Description
Bottom rule

z/VSE Version 4 Release 2 (z/VSE V4.2) is built on a heritage of ongoing refinement and innovation that spans more than four decades. It is the latest step in the ongoing evolution of z/VSE. z/VSE V4.2 continues the z/VSE focus on scalability, security, interoperability, and service-oriented architecture. It is designed to help protect and leverage existing investments in VSE information assets. z/VSE V4.2 is designed to address the needs of clients with growing core VSE workloads and/or those who wish to exploit Linux on System z for new, Web-based business solutions and infrastructure simplification.

z/VSE V4.2 exploits selected features of innovative IBM System z and IBM System Storage technology. It executes in z/Architecture mode only and supports 64-bit real addressing for selected system functions. z/VSE V4.2 is not designed to support 64-bit virtual addressing or allow 64-bit addressing for user applications.

z/VSE V4.2 supports IBM System z servers:

  • IBM System z10 Enterprise Class (z10 EC) and z10 Business Class (z10 BC)
  • IBM System z9 EC and z9 BC
  • IBM eServer zSeries 990, 890, 900, and 800

In addition to function delivered earlier, z/VSE V4.2 now offers:

Encryption Facility for z/VSE Version 1 Release 2 (EF for z/VSE V1.2)

The objective of Encryption Facility for z/VSE is to help secure customer and business data as well as satisfy regulatory requirements. It is designed to help protect data from loss as well as inadvertent or deliberate compromise.

Encryption Facility for z/VSE is an optional, priced feature of VSE Central Functions Version 8. It is a host-based software solution designed to encrypt sensitive data before transferring it to tape for archival purposes, or to exchange with remote locations or business partners. In addition to writing encrypted data to tape, EF for z/VSE can be used to produce encrypted data written to disk and other removable media.

EF for z/VSE is designed to exploit hardware encryption technology, including CPACF and Crypto Express2.

With Release 2, EF for z/VSE has been enhanced to support the OpenPGP standard. OpenPGP is a standard protocol for ensuring the integrity of data that can be exchanged between trusted partners. It is designed to help provide data integrity through:

  • Data encryption using a randomly generated symmetric session key. The randomly generated session key is then encrypted with either public key or password-based encryption and prefixed to the encrypted data.
  • OpenPGP certificates for the exchange of key information that can provide the data integrity service.

OpenPGP support is designed to offer even more choice and flexibility for exchanging data with business partners. For example, it does not require that your business partners purchase new storage hardware, have a mainframe, or run z/VSE.

EF for z/VSE V1.2 OpenPGP support is designed to comply with selected OpenPGP standard (RFC 4880) requirements and is designed to be compatible with other products that are OpenPGP-compliant. This support is designed to allow you to exchange an encrypted, compressed file between your internal data centers using EF for z/VSE V1.2 and any remote site, external business partner, or vendor who has an OpenPGP-compliant client, regardless of server or operating system.

EF for z/VSE V1.2 OpenPGP support includes, but is not limited to:

  • Use of SAM files, VSE/VSAM files, VSE library members, tapes, or virtual tapes as input or output
  • Password-based encryption of session key
  • Importing/exporting of OpenPGP certificates
  • RSA key generation using the Keyman/VSE tool
  • Data encryption with a randomly generated symmetric session key using AES 128-, 192-, and 256-bit keys, and Triple-DES algorithms
  • Symmetric encryption of randomly generated symmetric session key using AES 128-, 192-, and 256-bit keys, and Triple-DES algorithms
  • Asymmetric encryption of randomly generated symmetric keys using 512-, 1024-, and 2048-bit RSA keys
  • Optional compression using ZIP and ZLIB algorithms
  • Digest/Hash using SHA-1, MD5, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 algorithms

To complement EF for z/VSE, Keyman/VSE (a tool at no additional charge, downloadable from the z/VSE Web site) provides:

  • Import/export of PGP certificates (needed to upload a public key from a PGP certificate to VSE)
  • Conversion between x.509 certificates and PGP certificates (needed to transfer a public key from VSE into a PGP environment)

With OpenPGP support added to EF for z/VSE, you now have a choice of two formats. System z format, introduced in EF for z/VSE V1.1, continues to be offered in V1.2. System z format is compatible between EF for z/OS® and EF for z/VSE. The functions and services supported by OpenPGP format are not compatible with functions and services of the System z format. Both the Java-based Client and Decryption Client for z/OS support the System z format only.

