Description
Bottom rule

GPFS for POWER delivers file system services to parallel and serial applications. It allows parallel applications simultaneous access to the same or different files, from any node that has the GPFS file system mounted, while managing a high level of control over all file system operations. GPFS is particularly appropriate in an environment where the aggregate peak need for data bandwidth exceeds the capability of a distributed file system server.

GPFS allows users shared file access within a single GPFS cluster and across multiple GPFS clusters. A GPFS cluster can consist of AIX® nodes, Linux nodes, Windows® nodes, or a combination thereof, and NSDs created and maintained by the NSD component of GPFS. GPFS does not support homogeneous Windows clusters.

GPFS V3.3 enhancements

GPFS introduces a new pricing, licensing, and entitlement structure for Version 3.3 and Version 3.2.

  • GPFS has two types of licenses, a server license and a client license. For each node in a GPFS cluster (see Permitted use of GPFS Server and GPFS Client below), the customer obtains the appropriate number of server or client licenses that correspond to the way GPFS is used on that node.
  • Licenses continue to be priced per core.
  • During GPFS cluster configuration, the customer will be prompted to identify whether a particular node is a GPFS Server or a GPFS Client. If a GPFS Client is chosen, function that requires a GPFS Server license will be disabled on this node. Because the node that acts as the GPFS cluster configuration server requires a GPFS Server designation, at least one node in the GPFS cluster will require one or more GPFS Server licenses.
  • GPFS V3.2 will remain available to order; however, the pricing will now be the same as GPFS V3.3 for GPFS Server and GPFS Client licenses. GPFS V3.2 customers will not be prompted during cluster configuration to identify a node as a GPFS Server or GPFS Client. During the ordering process, the number of GPFS Server and GPFS Client licenses will need to be identified.
  • Permitted use of GPFS Server and GPFS Client:
  • A node is defined as an individual operating system image that may appear on a single computer within a cluster, on a system within a cluster, or on a partition.
    • You may use the GPFS Server in order to perform the following GPFS functions:
      • Mounting GPFS file systems and accessing data from operating system block devices and NSD servers
      • Performing GPFS management functions such as cluster configuration manager, quorum node, manager node, and Network Shared Disk (NSD) server
      • Sharing data through any application, service protocol, or method, such as Network File System (NFS), Common Internet File System (CIFS), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), or Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)
    • You may use GPFS Client in order to perform the following functions:
      • Mounting GPFS file systems and accessing data from operating system block devices and NSD servers
      • Exchanging data between nodes that locally mount the same GPFS file system
    • The GPFS Client may not be used for nodes to share GPFS data through any application, service, protocol, or method, such as NFS, CIFS, FTP, or HTTP. For this use, entitlement to GPFS Server would be required.
  • Existing customers must contact their IBM representatives when renewing their GPFS entitlement to migrate their current licenses to the GPFS Server and GPFS Client model.
  • See the Ordering information section for an ordering example.

Note: Refer to the GPFS FAQs available from the following Web site for more information, including example configurations and license definitions regarding the new GPFS Server and GPFS Client model.
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/clresctr/vxrx/index.jsp

Administration improvements include:

  • The scope of password-less remote shell command execution is now reduced. GPFS can now be configured so that password-less remote shell execution is not required between all nodes. Prior to GPFS V3.3, GPFS had to be configured so that all nodes can run commands on other nodes via a remote shell without being prompted for a password. GPFS V3.3 can be configured so that only the terminal session where a GPFS administrative command is being executed has to be able to execute remote shell commands on other nodes without being prompted for a password. All other nodes in the cluster do not have to have the ability to run password-less commands everywhere else.
  • GPFS for Linux improves the build process for the GPFS portability layer by:
    • Eliminating the dependency on the imake utility through the use of the kernel Kbuild infrastructure
    • Optionally generating an RPM package containing the GPFS portability layer binaries to facilitate the installation process
  • With GPFS V3.3, new file systems must be created utilizing NSDs only. IBM Virtual Shared Disks will no longer be supported on new file systems; however, GPFS will continue to support existing file systems with IBM Virtual Shared Disks.
  • Users are now allowed to define custom commands to be executed after certain GPFS events. The administrator can use the mmaddcallback command to register a user exit script, and the mmdelcallback command to delete a user exit script, and the mmlscallback command to list all the callback scripts currently registered in the GPFS configuration.

Performance and scaling improvements include:

  • The limit on the number of snapshots per file system has been raised from 32 to 256.
  • Performance enhancements have been made to the mmrestripefs, mmfsck, and mmcheckquota commands, and directory locking for concurrent file creates and deletes from multiple nodes.
  • GPFS V3.3 adds support for the Linux AIO APIs io_submit and io_getevents (pread and pwrite only) for workloads that open files using the O_DIRECT flag when the file system is created on local disks.

