Overview
Bottom rule

To help customers in the chemical and petroleum industry improve implementation of projects and achieve integrated operations, IBM delivers the Chemical and Petroleum Integrated Information Framework, (IBM Chem and Petro Framework) a software platform based on industry and IT standards.

This software platform contains industry-specific content enabling the consistent representation of chemical and petroleum processes. This leverages a reference symantic model incorporating process equipment with connectivity, measurements, production calculation, key performance indicators and business events for use within workflows of business processes and visualization in context. A reference semantic model instance is built for each customer solution.

Based on IBM service oriented architecture (SOA) software, this framework enables smarter oil and gas industry solutions such as upstream integrated operations for monitoring well field and platform rotating equipment, turnaround optimization and integrated asset management to identify problems before breakdowns occur, thereby helping improve availability and decrease costs. The same software platform enables industry solutions connecting offshore platforms with onshore experts inside the company and with partners for real-time collaboration to help respond more quickly and accurately, optimizing human and production resources.

Oil and gas companies have extensive control systems and other production systems implemented at the facility and/or plant level, and resource planning systems at the administrative and/or enterprise level. There is a need for operations management and intelligence systems integrating and consolidating the applications in the domain between these systems. IBM Chem and Petro Framework helps bridge these domains. Existing equipment can be leveraged with incremental expansion across assets and processes as business needs dictate.

Description
Bottom rule

The framework delivers a software platform that gives standards-based access to integrated information about production processes and assets across multiple facilities. Chemical and Petroleum Integrated Information Framework delivers Business Process Management (BPM) with common services. It includes the following build, run and manage capabilities:

  • Build Server Edition and build Client Edition contain tooling and model ontology for chemical and petroleum companies to model their facilities and operations into an abstracted industry-specific reference semantic model. Build includes software architecture, process modeling, the semantic modeling of assets and locations, and publishing reusable services in the services repository. Visual clickable representations of the assets with process and instrumentation views are provided using ILOG JViews product based on Web 2.0.
  • Run Edition enables users to process business events and to execute their business process using business process execution language (BPEL) to invoke the services. It uses adapters to integrate the operation's equipment (for example, distributed control system (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC)) and systems (for example, historian, equipment monitoring) and is the platform on which the model-driven integration capability in the reference semantic model is implemented at run time. This ontology gives federated access to data without replication. This means that data remains in the emitting systems, avoiding error-prone replication of data.

The integration pattern, reference semantic model and services pattern facilitate access to and utility of real-time information, specifically in the upstream and downstream operations of the chemical and petroleum industry. This access to process tag data by any human or application anywhere in an enterprise, easily and in real time, provides an information transfer model that serves as a directory so users can find data and documents. Business events are defined and managed to help automate and standardize processes involving massive amounts of data to speed pre-defined processes and alert experts with timely insight.

  • Manage Server Edition and manage Client Edition deliver the robust monitoring and and management capabilities that implementing integrated processes in real time operations require. This standards-based tool can monitor the process orchestrations and services originated on the run infrastructure to help allow chemical and petroleum customers to deliver the expected systems and application performance and availability.

Key benefits

The Chemical and Petroleum Integrated Information Framework helps deliver new business benefits such as turn-around optimization and increased production by utilizing distinctive new technology approaches, including the reference semantic model based on industry standards, Web browser visualization software, and enablement in an open SOA environment. This capability enables the delivery of a consistent unit operations representation, standardization of processes and performance measures, service patterns, and business event filtering with advanced alerting and visualization capabilities in context of the equipment operations.

The Chemical and Petroleum Integrated Information Framework supports industrial standards, leveraging OPC and information mapped to reference-semantic-model ontology measurement values, and using key industry standards such as ISA S88/S95, ISO 15926, IEEE 61970/68, and MIMOSA/Open O&M for asset and physical hierarchy representation.

Users can work smarter as a result of the framework implementation. The framework is designed to help improve productivity of skilled users by allowing them to interpret equipment measurements in context in real time measurements. It can help reduce costs by using federated information to provide performance comparisons across multiple assets throughout the enterprise. This helps reduce risk and time to value with a pretested platform that can be customized to customers' specific needs.

Using the Chemical and Petroleum Integrated Information Framework Build Edition, Run Edition, and Manage Edition capabilities can help users reduce planned and unplanned shutdowns by performance analysis through integration with asset management applications such as Maximo® Oil & Gas, and increase production and decrease maintenance costs based on delivery of enterprise-wide event-based information. Finally, this framework can help a business become more agile by extending business process management and best practices with the capability to incrementally add additional assets and processes as the enterprise grows.

Solutions architecture

Given extensive instrumentation across oil fields, pipelines, refineries and chemical plants, their integrated operations vision now requires improving integrated business process management and visualization in context. The IBM Chem and Petro Framework helps increase interconnected and intelligent operations with a new approach for accessing disperse control system, historian, and asset data and delivering it to key users and systems in a context ideal for taking smarter action and improving business process execution. This helps transform the way business users view and interact with their upstream and downstream assets and teams.

This framework is designed to deliver production decision-makers with new or improved capabilities:

  • Visualization of contextual oil field information: View the oil field or refinery through an intuitive graphical interface, running on a thin client, where sensor and machine data is presentable in clickable, hierarchal levels of detail, ready for analysis and decision making.
  • Better decisions utilizing interconnected, instrumented assets, and predictive analysis:Perform™ more sophisticated analysis of oil field or refinery production, viewing KPIs and measurements in the right business context, to aid both real-time decision-making and operational planning.
  • Intelligent alerts and event management: Detect, evaluate, and respond to business events with actions to both human and system participants. Predefine business events to speed action from massive amounts of data received.
  • Optimized automation and integration: Help provide an open enterprise data and process integration framework for existing and new manufacturing applications
  • Expert collaboration: Enable or extend the ability to collaborate with experts on challenges and solutions instantly via collaboration technologies, shared information, all available from an exciting new vision of the business control
  • Enterprise connectivity with enterprise asset management, enterprise resource planning, and other systems: Share critical operational information with other enterprise applications enabling extended business users to better plan, forecast, and respond to business imperatives.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor families (vendors and brands). A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on the level or tier of all processor cores activated and available for use by the Program on the server. Some programs allow licensing to less than the full capacity of the server"s activated processor cores, sometimes referred to as sub-capacity licensing. For programs which offer sub-capacity licensing, if a server is partitioned utilizing eligible partitioning technologies, then a PoE must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition where the program runs or is managed by the program. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Terms or the program"s License Information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms. The PVU entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another program.

For general overview of PVUs for processor families (vendors and brands), go to

http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing _for_customers.html

To calculate the exact PVU entitlements required for the program, go to
