Overview
More customers are taking advantage of sub-capacity licensing as they deploy the latest virtualization technologies to their server environments. Over the past twelve months, IBM has introduced significant improvements for the Passport Advantage Sub-capacity Licensing offering, including the release of the IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT) announced in July, 2008.
Effective today, additional enhancements include:
- Expansion of sub-capacity licensing eligibility to most IBM PVU-based software
- Simplified product ordering and license tracking using a single part number for both full-capacity and sub-capacity licensed environments
- More eligible virtualization technologies for x86 servers:
- Citrix Xen Server 4.1 and 5.0 for single server, resource pool (a group of servers with XenCenter 5.0), and XenMotion (mobility)
- Microsoft® Hyper-V Server 2008 and Windows® Server 2008 Hyper-V for single server, cluster, and Quick Migration (mobility)
- VMware Server 2.0 (single server)
- Eligibility of certain BIOS settings and operating system commands for x86 servers that limit processor core resources
For a complete list of eligible virtualization technologies, refer to
Select Find out more about Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express, locate Licensing, and then select Sub-capacity Licenses.

Key prerequisites
The PVU pricing structure applies to select IBM Passport Advantage eligible programs. The flexibility of sub-capacity licensing is available under the terms of the Attachment for Sub-capacity Licensing (Z125-7174) to those customers who have accepted the Sub-capacity Licensing offering, under their IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement.

Description
Licensing and pricing
Under PVU licensing structure, each processor technology is assigned a specific number of PVUs. Customers who have accepted the terms of the Attachment for Sub-capacity Licensing offering (Z125-7174), must acquire the total number of PVUs for each processor core in the partition on which the software programs are deployed. Otherwise, PVUs must be acquired for all of the physical processor cores of the server or server cluster. IBM continues to define a processor, for purposes of IBM PVU-based software, to be each processor core on a chip.
Each software program has a unique price per PVU. To determine the total cost of deploying an individual software program, you multiply the program price per PVU by the total number of PVUs required.
For a list of PVU requirements by processor, refer to the PVU table on the Passport Advantage site
Select Find out more about Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express, locate Licensing, then select PVU licensing for Distributed SW.
With full-capacity licensing, you must acquire the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processors on the server available to the program or a component of the program.
In sub-capacity licensing,2 you must acquire the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processors in partitions (utilizing eligible partitioning technologies) on the server available to the program or a component of the program.

Migration of existing sub-capacity part number entitlements
You can view your Software Subscription and Support (S&S) entitlements on the Active Entitlement report available through Passport Advantage Online.
For Software S&S renewals for these programs, your existing sub-capacity part numbers for License and Software S&S entitlements will be treated as if they were obtained under the equivalent full capacity part numbers. For a complete list of these programs, refer to Software Announcement 909-068, dated April 7, 2009.
Your next Software S&S renewal quotation will show the replacement part numbers. These PVU quantities will also be reflected in your Active Entitlements on Passport Advantage Online. Visit
Select Passport Advantage Online. Logon at Customer sign in.
After July 1, 2009, Software S&S renewal quotations will reflect this change.