Policy improvements include several enhancements to the GPFS mmapplypolicy command and the associated GPFS SQL-based policy language:

  • A new command option (-g) is provided to enable a fully parallelized (multi-node and multi-threaded) directory traversal and faster metadata scan with policy rule set evaluation.
  • When invoked with the new -g option, mmapplypolicy can tolerate and recover from faults in individual nodes.
  • New command options and policy language extensions allow finer control and customization of the generation of the file lists and the execution of the user scripts associated with the EXTERNAL POOL and EXTERNAL LIST features of the policy language. File lists can be generated by the mmapplypolicy command; generated or manipulated by user programs; and input to the mmapplypolicy command for execution.
  • The THRESHOLD file selection criteria can be interpreted with respect to GPFS quotas for EXTERNAL POOLs or EXTERNAL LISTs.

Existing calls for the Inode Scan Interface are enhanced and new calls are available.

GPFS V3.3 provides additional scalable filesystem backup facilities through the enhanced mmbackup command. Enhancements include:

  • Improved performance by use of the policy engine
  • The processing of unlinked filesets
  • Parallel backup to TSM servers
  • Backup of snapshots as filesystem data versus being under the .snapshots/directory
  • Backup of a live system

Improvements have been made in the GPFS trace subsystem on Linux. The trace subsystem can be configured to run in an overwrite mode for reduced trace overhead and to perform raw trace data compression for extended trace coverage.

Improvements have been made in detecting and diagnosing network problems. GPFS can now automatically detect lost GPFS network messages.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

GPFS is ideal for several different roles in clustered computing and shared storage:

  • A multicluster file system for parallel processing on compute clusters, featuring extreme scalability and throughput optimized for streaming workloads such as those common in Web 2.0, digital media, scientific, and engineering applications. Users are allowed shared access to files in either the cluster where the file system was created or other GPFS clusters. Each site in the network is managed as a separate cluster, while allowing shared file system access.
  • An information lifecycle management file system enabling multiple tiers of storage, including tape, with powerful policy-driven file placement, migration, archival, and deletion. The unique GPFS policy engine enables file migration scalable to billions of files and multiple petabytes of data.
  • A scalable, shared storage file system for storage consolidation and virtualization. This includes Clustered NFS support, providing a scalable shared namespace, enabling horizontally scalable file serving. Additionally, GPFS includes many data/SAN management features, including storage hardware-agnostic snapshots/mirroring.
  • A high availability file system for any business application or database that may benefit from very rapid failover of a consistent application data environment.
  • A distributed file system, providing a global, cross-platform coherent namespace across an enterprise for around-the-world, around-the-clock operations.

RVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. RVU entitlements are based on the quantity of a specific designated measurement for the given program. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of RVUs required for your environment as defined by the specific program terms. The RVU entitlements are specific to the program and may include, but are not limited to the following: client devices, data source records, messages, and servers, and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with RVU entitlements of another program. To understand these benefits of RVU licensing and to determine how many RVUs to obtain for the program, contact your IBM representative.

Product feature numbers

5765-G66 - General Parallel File System (GPFS) for POWER, V3.3

New users should specify type 5765, model G66, and the one-time charge (OTC) feature number in the appropriate server-size column with a quantity equal to the total number of processors in that server running the supported operating system in which General Parallel File System will be installed. If a processor is active and GPFS will not be running on that processor, an order for GPFS is not required.

Ordering example:

  • One GPFS license = one processor core
  • Common small commercial Power Systems cluster, virtualization is used:
    • Four Power 570 systems, eight CPUs per physical system, each partitioned into two LPARs with four CPUs per LPAR. Each LPAR is a GPFS node. All nodes access the disk through a SAN.
    • Three LPARs are configured as quorum nodes: three nodes with four CPUs each: 12 server licenses
    • Five LPARs are configured as nonquorum nodes: five nodes with four CPUs each: 20 client licenses

Note: Refer to the GPFS FAQs available from the following Web site for more information, including example configurations and the licenses required for the new GPFS Server and GPFS Client model.

System Program Order (SPO): An order for 5692-A5L or 5692-A6P or 5692-LOP SPO is mandatory for shipments of program distribution. The individual licensed program orders are for registration and billing purposes only. No shipment occurs under these orders.

Specify feature number 3410.

Machine-readable materials are only available on CD-ROM. To receive shipment of machine-readable materials, the order needs to include SPO 5692-A5L for either, GPFS for AIX or GPFS for Linux on POWER. The individual licensed program order (for example, 5765-G66) must still be ordered but will be for registration and billing purposes only and will not result in shipment of materials.

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) agreement applies for subscription and support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Yes

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Authorization for use on home/portable computer

You may not copy and use this program on another computer without paying additional license fees.

Passport Advantage applies

No

Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) applies

Yes. All distributed software licenses include Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.

While your Software Subscription and Support is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime, shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

Software Subscription and Support does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.

Variable charges: The applicable processor-based one-time charge will be based on the group of the designated machine on which the program is licensed for use. If the program is designated to a processor in a group for which no charge is listed, the charge of the next higher group listed applies. For movement to a machine in a higher group, an upgrade charge equal to the difference in the then-current charges between the two groups will apply. For movement to a machine in a lower group, there will be no adjustment or refund of charges paid.
