IBM Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE V7.5 enables EGL-generated COBOL applications on the z/VSE platform
IBM United States Software Announcement 208-461December 9, 2008
|
|
| At a glance |
Rational® COBOL Runtime for z/VSE provides the libraries to enable EGL code, generated as COBOL, to run on the z/VSE platform.
EGL, IBM's newest business language, frees developers to focus on the business problem rather than on the details of the target execution platforms and associated middleware. EGL is ideal for business-oriented development teams who value ease of learning and high productivity, but need to quickly deliver modern applications and services.
For ordering, contact your IBM® representative or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: LE001).

| Overview |
Organizations have heavy investments in z/VSE solutions that run their core business. In many cases, employees with language skills in this platform are retiring and college-hires are not willing to learn the necessary skills to maintain and build new solutions for the platform. With EGL, IBM has the unique ability to support these customers by enabling them to enhance and maintain their business applications without growing COBOL skills. It allows continued utilization of the System z® platforms with solutions that run in a native platform language like COBOL. However, it also allows these IT shops to standardize on a modern, highly productive, yet still familiar, programming language like EGL.
EGL, IBM's newest business language, frees developers to focus on the business problem rather than on the details of the target execution platforms and associated middleware. EGL is ideal for business-oriented development teams who value ease of learning and high productivity, but need to quickly deliver modern applications and services.
Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE provides the libraries to enable EGL code, generated as COBOL, to run on the z/VSE platform.

| Description |
IBM Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE V7.5 provides an alternative path to COBOL adoption and hides middleware and runtime complexities, enabling developers to achieve the highest levels of productivity.
Features:
- Supplies libraries for COBOL generated from EGL developed using IBM Rational Business Developer V7.5.1 with the IBM Rational Business Developer Extension for z/VSE V7.5.1
- Supports migrated VisualAge® Generator applications as well as programs generated with VisualAge Generator
- Facilitates migration from existing technologies to a modern development platform
- Offers a way to easily retrain procedural business programmers to be highly productive in the JEE world and build applications without deep knowledge of underlying technology
- Delivers applications based on industry standards that interoperate with existing systems
- Enables exploitation of visual programming techniques for Web development and code automation capabilities for rapid development of application business logic
- Built on a first-class services construct for the creation and consumption of Web Services for service-oriented architecture
Code can be deployed as:
- Traditional 3270 CICS® applications,
- Traditional batch applications, or
- Programs capable of being invoked from an EGL Web or Web 2.0 front-end or from an EGL service, which can be deployed on a distributed application server
IBM Rational Business Developer, along with IBM Rational COBOL Runtime for z/VSE, also enables organizations to easily reuse and extend valuable existing IT assets, including automated conversion of IBM VisualAge Generator applications to EGL.
Because of the simple and powerful EGL interoperability with existing assets and services, EGL Rich UI (available in Rational Business Developer V7.5.1) enables the creation of JavaServer Faces (JSF) or Web 2.0 front-ends for programs running on z/VSE. With EGL Rich UI, proven, reliable assets can be reused and delivered in new ways and to new audiences, all without rewriting or reengineering. With EGL Rich UI, legacy applications and data can be leveraged along with emerging Internet and B2B SOA based services to quickly provide powerful, innovative enterprise-level, customer-friendly Web solutions.

| IBM Electronic Services |
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
