the programs License Information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms. The entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with entitlements of another program.

Sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions
To be eligible for sub-capacity pricing, the machine on which the eligible products are installed and running must be eligible for sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions. Software pricing, at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, apply when running:
- AIX 5L V5.1, or later, on an IBM System p® 690 or equivalent partition-capable operating system and machine
- OS/400® V5R1, or later, running on an IBM System i®
- Linux® running in an LPAR under AIX 5L V5.1, OS/400 V5R1, or in a partition on an equivalent partition-capable operating system and server
Sub-capacity pricing for eligible products is based on the current program pricing methodology, but the number of processors will be determined based on the sum of processors for all partitions where the program is defined (used). To obtain pricing at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, you are required to:
- Install and use, when available, IBM's license use management program, which installs with eligible IBM programs.
- Install available updates to the operating system and eligible products such that license use can be accurately managed.
- Determine if the use of sub-capacity pricing terms results in a reduced requirement for entitlements; you can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing entitlements across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve them for future growth. There will be no refunds for these freed up entitlements. Subscription, Software Maintenance and support volumes, and entitlements for existing contracts will continue at the same levels as the acquired licenses.

|IBM Electronic Services|
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
