Description
Bottom rule

The IBM family of Distributed Communications Servers helps connect employees, customers, and trading partners across multiprotocol networks, enhancing business flexibility by extending existing host applications to the Internet. The Communications Server products in this release have parity with one another in the platforms they support. With the Version 6.4.0 release, Windows, AIX, Linux, and Linux on System z platforms can provide the same level of functionality for the SNA connectivity requirements.

For details about features and functions, visit

http://www.ibm.com/software/network/commserver/

New functions in Communications Server for AIX, Communications Server for Linux, Communications Server for Linux on System z, and Communications Server for Windows:

Virtualization support HPR connections:

Distributed Communications Server family of products provide improvements to HPR connections, especially Enterprise Extender (HPR/IP), when running in a virtual operating system environment. When a Communications Server is running in a virtual system like VMWare, XEN, or Microsoft® Virtual Server, there may be times when the real-time clock is not as accurate as needed. The new improvement uses Progressive ARB to handle directly attached links, including Connections Network links, to rely on buffer resources and not the real-time clock. This will provide more reliable connectivity and improved performance between a virtual system and a partner SNA node when the system is put under a heavy load.

APPN enhancement for Path Switch delay support

The Distributed Communications Server family of products now provides a setting for the minimum delay period, in seconds, before an HPR link will perform a path switch. When an HPR connection is determined to need a new route calculation, a minimum delay can be set so that excessive Path Switch occurrences are prevented. This helps keep the level of network traffic to a minimum as trouble spots in the network are found and corrected.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 support

For the Linux platforms that use Communications Server for Linux (i686, x86_64, ppc64), and the Communications Server for Linux on System z (s390x), and the Remote API Linux clients, support for the SLES 11 release has been added.

IPv6 support for TN3270 Server, SNA API on Windows servers

With this release, the Communications Server for Windows adds support for IPv6 clients for the TN3270 Server and SNA API server. Previous releases of the Communications Server products for AIX, Linux, and Linux on System z platforms have had support for IPv6 clients connecting to TN3270 Server and Remote API clients.

Improved trace and logging options for Windows Remote API clients

The Windows Remote API client now has a configurable setting for activating traces, logs, and messages. This provides an easier-to-use interface to manage the Windows clients when connected to an AIX or Linux server.

TN3270 device type and LU Model expanded support (added to Communications Server for AIX, Linux, and Linux on System z)

You can specify a mapping between TN3270 device types and the LU models that Communications Server for Linux should request from the host when these devices connect through Communications Server for Linux TN Server using DDDLU. This allows you to use the most appropriate LU model for each type of device.

Java for CPI-C application support for IBM Remote API Client for Windows (added to Communications Server for AIX, Linux, and Linux on System z)

The Windows, AIX, and Linux Communications Servers already have Java for CPI-C application support. Also, the AIX and Linux Remote API clients have the Java support for making CPI-C calls. This release adds this Java for CPI-C support to the Windows Remote API client. This allows Java applications to make calls to CPI-C verbs on the Windows platforms.

Application program interfaces:

As previously announced, the following APIs are included to provide support for existing programs used on previous versions of SNA Server/6000 and Communications Server for AIX.

  • Generic SNA
  • LU 0
  • Operating System Subroutines (LU types 1, 2, 3, and 6.2)
  • Library Subroutines for TP Conversations (LU types 1, 2, 3, and 6.2)
  • Management Services (MS)
  • Library Subroutines for Network Management (NMVTs)

Because the above APIs will not be enhanced and will be provided "as-is," with no support, it is recommended that new applications be developed with these enhanced APIs:

