Description
Bottom rule

The IBM z/OS Management Facility V1.11 (5655-S28) is a new product for z/OS that provides support for a modern, Web-browser-based management console for z/OS. The z/OS Management Facility is intended to enable system programmers to more easily manage and administer a mainframe system by simplifying day-to-day operations and administration of a z/OS system. More than just a graphical user interface, the z/OS Management Facility is intelligent, with designs toward addressing the needs of a diversified skilled workforce and maximizing their productivity. Automated tasks can help reduce the learning curve and improve productivity. In addition, embedded active user assistance (such as wizards) guides users through tasks and helps provide simplified operations. IBM z/OS Management Facility V1.11 (5655-S28) and IBM z/OS Management Facility Subscription and Support (5655-S29) are available at no charge.

This initial release of the z/OS Management Facility provides the foundation for platform simplification. Existing user interfaces such as ISPF, operator commands, and others will continue to be supported and coexist with the z/OS Management Facility.

Problem data management

When problems occur, the task of gathering diagnostic data to be sent to IBM or another vendor's support team can be very time-consuming. You need to reduce risk to the business and get to the root of the problem quickly.

The z/OS Management Facility Incident Log capability is intended to facilitate problem data management tasks for new or less-skilled system programmers and system administrators. It can also provide procedural advantages for the experienced system programmer by providing an event log summary and detailed view of z/OS incidents.

The initial focus of an incident is on abend and user-initiated SVC dumps. An intuitive task-oriented user interface will:

  • Auto-capture system diagnostic materials (operlog, logrec, logrec summary report)
  • Allow the captured diagnostic materials to be transferred via FTP to IBM, or an ISV, without having to keep track of where logs are archived
  • Provide an easier way to request that a dump be taken for a suppressed dump when it is generated within the specified symptom string

The z/OS Management Facility Incident Log capability can mean fewer errors while obtaining, aggregating, and sending data to IBM, or an ISV, and can result in faster diagnosis and higher system availability.

TCP/IP network policy-based configuration

Configuring a network can be complex. The process involves multiple tasks, the configuration syntax can be complicated and error-prone, and it is often difficult to assess how configuration changes impact the network.

The z/OS Management Facility V1.11 Configuration Assistant for z/OS Communications Server provides assistance in configuring TCP/IP networking policies and can help dramatically reduce the amount of time required to create network configuration files. Configuration assistance is provided for the following policy-based network technologies:

  • Application Transparent - Transport Layer Security
  • IP Security
  • Intrusion Detection Services
  • Network Security Services
  • Quality of Service
  • Policy Based Routing
  • Defense Manager Daemon

For each of these technologies, step by step tasks are provided, complete with setup for RACF® security, started procedures, and Policy Agent configuration. Health checks are provided to ensure the consistency and accuracy of policy definitions.

The Configuration Assistant for z/OS Communications Server is also available as an as-is, nonwarranted, Windows-based tool that is downloadable from the Web. The Windows-based Configuration Assistant and the z/OS Management Facility-based Configuration Assistant are planned to coexist concurrently for the near future. New functions and enhancements for the Configuration Assistant will be integrated into z/OS Management Facility, but may not be provided in the Windows-based Configuration Assistant.

Economics

A large portion of the z/OS Management Facility application is written in Java, and therefore, is eligible for the System z Application Assist Processor (zAAP). In addition, portions of z/OS Management Facility workload are planned to be eligible for IBM System z Integrated Information Processor (zIIP) as well. Some functions in z/OS Management Facility use the Common Information Model (CIM) set of industry standards to communicate with z/OS subsystems and starting with z/OS V1.11, the z/OS CIM server processing is eligible to run on the zIIP.

Note: Additional System z optimization may be realized from a new z/OS capability. z/OS V1.11 is enhanced with a new capability that can enable System z Application Assist Processor (zAAP) eligible workloads to run on System z Integrated Information Processors (zIIPs). This function is planned to allow you to run zIIP- and zAAP-eligible workloads on only one type of specialty engine -- the zIIP. The zAAP on zIIP capability is not available if z/OS is operating in an LPAR and zAAPs are installed on the server. See Software Announcement 209-242, dated August 18, 2009.

Installation

The initial release of the IBM z/OS Management Facility is planned to be available September 25, 2009 in CBPDO, ServerPac, and SystemPac®. When ordering z/OSMF in a ServerPac or SystemPac, postinstallation customization steps create and verify a default instance of z/OSMF. This is intended to allow z/OSMF to be started and be ready to use when z/OS V1.11 is started. If you install z/OSMF using CBPDO, the planning section in the user's guide and the setup scripts included in the product can help simplify end-end configuration and verification. System setup is performed for all of the z/OS components required.

Value Unit-based pricing

Value Unit pricing for eligible IBM System z IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA) programs enables a lower cost of incremental growth and enterprise aggregation. Each System z IPLA product with Value Unit pricing has a single price per Value Unit and a conversion matrix, called Value Unit Exhibit, for converting from some designated measurement to Value Units. Most commonly, Millions of Service Units (MSUs) is the measurement designated by IBM to be converted to Value Units. Some other measurements are engines or messages. Since MSUs are the most common measurement, that measurement will be used for the remainder of this description.

Value Unit pricing offers price benefits for you. For each System z IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, the quantity of that program needed to satisfy applicable IBM terms and conditions is referred to as the required license capacity. Each of the various Value Unit Exhibits stipulate that the larger your required license capacity, the fewer Value Units per MSU you will need. Value Unit Exhibits are uniquely identified by a three-digit code and referred to using the nomenclature VUExxx, where xxx is the three-digit code.

Subsequent acquisitions of Value Unit priced programs offer additional price benefits. The quantity of each System z IPLA program that you have acquired is referred to as entitled license capacity. If you wish to grow your entitled license capacity for a System z IPLA program, the calculation to determine additional needed Value Units is based upon the number of Value Units already acquired.

For each System z IPLA program with Value Unit pricing, you should:

  • Determine the required license capacity, in MSUs
  • Aggregate the MSUs across the enterprise
  • Convert the total MSUs to Value Units, using the applicable Value Unit Exhibit
  • Multiply the price per Value Unit by the total number of Value Units to determine the total cost

To simplify conversion from the designated measurement to Value Units or vice-versa, use the Value Unit Converter Tool. For additional information or to obtain a copy of the Value Unit Converter Tool, visit the Value Unit Converter Tool Web site

http://ibm.com/zseries/swprice/vuctool

Note that Value Units of a given product cannot be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Units of another product.

To determine the required license capacity for the System z IPLA program you selected, refer to the Terms and conditions section.

Ordering example

The total number of Value Units is calculated according to the following example.

If your required license capacity is 1,500 MSUs for your selected System z IPLA product, the applicable Value Units would be:

Translation from MSUs to Value Units

         MSUs * Value Units/MSU = Value Units

Base 3 * 1.00 = 3.00
Tier A 42 * .45 = 18.90
Tier B 130 * .36 = 46.80
Tier C 140 * .27 = 37.80
Tier D 1,185 * .20 = 237.00

Total 1,500 343.50

When calculating the total number of Value Units, the sum is to be rounded up to the next integer.
