IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) V5.1.0 has been designed to provide significant new capabilities to assist storage administrators in their responsibilities, enabling them to manage even broader and more complex storage infrastructures and to implement strategic disaster recovery plans. V5.1.0 delivers enhancements to SVC in the areas of Metro Mirror and Global Mirror, FlashCopy®, volume management, security, and system scalability through its 64-bit architecture.
SVC remote copy functions now provide the ability to establish partnerships with up to three additional clusters. A virtual disk may still be only in one Metro Mirror or Global Mirror relationship. In addition, the scalability of SVC remote copy solutions is expanded by enabling up to 8,192 concurrent remote copy relationships. These enhancements help provide storage administrators with greater flexibility in designing a disaster recovery solution.
Within a single cluster, the SVC FlashCopy function now provides the capability to use FlashCopy to copy data rapidily from the target to the source of an existing FlashCopy mapping without rebuilding or re-establishing the existing mapping. This function gives administrators flexibility to recover data if a problem occurs in the data center. Administrators can also leverage their use of this and other SVC FlashCopy functions with the new IBM Tivoli® Storage FlashCopy Manager.
The original SVC space-efficient VDisk function is augmented with the new capability of SVC's VDisk Mirroring to remove unused space (zeros) when creating a new VDisk copy. The original VDisk copy can subsequently be removed from operation to obtain the full space savings. This capability enables administrators to more easily recover disk space when migrating to space-efficient virtual disks.
In order to continue the focus on storage management and configuration cost control, SVC V5.1 provides the means to utilize a lower cost Ethernet network infrastructure for iSCSI host attached to the cluster. This support will be provided through the built-in Ethernet ports present on all 64-bit SVC hardware models (2145 Models 8F2, 8F4, 8G4, 8A4, and CF8).
SVC increases the flexibility of the storage it provisions by raising the supported VDisk size to 256 TBs. For improved service, up to six e-mail servers can now be enabled to receive event notification from the SVC cluster. SVC V5.1 also introduces message classification to enable the administrator to determine the appropriate action based on the message designation of error or warning.
SVC interoperability now supports additional storage products including the EMC CLARiiON CX4 models, IBM System Storage DS5020, HP StorageWorks MSA2000, Xiotech Emprise 5000, and Hitachi AMS 2100, 2300, and 2500. Interoperability is also available for Novell SUSE Linux® Enterprise Server 11.
SVC's reliability, availability, and serviceability (RAS) capabilities are updated in V5.1. As a complement to the existing SVC e-mail and SNMP trap notification facilities, SVC adds Syslog error event logging for administrators already using the Syslog protocole elsewhere in their environments. SVC V5.1 provides the Enterprise Single Sign-on client to interact with an authentication server such as an LDAP server, where login credentials and roles are centrally managed. Finally, SVC V5.1 augments the availability of the system by automating node recovery and reentry into a cluster following certain types of software faults.
SVC V5.1 is designed for substantially improved cluster performance when installed on the latest IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller 2145-CF8 Storage Engines. SVC also introduces unique software capabilities only available when running SVC V5 software on the 2145-CF8. First, the 2145-CF8 may optionally be ordered with the necessary adapter and up to four solid-state devices (SSDs) per storage engine. These devices must be configured using SVC VDisk Mirroring to provide redundancy and may be used like any other managed disk in the system. This enables storage administrators to migrate busy work loads to high performance SSDs for virtual disks running their most critical applications without interruption to host I/O. Next, when using space-efficient VDisks in an I/O group hosted by 2145-CF8 storage engines, SVC V5.1 will detect if all zeros are being written in a write request and will not allocate disk space for such requests. This ability helps reduce the disk space used for space-efficient virtual disks and reduce space utilization concerns when formatting virtual disks.
SAN Volume Controller V5.1 Entry Edition (5639-VW2) increases its scope by managing configurations of up to 250 disk drives. For more details on this new disk drive maximum and subsequent changes to the conversion path from Entry Edition to standard SVC software (5639-VC5), refer to the Description and Usage restriction sections. Existing SVC V4.3 functions and additional functions included in SVC V5.1 are generally available to customers ordering either 5639-VC5 or 5639-VW2.