  • LUA API enables application programmers to write applications that communicate with host applications at the request unit and response unit (RU) level. LUA supports LU0, 1, 2, or 3 communications with the host.
  • NOF (Node Operator Facility) can be used to write applications that administer configuration and management resources.
  • The CPI-C API provides CPI-C 2.0+ support and is binary compatible with existing CPI-C applications written for earlier versions of Communications Server for AIX.
  • The APPC API supports LU 6.2 communications using either independent sessions for peer-to-peer communications or dependent sessions for host communications.
  • The CSV (Common Service Verb) API provides utility verbs that enable an application program to perform functions such as character set conversion and trace file control.
  • The MS (Management Services) API enables an application to communicate with other MS products in an APPN network.
  • The Host Access Class Library (Host Access API) is a Java API that provides the ability for users to develop 3270, 5250, or VT Java applications. Host Access API for Java provides a core set of classes and methods that allow the development of platform-independent applications that can access host information at the data stream level.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

Communications Server provides an essential foundation for networked computing by supporting the most widely used networking technologies, enabling you and business partners to build client/server applications independent of networking protocol or hardware.

With Communications Server, you can modernize your network without impacting your existing SNA application. You can also modernize your application and take advantage of service-oriented architecture and Java without changing your host applications. IBM experience with SNA, TCP/IP, and communications servers provides you with a high-performance, high-quality communications solution for enterprises with the potential to become an On Demand Business and to have virtualized environments.

Communications Server for AIX, Communications Server for Linux, and Communications Server for Linux on System z are most likely to be deployed in a central location. These products support larger TN3270 Server, Remote API client/server, and distributed connections across the enterprise. The cost to manage and maintain in a central place make these communications servers cost-effective by keeping SNA resources centralized.

Communications Server for Windows can be deployed in distributed branches or at a central location. The branch environment often has Windows servers, and these make ideal platforms for the Communications Server for Windows. With the advent of more virtualized servers being deployed, Communications Server V6.4 will provide the performance needed for handling the resource allocation in these environments.

Licensing notes for V6.4

The licensing options provided for IBM Communications Servers are designed to optimally address the majority of our customers' needs. However, if the licensing options for any of the four platforms below do not support your architecture, contact your IBM representative to discuss alternative options.

Windows and AIX

IBM Communications Server for Windows and IBM Communications Server for AIX licenses consist of two components, Server and User. A Server license is required for each instance of an installed Communications Server. The Server must be accompanied by the number of User licenses for persons or machines that use the communications functions of the Server. Conversely, every User license must be associated with a Server license. Note that multiple User licenses can be associated with a single Server license.

Any customer that does not have a license for at least one Server or has only Server licenses with no User licenses is considered noncompliant and is encouraged to contact their IBM representative to correct their entitlement.

Linux

IBM Communications Server for Linux is also licensed on a concurrent User basis. A User license is required for each person or machine using the services of the Communications Server, concurrently. Customers of IBM Communications Server for Linux are only required to purchase User licenses.

Linux on System z

There are two options for licensing the IBM Communications Server for Linux on System z. Customers can purchase either User licenses or Processor Value Units.

Charge metrics definitions

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor families (vendors and brands). A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on the level or tier of all processor cores activated and available for use by the program on the server. Some programs allow licensing to less than the full capacity of the server's activated processor cores, sometimes referred to as sub-capacity licensing. For programs which offer sub-capacity licensing, if a server is partitioned utilizing eligible partitioning technologies, then a PoE must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition where the program runs or is managed by the program. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Terms or the program's License Information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms. The PVU entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another program.

For general overview of PVUs for processor families (vendors and brands), go to

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/ pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

To calculate the exact PVU entitlements required for the program, go to

https://www-112.ibm.com/software/howtobuy/passportadvantage/ valueunitcalculator/vucalc.wss

Server

Server is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. A Server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user or client devices. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processor cores or partitions in the server on which the program runs or each server managed by the program. Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server.

Concurrent User

Concurrent User is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. A Concurrent User is a shared user access to the program within or outside of your enterprise. The program may be installed only on one computer or one server. The total number of Concurrent Users simultaneously accessing the program at any moment in time may not exceed the highest number of Concurrent Users authorized by the PoE. You must have an entitlement for each Concurrent User simultaneously accessing the program or any program component in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.
