New temporary file system
IBM i 6.1 Integrated File System (IFS) is enhanced with support for a temporary file system. This new option can improve performance for applications that use temporary data in a file system. The files in a temporary file system are deleted by the system when the system is restarted or when the file system is unmounted. Because of this, these files do not require the extra disk operations that protect the non-temporary files stored in the existing file system. The temporary file system is a special type of user-defined file system (UDFS) and can be created, mounted, and then used much like a permanent UDFS. This support can be obtained with PTF SI34983.
Support for IBM i Network upgrade
IBM i can now be upgraded from an image on the network. An IBM i 6.1 environment on POWER6 processor-based server can be upgraded to IBM i 6.1.1 with an image on the network file server. See information APAR II14310 for PTF and setup information.
IBM i Performance Data Investigator enhancements
The Performance Data Investigator is a tool provided in IBM i 6.1 to analyze IBM i performance information captured with collection services. The tool is part of the Web-based Systems Director Navigator for i. Several enhancements have been made to the Performance Data Investigator, including graphical health indicators for system resources such as CPU, disk, and memory. The performance images can be exported to be used by presentation tools. The tool can also take the measured data from collection services and input it into the IBM Workload Estimator (WLE) for system sizing analysis. PTFs required to enable these enhancements are SI35659 and SI35663.
Apache PCI compliance
IBM i 5.4 and 6.1 have been updated to support Apache 2.0.63 and 2.2.11, respectively, providing compliance with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) standard. This support can be obtained through the latest levels of the IBM HTTP Server group PTF: IBM i 5.4 - SF99114, IBM i 6.1 - SF99115.
IBM License Metric Tool Enhanced
IBM provides a no-charge tool, called the IBM License Metric Tool , to help clients identify the IBM software that is installed on their systems.
Clients have used the License Metric Tool to help calculate the number of Processor Value Units (PVUs) used by IBM software purchased through Passport Advantage®. This tool simplifies tracking installed software and helps clients achieve and validate compliance with IBM software licenses.
IBM has enhanced the License Metric Tool V7.2 to include new support for IBM platform software that is licensed by processor cores instead of PVUs.
Software sold by processor cores includes platform software such as AIX® and IBM i operating systems, licensed program products, and platform management tools.
The initial support for core licensed software by the License Metric Tool will be limited to discovery and tracking installed software. It will not include the full audit report capability that is provided for software licensed by PVUs. In some cases, the core licensed software will require an update before the License Metric Tool can track the software.

Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