Multiple Cluster Mirroring and 8192 Metro/Global Mirror relationships
Multiple Cluster Mirroring enables the SAN Volume Controller (SVC) cluster to have a remote copy relationship with more than one other cluster. Metro Mirror and Global Mirror relationships can now exist between four unique SVC clusters (for example A to B, A to D, B to C, B to D). Both Metro Mirror and Global Mirror are supported within the same overall configuration (for example, a VDisk in a remote copy relationship from cluster A to B may be Metro Mirror while another VDisk in a separate remote copy relationship from cluster A to D is Global Mirror). This adds the benefit of being able to copy from several remote sites to a single SVC cluster at a disaster recovery site, thus simplifying disaster recovery configurations. With Multiple Cluster Mirroring, while a cluster may have multiple relationships, a single VDisk can still only be in a relationship with one other VDisk. The amount of data that can be replicating using Metro Mirror or Global Mirror relationships is greatly increased in SVC V5.1 as the maximum number of relationships is increased to 8,192.
Multi-Target Reverse FlashCopy and Storage FlashCopy Manager
Multiple-Target Reverse FlashCopy enables FlashCopy targets to become restore points (sources) without breaking the FlashCopy relationship and without having to wait for the FlashCopy to complete. Users are able to set up more than one point in time for recovery from a system disruption. SVC V5.1 delivers Multiple-Target Reverse FlashCopy concurrently with the new IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager (Storage FlashCopy Manager) V2.1, which is designed to deliver high levels of data protection for business-critical IBM DB2®, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft® Exchange, and Microsoft SQL applications via integrated application snapshot backup and restore capabilities. With SVC, this is achieved by using the SVC FlashCopy functions to help create a high performance, low impact application data protection solution. For more about the Storage FlashCopy Manager V2.1, refer to the announcement listed in the Reference information section.
Reclaiming unused disk space using space-efficient VDisks and VDisk Mirroring
SVC V5.1 enables the reclamation of unused allocated disk space when converting a fully allocated VDisk to a space-efficient virtual disk (SEV) using VDisk Mirroring. In order to migrate from a fully-allocated VDisk to space-efficient VDisk, add the target space-efficient copy, wait for synchronization to complete, then remove the source fully-allocated copy. This can be accomplished concurrently with I/O to the SVC. With this migration enhancement, managed disk space can more easily be freed up to make better use of available storage. Migration is accomplished without needing to purchase any additional function on SVC because VDisk Mirroring and space-efficient VDisk functions are included in the base virtualization license. If thin-provisioned storage is present on an existing storage system administrators, can potentially migrate their data into SVC management and take advantage of the space efficient function within SVC.
Authentication Client for single sign-on
Single sign-on capabilities help increase operator productivity by reducing the number of passwords required to operate multiple components. SVC V5.1 will let the client sign into SVC (UI, SMI-S) using the enterprise authentication service. This provides single sign-on support for devices and management applications that integrate with the enterprise authentication service, including Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) authentication. This capability is optional and existing authentication methods for the SVC are not replaced.
iSCSI host attached
Administrators will be able to make use of Ethernet-based IP networks for hosts to access SVC manage SAN storage. SVC V5 will deliver native support of network-attached hosts using the iSCSI protocol, using one or both Ethernet ports on each SVC 2145 node. SVC will still need to be configured within a Fibre Channel SAN to support internode communication and connection to the disk storage.
New capabilities with 2145-CF8 hardware engine
SVC improves its performance capabilities going forward by upgrading to a 64-bit software kernel. This allows SVC V5.1 to take advantage of cache increases such as 24 GB cache provided in the new 2145-CF8. SVC V5.1 will run on all SVC 2145 models that use 64-bit hardware, which includes Models 8F2, 8F4, 8A4, 8G4, and CF8. You cannot upgrade the original SVC 32-bit hardware model, 2145-4F2, to the SVC V5.1 level of software. Refer to the Limitations for more details.
With the option to use 8 Gbps LW SFPs in the SVC 2145-CF8, SVC V5.1 introduces the ability to split a SVC I/O group across long distances. Careful attention should be paid to the LW SFP hardware you use in the SVC 2145 to confirm it matches the supported LW SFPs, and that your SAN meets documented requirements before implementing such a configuration. Beginning with the 2145-CF8 hardware engine, when using space-efficient VDisks in an I/O group hosted by 2145-CF8 engines, customers will benefit from SVC V5.1 detecting if all zeros are being written in a write request as the SVC will not allocate disk space for such requests. This function is only available on the 2145-CF8 hardware engine with SVC V5.1 software.
256 TB VDisk size
SVC V5.1 provides administrators greater flexibility in expanding provisioned storage by increasing the allowable size of VDisks to 256 TB (an increase from the former 2 TB limit).
RAS enhancements
SAN Volume Controller's RAS capabilities are further enhanced in V5.1. Administrators will benefit from better SVC availability and serviceability through automatic recovery of node metadata, error notification via Syslog, improved error notification filtering (across e-mail, Syslog, SMNP filtering applies to all), support for up to six e-mail servers, and increased options for management of the cluster's quorum disk. Using prior versions of SVC, when a node is powered down inadvertently without saving its current state (error code 578), the node restarts but it does not rejoin the cluster without administrator action. In SVC V5.1, auto-recovery of the node's metadata, where appropriate, restores the node to the cluster after the 578 error without administrator action. As a complement to the existing SVC e-mail and SNMP trap facilities, SVC V5.1 adds Syslog error event notification. This enables optional transmission over the Syslog interface to a remote Syslog daemon when parsing the Error Event Log. Syslog uses the same message content and format as is transmitted for SNMP trap notification. Additionally, SMNP, Syslog, and e-mail filtering capabilities are added to assist your storage administrators in managing messages from SVC clusters, and messaging reliability is improved with support for up to six e-mail servers. SVC V5.1 gives greater flexibility to the data administrator by allowing more storage disk systems to host the cluster's quorum disk.