OpenPGP offers you one more option to meet your critical encryption needs:

  1. EF for z/VSE System z format may be suitable for data exchanges between locations with IBM System z servers.
  2. EF for z/VSE OpenPGP format may be better suited for exchange with an external business partner who may, or may not, have an IBM System z.
  3. IBM TS1120 or 1130 encrypting tapes may be better suited for high-volume backup/archive, or when exchange between IBM System z servers is required.

New optional products

  • IBM Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE V7.5 is designed to execute applications developed with the Enterprise Generation Language (EGL) capability of Rational Business Developer.

Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE V7.5 enables z/VSE customers to develop new applications using modern EGL technology. For example, customers with both z/VSE and Linux for System z can use the same development environment to support both platforms. They may be able to substantially reduce unique skills and training needed to support each environment. In addition, Rational Business Developer helps protect the investment of existing IBM VisualAge® Generator users. Clients may be able to reuse and extend valuable existing IT assets, including automated conversion of VisualAge Generator applications to EGL.

Using the new extension to Rational Business Developer, COBOL code can be generated and deployed in z/VSE as:

    • Traditional 3270 CICS® applications
    • Traditional batch applications
    • Application programs capable of being invoked from an EGL Web or Web 2.0 front-end, or from an EGL service on a distributed application server

Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE 7.5 is the replacement for VisualAge Generator Server V1.2.

For supported z/VSE releases other than z/VSE 4.2, see Software Announcement 208-461, dated December 09, 2008.

  • IBM WebSphere MQ for z/VSE V3.0 is a new member of the WebSphere MQ family of messaging products. It is designed to help provide improved interoperability on both distributed and mainframe platforms as well as potential performance enhancements. MQ for z/VSE is designed to enhance manageability through WebSphere MQ Explorer, as well as currency and performance enhancements for the IBM z/VSE platform.

IBM WebSphere MQ for z/VSE 3.0 integrates with IBM WebSphere MQ in solutions for:

    • Reliable application connectivity
    • SOA connectivity with a proven messaging backbone
    • Universal, multipurpose data transport

    IBM WebSphere MQ for z/VSE V3.0 is a replacement for MQSeries® for VSE/ESA V2.1.2.

z/VSE V4.2 is planned to be the last release to offer CICS/VSE. Beginning with VSE/ESA V2.4 (June 1999), IBM has delivered CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA together with CICS/VSE at no additional expense. That practice is planned to continue with z/VSE V4.2. Enhanced BSM security in z/VSE V3 and additional VSE tasks in z/VSE V4.2 help reduce inhibitors to migration from CICS/VSE to CICS TS for VSE/ESA.

All statements regarding IBM's plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice.

Compatibility

Compatibility aspects include:

  • The support for "up to 512 VSE tasks" has to be enabled explicitly. A compatibility mode is provided for applications that rely on the "old" 255 task limit.
  • The z/VSE V4.2 product is no longer delivered on 3480 tape cartridges.
  • The optional feature GPS (shipped with TCP/IP for VSE/ESA) does not support Double Byte Character Set (DBCS) printing.
  • The following z/VSE V4.2 products are replaced and no longer delivered:

Limitations

Limitations when using the Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) process:

  • Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) to z/VSE V4.2 is possible from z/VSE V3.1 and z/VSE V4.1 for English and Japanese versions. The FSU process supports two releases only.
  • If your VSE system is a German or Spanish version, FSU is not possible. You have to do initial installation to upgrade to an English or Japanese version of z/VSE V4.2.
  • Users migrating from VSE/ESA V2.4 or later can either FSU to the next possible release prior to FSU to z/VSE V4.2 or do an initial installation.
  • Users migrating from a release prior to VSE/ESA V2.4 must use initial installation.
Performance considerations

The overall performance of z/VSE Version 4 Release 2 depends on the individual hardware and software components and on the specific environment and setup parameters.

In general, the overall CPU requirement of z/VSE V4.2 is similar to that of z/VSE V4.1. This applies as long as the same environment is used (for example, Batch or CICS TS for VSE/ESA V1.1.1) without exploitation of new functions. Actual user experience may vary.

