IBM Systems
Director VMControl System Pools V2.2 is a workload optimized approach to computing,
designed to drive down costs and improve service. A system pool is
a pool of virtualized system resources (servers, storage, network) that can
be managed as a single entity with the simplicity of managing a single system. IBM Systems
Director VMControl System Pools V2.2 provides the management of virtualized
workloads. This includes the ability to make dynamic virtual server adjustments
and move virtual servers around within system pools, providing efficiency
and increased resilience for planned and unplanned downtime. IBM Systems Director
VMControl System Pools V2.2 manages a pool of virtualized systems resources
with the simplicity of managing a single system.
IBM Systems
Director VMControl V2.2 extends the virtual server life cycle management and
image management capabilities introduced in IBM Systems Director VMControl V2.1 with
support for System Pools. IBM Systems Director VMControl encapsulates the complexity
of hardware and virtualization technology, and shifts management to a workload-centric
focus via virtual appliances. Virtual appliances are virtual machine
images containing the entire software stack (that is, operating system and
applications) for a business solution. Virtual appliances use the Open Virtualization
Format (OVF) for packaging, delivery, and deployment of preconfigured, ready-to-run
solutions, and they enable clients to more easily:
- Manage virtual servers and storage within the data center: It does this
by simplifying the configuration using industry best practices for virtualized
servers and storage, and by providing the means to address both single servers
and pools of virtualized systems in a consistent manner.
- Manage virtualized appliances within the data center: It does this by
providing the means to discover, organize, and catalog virtualized images
across heterogeneous image repositories; and by enabling the deployment, capture,
and customization of virtual appliances across IBM platforms.
- Manage running virtualized workloads: It provides for increased system
utilization, availability, and improved energy efficiencies through pooling
and automation. It enables workload resilience for planned and unplanned downtime.
In the data center, there is an emerging shift from managing virtualization
to using virtualization to manage. Historically, the IT industry has treated
virtualization and managing virtualization as a hardware task, and has focused
on the low-level controls within the hardware and virtualization technologies
to partition and allocate resources to virtual machines. The workload, image-centric
approach is designed to provide:
- A single, consistent solution for IBM systems
- Improved time-to-value for new solutions
- Automation for repeatable accuracy and consistency
- Higher utilization and efficiencies
- Ability to reduce energy costs
- Improved availability for business application workloads
- Support for an ecosystem around delivery of cloud services
The goal of platform management has evolved from the initial complexities
of managing scale-out sprawl to physical consolidation, then to realizing
abstraction and pooling through virtualization. The mantra of "virtualize
more, manage less" has evolved the platform from physical servers to virtual
servers to system pools.

IBM Systems
Director VMControl V2.2 provides management simplification, improves system
efficiencies within the data center, and leverages the flexibility and power
of virtualization for single systems and pools of cooperating systems. The
decoupling of the client's workload from the underlying systems and the dynamic
flexibility to move resources and virtual machines allows IBM Systems Director
VMControl System Pools to provide significant value in managing today's complex
and heterogeneous data centers.
System pools are a key building block for predictable, repeatable, and
integrated data center architectures. The client value of IBM Systems Director
System Pools includes:
- Simplification: System pools streamline best practices in standard, repeatable
configurations of virtualized servers, storage, and networks. System pools
use standard, pre-set components and behaviors to rapidly create easily managed,
customized configurations.
- Agility: System pools allow rapid deployment and elastic scaling. Self-describing
virtual appliances automate placement and allocation of virtual resources
to applications. System pools automatically move resources to the workloads,
when needed in real time.
- Resiliency: System pools use plug-and-play physical nodes that enable
near-zero downtime and disaster recovery. New resources can be integrated
and used nearly immediately.
- Efficiency: System pools balance energy use with application performance
by consolidating workloads and automatically turning off resources that are
not being used, and automatically bringing them back online when workload
demands them.
IBM Systems
Director VMControl 2.2 is a single package and plug-in for IBM Systems Director
with a tiered licensing structure including virtual server life cycle management,
image management, and system pools. New in this release is the support for
system pools.

a complete set of cross-platform virtual server life cycle and relocation
tasks. This includes the ability to create, edit, delete, and move virtual
servers from a single tool in a consistent fashion on all of the supported
hypervisors and IBM platforms.
The IBM Systems
Director VMControl Image Manager enables a complete set of image management
tools that builds upon the capabilities offered in the previous release with
additional tasks to delete virtual machine images (also known as virtual
appliances) as well as enhanced deployment options for Power Systems.
This release also adds support that will allow the client to deploy to and
capture images from system pools, providing efficient and dynamic placement
of the deployed workloads. Additionally, this release supports specifying
a workload running in a system pool needing to be highly available, which
will automatically be managed by the system pool.
The IBM Systems
Director VMControl System Pools enable the capabilities that allow POWER5 and POWER6 systems
to be pooled together, allowing the pool to be managed as a single logical
entity in the data center. As pools are created, new and existing client
workloads can be deployed, nondisruptively moved, dynamically placed, and
managed within the pool. Virtualized workloads are available with the system
pool. Workloads can be deployed as needed to be highly available. Approval
capabilities are added in this release so that the client can approve proposed
actions that the system pool deems necessary to keep in compliance with workload
availability.
IBM Systems