Embedded CIMOM
The SVC V5.1 Console (GUI) had been streamlined to use the CIMOM (CIM Agent), which is resident on the SVC nodes in V4.3.1, or later. Therefore, the external CIM Agent is no longer provided as a separate software component.
SVC Entry Edition 250 drive maximum
The SVC Entry Edition uses a per-disk-drive charge unit, and now may be used for storage configurations of up to 250 disk drives.
As announced previously, Entry Edition FlashCopy and Metro/Global Mirror functions are ordered in quantities that equal the number of disk storage drives to be managed by SVC Entry Edition software, now up to 250 drives. The quantity of drives ordered for these functions must match the Base Virtualization drive quantity ordered. When adding more drives to an existing cluster licensed with Entry Edition (5639-VW2), additional authorizations for Base Virtualization and for any other licensed functions (such as FlashCopy) must be ordered, so that license authorizations for all functions in use remain matched with the drive quantity being managed by SVC.
The System Storage SAN Volume Controller manages the Logical Unit Numbers (LUNs) of the attached disk subsystem. When calculating price based on the per-disk drive metric, count the drives associated with the LUNs managed by SVC. The count should contain all drives managed by SVC including LUNs that are striped across multiple disk drives such as in RAID configurations. Backup disk drives that are not actively running I/O operations until another disk drive fails (frequently referred to as "hot spares") need not be included in the disk drive count.
Metro/Global Mirror configurations with target volumes on a separate cluster must have corresponding authorizations for Metro/Global Mirror on the target cluster. The clusters in the Metro/Global Mirror relationship may be running any combination of the 5639-VW2 (per-disk drive) and the 5639-VC5 (per-terabyte) Metro/Global Mirror authorizations at the source and target clusters, and the size or quantity of those licenses do not necessarily need to match. For example, you may remotely copy volumes from a 5639-VW2 cluster with 250 drives that is Metro/Global Mirror authorized to an authorized cluster licensed for 108 drives, or you may remotely copy them to an authorized cluster that has Metro/Global Mirror authorizations available for the corresponding capacity of those volumes.
Conversion from 5639-VW2 to 5639-VC5 software licenses
The change to a maximum of 250 drives allowed by the 5639-VW2 license has created new conversion points as outlined below.
For customers who purchase SAN Volume Controller Entry Edition (5639-VW2), and who later need to increase their managed storage to greater than the maximum number of managed drives allowed by the 5639-VW2 license, IBM offers a conversion path to SVC 5639-VC5 (per-terabyte charge unit) software. When converting a SAN Volume Controller Entry Edition 5639-VW2 cluster with licenses that may include Base Virtualization, FlashCopy, and Metro/Global Mirror, all the authorizations pertaining to that cluster must be converted to the appropriate 5639-VC5 (per-terabyte) licenses.
Conversion is a three stage process. First, the existing license for 5639-VW2 must be upgraded to the maximum supported drives (that is, 250 drives) for Base Virtualization, and also FlashCopy and Metro/Global Mirror if those functions are licensed.
Next, the SVC license entitlement will be moved from SVC Entry Edition (5639-VW2) to a predetermined capacity amount in 5639-VC5 per TB pricing. For Base Virtualization, the entitlement is 71 TB; if licensed, for Metro/Global Mirror the entitlement is 14 TB. Entitlement for FlashCopy will not be moved to a predetermined capacity amount in 5639-VC5 except in cases where a monetary amount was paid for that SVC Entry Edition FlashCopy entitlement. As with the calculation used to determine the entitlements for Base Virtualization and Metro/Global Mirror that are provided, the FlashCopy entitlement will be calculated based on the actual amount paid for SVC Entry Edition FlashCopy and will not exceed the capacity of 13 TB.
Finally, the new 5639-VC5 license may be upgraded further to meet the customer's requirements.
For example, a customer has SVC Entry Edition (5639-VW2) licensed for 220 drives of Base Virtualization and Metro/Global Mirror. They want to expand their overall SVC capacity to 90 TB of Base Virtualization and 30 TB of Metro/Global. First, the customer would purchase quantity 30 of the SVC Entry Edition Base Virtualization per Disk Drive license and quantity 30 of the SVC Entry Edition Metro/Global Mirror per Disk Drive license to increase both to the maximum 250 drives, which is the conversion point. The conversion to SVC per-terabyte licensing would entitle the customer to 71 TB of Base Virtualization capacity and 14 TB of Metro/Global Mirror capacity. Finally, the customer would purchase the additional 19 TB of SVC Base Virtualization capacity starting with terabyte number 72 in tier four and the additional 16 TB of SVC Metro/Global Mirror capacity starting at terabyte number 15 in tier two.
There is no reverse path to convert from 5639-VC5 to 5639-VW2.