For more information on z/VSE Version 4 Release 2 performance, visit the z/VSE home page at

Further information on the status of z/VSE and related programs can be found at

http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/zseries/zvse/

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA

Each feature of TCP/IP for VSE/ESA (Application Pak, NFS, GPS) requires a unique user access key. The license order for TCP/IP for VSE/ESA can be placed either together with any other program with the z/VSE V4.2 product set or alone at a later point in time.

SSL for VSE is also key protected and only usable with the key for the Application Pak. If you use a product key that allows you to run TCP/IP in demonstration mode only, you cannot use SSL for VSE.

The user access keys will be generated and delivered automatically from IBM whenever an order is placed for one of these features.

Customers who do not wish to use TCP/IP for VSE/ESA from IBM are requested to run product delete jobs (that are provided with z/VSE V4.2) after system installation, to delete the product from their system.

Note: It is suggested that customers who have licensed "TCP/IP for VSE" from a third-party vendor check which Service Pack, if any, needs to be installed. Customers who have licensed "TCP/IP for VSE" from a third-party vendor should read supplementary information, if available. PRODUCT ACCESS KEYS FROM IBM AND THIRD-PARTY VENDORS ARE DIFFERENT AND ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE.

DB2 Server for VSE and VM Version 7 Release 5, DB2 Server for VSE Client Edition Version 7 Release 5

DB2 Server for VSE and VM and DB2 Server for VSE Client Edition use an access/usage protection method that requires a password key to enable the software function. The password key will be generated and delivered automatically from IBM when an order is placed for DB2 Server for VSE and VM or DB2 Server for VSE Client Edition.

ACF/VTAM for VSE/ESA Version 4 Release 2

ACF/VTAM for VSE/ESA V4.2 uses an access/usage protection method that requires a password key to enable the software function. The following types may be ordered:

  • Client/Server (CS)
  • Multi Domain (MD)
  • Inter Enterprise (IE)

The password key will be generated and delivered automatically from IBM accordingly when an order is placed for ACF/VTAM for VSE/ESA V4.2.

Software key management

In exceptional cases (for example, off-line situations), it may be necessary to contact the IBM Registration Center by telephone, fax, mail, or e-mail as appropriate. Note that the IBM Registration Center cannot handle product or license orders. You may contact them only if you already have a license for your software program.

All unlicensed online books are also available on DVD SK3T-8348, the VSE on DVD Collection.

The VSE Collection on DVD contains libraries for most of the products that run on z/VSE Version 4 Release 2. The VSE Collection on DVD will be available at general availability of the z/VSE Version 4 Release 2 product. For a list of kit contents, contact your IBM Business Partner or IBM representative.

One copy of the DVD Collection Kit will be shipped automatically with the product at no additional charge. Additional copies of the DVD Collection Kit must be ordered separately for a fee from the IBM Publications Center at

http://www.ibm.com/shop/publications/order

The online books can be used with the BookManager READ licensed programs in any of the READ-supported environments.

You may now use the SoftCopy Librarian (SCL) to obtain and manage bookshelves over the Internet, from the IBM PUBLIB Web site, as well as from other Web sites that provide support for the SoftCopy Librarian.

Version 4 of SoftCopy Librarian is included on all collection kits for the IBM Online Library. This free program improves softcopy management on a z/OS or OS/390® host or server, as well as on LANs and workstations. It runs on Windows 2000 and Windows XP. For an introduction, refer to the SoftCopy Librarian chapter in Installing, Managing, and Using the Online Library (GC31-8311), which is available as INSTALL.TXT (for file viewers), INSTALL.PDF (printable file), INSTALL.BOO (for BookManager readers), and INSTALL.HTM (for Web browsers) in the root directory of this VSE softcopy collection.

Terms and conditions for use of the machine-readable files are shipped with the files.

VPL can be accessed via ServiceLink and DialIBM. For details, ask your IBM representative or an IBM Business Partner.

z/VSE V4.2 optional programs

May be available, as announced, with the individual programming announcements.

Subsequent updates (technical newsletters or revisions between releases) to the publications shipped with the product will be distributed to the user of record for as long as a license for this software remains in effect. A separate publication order or subscription is not needed.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
