HA Assist for i is a logical replication solution based on IBM i journaling technology that can be deployed in conjunction with PowerHA for i in those rare situations where certain objects (such as System/36™ objects) are neither supported via Independent Auxiliary Storage Pools or the Cluster Admin Domain. In these types of environments, HA Assist for i will be used to replicate those objects, thus enabling a configuration in which a failover or rollover operation can proceed. It will be the responsibility of the customer to ensure that those objects which are to be replicated via HA Assist for i are in fact in sync on the primary and secondary nodes in the PowerHA cluster.

HA Assist for i is primarily intended for larger enterprises familiar with logical replication solution environments. HA Assist is not a stand-alone HA product and requires two processor licenses of PowerHA on i (5761-HAS) as a prerequisite to ordering.

HA Assist for i (5733-HAA)

HA Assist for i may be used in conjunction with PowerHA for i in those rare circumstances where the customer has certain objects (such as System/36 objects) that are not supported in IASPs or via the Cluster Admin Domain.

HA Assist for i includes both a Java-based GUI administrator for configuring and monitoring the *SYSBASE objects being replicated remotely through a Windows-based PC or across the Web via a Web browser and WebSphere® as well as a green screen command- or menu-based interface to enable integration of HA functions into your existing batch routines.

HA Assist for i offers the following functions and benefits:

  • Synchronization checking of file attributes, file contents, Interactive File Sharing attributes, object existence, data area contents and output queues, monitoring through either green screen or easy-to-understand colored GUI interfaces, automatic resynchronization of out of sync objects and alarms/alerts, including e-mail notifications and user-defined thresholds.
  • High-speed scrape and apply replication capabilities that can scale to handle the size of the customer business and transactional volumes. This minimizes the time required for a switch and enables resynchronizations after network outages.
  • Replication to and from IASPs, to allow customers to quickly migrate to an IASP-based disk clustering solution to be used with Power® HA for i (5761-HAS) and either Geographical Mirroring or MetroMirror/GlobalMirror.

IBM HA Assist for i, when deployed in conjunction with IBM i 6.1 and IBM PowerHA for i (5761-HAS), lets customers replicate the small subset of objects not supported by either IASPs or the Cluster Admin Domain. The customer must be familiar with logical replication solution environments. Further, the customer must ensure that these objects which are not managed by the PowerHA cluster are, in fact, in sync between the primary and secondary nodes.

Customers with applications that have some subset of objects which are not supported in IASPs or the Cluster Admin Domain may be interested in HA Assist for i to replicate those objects to the secondary node in a PowerHA cluster.

Considerations for HA Assist for i: Large enterprise clients looking for a high availability or disaster recovery solution from IBM, who have acquired PowerHA and who have some subset of objects (such as System/36 objects) that are not supported via IASPs or Cluster Admin Domain. The client has IASP-enabled applications and is either using or has purchased PowerHA for i 5761-HAS. The client will purchase at least two licenses of HA Assist for i, one for the production node requiring protection and one for the backup node, and will configure replication for the specific objects in *SYSBASE.

Limitations and customer responsibility

HA Assist for IBM i is a logical replication technology that operates independently of the PowerHA on IBM i cluster solution. PowerHA on IBM i will automatically switch the data in the IASP from a primary node to a secondary node. The HA Assist does not inherently participate in that switching operation. It is therefore the responsibility of the customer to either conduct a manual switch of the HA Assist data or to create scripts that enable the switching operation to be automated via the cluster.

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for subscription and support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

All distributed software licenses include Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.

While your Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center.