Hardware requirements
This program requires at least one pair of IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller 2145-CF8, 2145-8A4, 2145-8G4, 2145-8F4, or 2145-8F2 storage engines with dual uninterruptible power supplies, and a System Storage Productivity Center for installation.
All new SAN Volume Controller installations require the System Storage Productivity Center.

IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) software upgrade services
These services are designed to assist existing IBM SVC customers with planning, skills transfer, and upgrade of their IBM SAN Volume Controller cluster and master console software.
These services can include:
- Conducting a remote planning session to:
- Review SVC configuration information
- Determine current version of SVC software
- Review host, disk storage, SVC cluster, and master console code requirements and prerequisites
- Define roles and responsibilities, identify tasks, and schedule the SVC software upgrade

Limitations
This program operates on specified storage engine hardware only, currently defined by IBM 2145-CF8, 2145-8A4, 2145-8G4, 2145-8F4, and 2145-8F2 storage engines. Because SAN Volume Controller Software V5 requires 64-bit hardware, SVC V5 cannot run on the IBM 2145-4F2. Customers who want to migrate from currently installed 2145-4F2 models to the newer 2145-CF8 models that ship with SVC V5 software, will need to follow specific migration instructions, which will be generally available on or before December 18, 2009.

Customer responsibilities
Planning for and provision of the power and environmental support of the required IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller, including its storage engines, is a customer responsibility.

Service support for the IBM System Storage Productivity Center and its operating system, on which the SVC Console software runs, is a customer responsibility (and is separately ordered).
Customers with 5639-VC5 site licenses are responsible to combine the total terabytes managed for each function from individual SAN Volume Controller License Manager (cluster) reports, to ensure they are within site license entitlement for each function.
Customers with 5639-VW2 licenses are responsible to combine the total disk drives managed for each function from SAN Volume Controller License Manager (cluster) reports, to ensure they are within Entry Edition license entitlement for each function.
Installability
Clusters with SAN Volume Controller Storage Software V4.3.1.x can be converted to IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Software V5 via a concurrent codeload operation.
Customers running SAN Volume Controller V1 and V2 clusters must first acquire and install the SAN Volume Controller V3 code to enable installation of V4. V4.3.1 is prerequisite to performing a concurrent code load to SVC V5.
Note: Clusters with earlier versions of SAN Volume Controller Storage Software priced per terabyte (for example, 5639-VC4) cannot be converted to IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Entry Edition (5639-VW2). A new product purchase is necessary.