IBM's flexible and dynamic infrastructure offers a broad set of virtualization
technologies to help improve service and management, mask complexities, reduce
operational costs, and maximize asset utilization. IBM Systems Director VMControl System Pools
V2.2 further exemplifies the strategy for enabling management simplification
and automation with IBM Systems Director V6.1. Systems Director VMControl
System Pools V2.2 allows pools of systems in the data center to be managed
with single-system simplicity. Some of the key benefits provided by Systems
Director VMControl System Pools are:
- A simple interface and set of management tasks provided to manage the
life cycle and capacity of one or more system pools. Both new systems and
the remaining capacity of existing systems in the customer's data center can
be added and managed as part of a pool.
- System pool total aggregate capacity and utilization can be monitored
and viewed in the IBM Systems Director dashboard as a new special type
of system, eliminating the need to monitor the individual member systems.
- Open Standard OVF encoded images can be deployed and dynamically placed
on the most appropriate resources within the pool. Consideration for compatibility,
workload capacity, and workload resilience are all used to dynamically determine
the best placement, removing management complexity from the administrator.
- Storage can be assigned to and associated with a system pool, allowing
for dynamic provisioning and enablement for virtual server mobility operations.
- Running virtual machines can be moved between the member systems within
the pool with no disruption to the running workloads. Dynamic placement services
are leveraged to help determine the target system, considering compatibility,
workload capacity, and the workload resilience goals.
- Increased availability and resilience can be provided on a workload-by-workload
basis. When specified, Systems Director VMControl System Pools monitors the
individual member system for specific events that allow system failures to
be predicted and used to trigger the evacuation of the system.
- Automation of management actions are configurable, allowing for incremental
level of sophistication on a per workload basis. In all cases, the actions
that are automatically performed by Systems Director VMControl System Pools
are recorded within the IBM Systems Director Event Log.
IBM Systems
Director VMControl Image Manager V2.2, based on the Open Virtualization Format
(OVF) open standard from DMTF, helps enable a single unified view of all virtual
appliances and easy deployment of new virtual servers based on virtual appliances.
IBM Systems
Director VMControl Image Manager manages the life cycle of virtual appliances.
It captures information from active systems and stores the information in
reusable virtual appliances. IBM Systems Director VMControl Image Manager V2.2 also
allows the import of virtual appliances from external sources (such as a vendor's
Web site).
IBM Systems
Director VMControl Image Manager provides image management for Power Systems
and System
z®, specifically for AIX® images (leveraging NIM) and Linux® images
on System
z (leveraging z/VM®). For Power Systems clients, IBM Systems Director
VMControl Image Manager provides the ability to manage AIX mksysb images that can be deployed in
a virtualized Power Systems
environment. Clients that want to perform image management for a heterogeneous Power Systems, System
x®, or System
z environment will need to use a combination of Tivoli Provisioning Manager products
and IBM Systems

Server
Server is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. A server is
a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications
to one or more user or client devices. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be
obtained for each server regardless of the number of processor cores or partitions
in the server on which the program runs or each server managed by the program.
Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server.
IBM Systems
Director VMControl System Pools uses a per managed server charging metric.
A license is required for each server being managed by IBM Systems Director VMControl System Pools,
based on the size of the server. As of this announcement, servers are categorized
as small, medium, or large, based on the following categories:
- Small server
- IBM Power Systems, System
p® models in Processor Groups C5, D5, and E5
- IBM Power Systems, System
i® models in Processor Groups P05, P10, and P20
- IBM System
z models with 1-4 IFL engines
- Medium server
- IBM Power Systems, System
p models in Processor Group F5
- IBM Power Systems, System
i models in Processor Groups P30 and P40
- IBM System

For example, if a client is running IBM Systems Director VMControl System Pools
on a Power Systems
server to manage and deploy virtual appliances in a pool of servers including
a Power 570
server (Group F5 - medium server), a Power 595 server (Group H5 - large server),
a System
z server with four IFLs (small server), and a System z server with 10 IFLs (large
server), then the client needs to order one small, one medium, and two large
server licenses for this configuration.
Clients who require physical media may order media packs through the IBM configurator
ordering system, either directly or through their IBM representative or IBM Business Partner.
The IBM Systems
Director VMControl System Pools media pack may be ordered as part of a hardware
system order or as an independent software order for eligible customers.
IBM Systems
Director VMControl System Pools requires a keyfile to make the product operational
after the 60-day evaluation period. This keyfile is sent on a CD-ROM after
placing an order for the 5765-EMP product. Licenses for IBM Systems Director

All distributed software licenses include Software Subscription and Support

assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for
a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.
While your Software Maintenance is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine,
short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related

information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business
hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is

a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support
Handbook at

IBM has
transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help
you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled
solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the
service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed
to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem
resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate,
but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic
Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that
replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services
and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources
for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic
Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server.
It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic,
client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically
reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to
deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and
performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent
is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer
your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic
Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service
for your IBM server.
