DB2® High Performance Unload for Multiplatforms extracts data from DB2 for Linux®, UNIX®, and Windows® databases faster than standard database utilities.

With the new DB2 High Performance Unload V4.1 release, database administrators (DBAs) now have a new database-to-database data migration capability that:

  • Is quick and easy to configure
  • Can be scheduled to run as a single unit of work
  • Eliminates the need for temporary storage of unloaded data
  • Allows the DBA to move data between databases faster than ever before

For ordering, contact your IBM® representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: YE001).

Overview
Bottom rule

DB2 High Performance Unload is a high-speed tool for unloading, extracting, and repartitioning data in DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows databases. It helps DBAs to work with very large quantities of data with less effort and with faster results. Organizations value DB2 High Performance Unload for its ability to:

  • Execute concurrently with production applications -- maintaining system availability, but minimizing duration of impact to production performance
  • Reduce the risk of impacting online production by fitting more work (for example, unloads, backups, migrations, and repartitioning) into tight or shrinking batch windows
  • Deliver the value of new hardware and software investments faster by speeding database migrations
  • Recover from single table failures or accidental table drops by extracting a single table from a backup for restoration

Previous releases of DB2 High Performance Unload already provide faster and easier data unloads for DB2 than is possible with standard DB2 utilities.

Now with DB2 High Performance Unload V4.1, DBAs can better focus on choosing the data that they want to move and where they want to move it, and DB2 High Performance Unload will then execute that plan with less time spent by the DBAs, less chance of configuration mistakes, less usage of system resources, and less impact on the business that needs its important data in the new location as quickly as possible.

This release also extends platform support to include Windows 64-bit platforms.

Description
Bottom rule

When DBAs need to extract large amounts of data from their databases, they need the data very quickly. This is especially true for database migrations. The negative impact on businesses from lengthy database migrations can be very significant or can often prevent the database migration altogether. Slow migrations delay the value delivery from new hardware and software investments. Canceled migrations mean added cost and poor performance as organizations don't get the benefits of faster and more economical hardware platforms while application performance suffers, in spite of the increasingly large amounts of time spent by the DBA trying to tune the database for better performance.

New features in DB2 High Performance Unload V4.1 include:

  • Capability to migrate data directly from one database to another, including unloading, transferring, and loading of the data between the source database and target database without needing any intermediate storage
  • Enhanced syntax for defining unload specifications that are both easier to write and more reusable
  • New function providing the capability to generate the DB2 load file that can be used with the load command for the target database when the DBA prefers to unload data to temporary storage

DBAs using DB2 High Performance Unload V4.1 can more quickly define, and then execute database migrations to newer IBM and other hardware to increase the scalability, reliability, and performance of their mission-critical database applications. Database application throughput increases and the time spent by the DBAs reacting to performance issues decreases, without any time-consuming or expensive application changes.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) can be requested via the IBM Web site

http://www.ibm.com/able/product_accessibility/index.html

Section 508 of the U.S. Rehabilitation Act

DB2 High Performance Unload for Multiplatforms is capable as of January 16, 2009, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A U.S. Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT), containing details on the products accessibility compliance, can be requested at

http://www.ibm.com/able/product_accessibility/index.html

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

DB2 High Performance Unload V4.1 can be used with IBM Data Studio Administrator (formerly named DB2 Change Management Expert) to accelerate the speed at which DBAs can implement complex schema changes to more quickly get their production systems back online. Refer to Software Announcement 208-454, dated December 02, 2008.

When DBAs use DB2 Performance Expert for Linux, UNIX, and Windows utilization, DB2 High Performance Unload can be used to rearrange database data storage layouts to improve database access paths for better database responsiveness and overall throughput. Refer to Software Announcement 208-420, dated December 02, 2008.

Charge metrics definitions

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor families (vendors and brands). A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on the level or tier of all processor cores activated and available for use by the program on the server. Some programs allow licensing to less than the full capacity of the server's activated processor cores, sometimes referred to as sub-capacity licensing. For programs which offer sub-capacity licensing, if a server is partitioned utilizing eligible partitioning technologies, then a PoE must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition where the program runs or is managed by the program. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Terms or the program's License Information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms. The PVU entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another program.

For general overview of PVUs for processor families (vendors and brands), go to

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/ pvu_licensing_for_customers.html

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