Software Maintenance is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express, as well as through AAS. Product upgrades and technical support are provided by the Software Maintenance offering as described in the Agreements. Product upgrades provide the latest versions and releases to entitled software, and Technical Support provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations, worldwide.
IBM includes one year of Software Maintenance with each program license acquired. The initial period of Software Maintenance can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.
The customer is responsible for ensuring they renew their SWMA coverage for all licensed features and capacities before expiration. Restarting SWMA after expiration will incur a higher charge for that renewal. Note that the AAS ordering system does not provide notification of expiring SWMA contracts. The Passport Advantage system does provide automated renewal capability for SWMA.
Packaging
New order packaging
IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Sotfware V5 (5639-VC5 and 5639-VW2) is preloaded on and shipped with the required IBM 2145 SAN Volume Controller Storage Engines.
License Information documents for SAN Volume Controller programs ship with the hardware on which they are preloaded. Preload feature number 5005 must be specified on all new orders of 5639-VC5 or 5639-VW2 and ordered in conjunction with IBM 2145-CF8, 2145-8G4, or 2145-8A4 hardware orders with hardware feature number 3001.

Subsequent media orders
Publications for SVC V5 storage software can also be included when additional Base Virtualization capacity authorizations, FlashCopy, or Metro/Global Mirror features are ordered subsequently to the original cluster software order, by specifying feature number 6183 of the 5639-VC5, or feature number 6184 of the 5639-VW2.

Security, auditability, and control
The SAN Volume Controller Software V5 uses Secure Shell (SSH) and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocols to communicate between the SAN Volume Controller cluster and the System Storage Productivity Center (SSPC).
Use of supplementary antivirus software is recommended, but not required. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

For new cluster SAN Volume Controller Entry Edition software V5 orders made via AAS, first order the cluster 2145-8A4 hardware for the cluster, then order the SAN Volume Controller Software 5639-VW2 cluster software license.

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.
This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).
Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance
The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (GI19-0246) agreement applies for subscription and support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.
IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at
IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).
Money-back guarantee
If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

This program (5639-VC5) is licensed on a per-terabyte (with cumulative tiers) site-wide capacity basis. (Refer to the Ordering information section for information on charges for this program.) Users may only install this program on IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller 2145-CF8, 2145-8G4, 2145-8A4, 2145-8F4, and 2145-8F2 Storage Engines, or subsequent IBM replacements of these.
Customers are licensed to use this program only to manage storage capacity within a single site, and only for the amount of storage capacity within that site for which they have received proper authorization from IBM. Customers must obtain a separate license for any additional sites within which they want to use SAN Volume Controller Software V5 (5639-VC5) and obtain separate capacity authorizations for each such site. The 5639-VC5 site license subsumes and supersedes all individual 5639-VC1, 5639-VC2, 5639-VCT, 5639-VC3, and 5639-VC4 licenses previously in effect at that site.
A customer's right to use the IBM FlashCopy for SAN Volume Controller and Metro/Global Mirror for SAN Volume Controller features of this program is also limited to the amount of authorizations obtained from IBM. The authorizations for FlashCopy and for Metro/Global Mirror cannot exceed the total capacity authorization for the amount of managed storage on all clusters within the site. Use of FlashCopy features requires license authorizations for only the FlashCopy sources, not the targets.
Use of Metro/Global Mirror features requires license authorizations for both the Metro/Global Mirror source and target capacities in use. Use of the Metro/Global Mirror feature between clusters located in different sites requires separate authorization for each site.
This program is only supported for use with host servers, storage sub-systems, and SAN configurations identified by IBM as being supported for attachment to the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller. This program is provided together with code provided under separate license agreements, including, but not limited to, open source license agreements.
SVC Entry Edition software (5639-VW2)
This program (5639-VW2) is licensed on a per-disk drive basis, with a maximum of 250 managed disk drives allowed per SAN Volume Controller cluster. (Refer to the Ordering information section for information on charges for this program.) Users may only install this program on IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller 2145-8A4 Storage Engine, or subsequent IBM replacements of this.
The System Storage SAN Volume Controller manages the LUNs of the attached disk subsystem. When calculating price based on the per-disk drive metric, count the drives associated with the LUNs managed by SVC. The count should contain all drives managed by SVC including LUNs that are striped across multiple disk drives such as in RAID configurations. Backup disk drives that are not actively running I/O operations until another disk drive fails (frequently referred to as "hot spares") need not be included in the disk drive count.
Customers are licensed to use this program (5639-VW2) only to manage storage capacity within a single cluster, and only for the amount of storage capacity within that cluster for which they have received proper authorization from IBM. Customers must obtain a separate license for each cluster on which SAN Volume Controller Software Entry Edition V5 (5639-VW2) is installed.

Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) applies
Yes. Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance), is now included in the Passport Advantage Agreement. Installation and technical support for the products announced in this announcement is provided by the Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) offering of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement. This fee service enhances customer productivity by providing voice or electronic access into the IBM support organizations.
IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option.
While your Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at
Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.
