IBM solidDB Universal Cache V6.3 relational, in-memory database software accelerates industry-leading relational databases, such as IBM DB2, IDS, and Oracle, and increases their performance up to ten times faster. It uses the familiar SQL language and enables applications to achieve tens of thousands of transactions per second with response times measured in microseconds.

solidDB Universal Cache integrates with relational, disk-based databases to accelerate access to their data. This acceleration can be particularly valuable for performance-critical data frequently accessed by many concurrent users, typical of applications such as ticketing and reservation systems, e-commerce applications, event processing and alerting, online gaming, and software as a service (SaaS) application platforms. Additionally, data from leading disk-based, relational databases can be cached into solidDB Universal Cache to help support peak workloads experienced by such applications as customer service and stock trading.

solidDB Universal Cache is also highly adaptable, with the ability to deploy as a read-only cache or as a read-write cache, to meet a wide variety of different application and deployment needs. It provides additional flexibility with powerful schema mapping and data transformation capabilities to move data between solidDB Universal Cache and the backend database.

To provide further deployment adaptability, solidDB Universal Cache delivers both vertical and horizontal scalability. In addition to leveraging multicore and multiprocessor environments, it also provides different configurations to scale out in-memory cache processing across multiple servers. For example, different cache instances can be configured to maintain identical copies of the same data, to facilitate load balancing, for read, or read-write access. Alternatively, large tables in the backend database can be partitioned, where each data partition can be hosted by a dedicated in-memory cache instance, for read, or read-write access.

While providing data access with extreme speed, solidDB Universal Cache is designed not to sacrifice data durability. Data is persisted to disk using checkpointing and transaction logging. Further, solidDB Universal Cache is designed to offer high availability and instant failover from one cache instance to another, if deployed in a two-node, hot-standby configuration. In this configuration, two copies of the data are kept synchronized between the two cache instances at all times, which can help applications failover between the cache instances in less than a second in case of system failure.

The extreme speed and high availability of solidDB Universal Cache, as compared to conventional disk-based databases, is designed to enable businesses to keep data available and accessible. Greater availability can help lower the costs associated with both planned and unplanned outages and delays. Furthermore, because solidDB Universal Cache runs on commodity as well as best-of-breed hardware, businesses can select from the most suitable solutions for their business need.

By combining the relational in-memory data management capabilities of IBM solidDB Universal Cache with the versatility of disk-based databases, applications benefit from the best of both worlds.

Universal caching

solidDB Universal Cache complements IBM DB2 on Linux®, UNIX®, and Windows®, DB2 for z/OS®, IBM IDS, or Oracle to accelerate access to their data. Its two major components are:

  • Relational, in-memory database software that delivers performance-critical data with extreme speed.
  • High performance data synchronization software that copies data back and forth between the in-memory cache and a specified backend database.

As a result of solidDB Universal Cache's broad support for industry-leading backend databases, application teams can leverage the same skills and experience to accelerate performance across a variety of database technologies and projects.

Extreme speed

Uses relational in-memory database technology

The core of solidDB Universal Cache is relational in-memory database technology designed to meet the performance demands of real-time applications that require extreme speed and predictable response times, to achieve tens of thousands of transactions per second with response times measured in microseconds.

As the "in-memory" name implies, data resides entirely in main memory, making data access extremely fast. In-memory database technology provides data structures and access methods specifically designed for storing, searching, and processing data in main memory, while using efficient concurrency control mechanisms. Because any data requested by the application is already in main memory, it is not necessary to determine if the requested data is in its buffer pool or on disk. Further, there is no need to transfer data blocks from slow disk drives to main memory. As such, solidDB Universal Cache requires fewer processor instructions to access data compared to conventional, disk-based databases. This remains true even if the disk-based database were to cache all its data into its buffer pool.

solidDB Universal Cache implements an atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability (ACID) compliant in-memory cache, that uses checkpointing and transaction logging. To increase performance, administrators can configure transaction logging to be asynchronous or turn it off, while still being able to recover from the last checkpoint in the event of a system failure. This is possible because solidDB Universal Cache implements snapshot consistent checkpointing.

Brings performance-critical data closer to the application

solidDB Universal Cache can be co-located with the application server, and optionally linked with an application. By storing performance-critical data in solidDB Universal Cache and deploying it in the application tier, performance is enhanced because the network latency is avoided. Linking solidDB Universal Cache with the application also eliminates the overhead of interprocess communication and context switching in the operating system.

Adaptability

Adapts to different application and deployment needs

solidDB Universal Cache can be deployed as a read-only cache or as a read-write cache. When configured as read-write cache there are two possible deployment options.

When configured as a read-only cache and the data is owned by the backend database. This means the data stored in solidDB Universal Cache can not be modified by the application. In this configuration, applications can modify the data directly in the backend database and changes can be synchronized to the in-memory cache, transaction by transaction, automatically or on-demand. This configuration is ideal for applications that require fast access to data that changes occasionally, such as price lists, or reference or lookup data.

When configured as a read-write cache and the data is owned by the cache, applications can read, add, modify, or delete data in the in-memory cache, but not in the backend database. Changes are propagated from the in-memory cache to the backend database, transaction by transaction, automatically, or on-demand. This configuration is useful for applications that have stringent service-level agreements that demand short response times, for a variety of data intensive operations.

Finally, when configured as a read-write cache and the data ownership is shared, applications can update the same data in both the in-memory cache as well as in the backend database at the same time. In this case, changes to the data can be automatically propagated in both directions. Conflicts are detected and resolved by using predefined conflict resolution methods. This configuration is especially useful when applications need to update the data in the backend database while the data is also cached for read-write access.

Provides powerful schema mapping and data transformations

When configuring solidDB Universal Cache data schema, users have great flexibility in deciding what data to cache. Users can:

  • Retain the same relational database schema as the backend database, or have a different schema
  • Load the entire database or select just specific tables, columns, or rows
  • Extend the in-memory cache schema with additional tables or derived fields
  • Maintain the data format or apply data transformations such as data type conversions or summarizations

Additionally, with its support for stored procedures, triggers, and events, solidDB Universal Cache allows developers to execute business logic in the in-memory cache.

Scales vertically and horizontally

The in-memory database technology of solidDB Universal Cache is designed to leverage large memory sizes offered by 64-bit computers, along with the processing scalability provided by multiprocessor and multi-core architectures. As such, solidDB Universal Cache can scale vertically to maintain response times measured in microseconds and high transaction throughput with growing data volumes and increasing numbers of concurrent connections. Additionally, solidDB Universal Cache provides different configurations to scale in-memory cache processing horizontally across multiple servers. As an example, different cache instances can be configured to maintain identical copies of the same data, to facilitate load balancing, for read, or read-write access. Alternatively, large tables in the backend database can be partitioned, where each data partition can be hosted by a dedicated in-memory cache instance, for read, or read-write access. For instance, a large customer table in the backend database that contains 1,000,000 customers can be partitioned into four solidDB Universal Cache instances with each storing 250,000 customers.

Robustness

Preserves data durability

solidDB Universal Cache implements an ACID compliant in-memory cache, that persists data to disk using checkpointing and transaction logging. This is especially useful in read-write cache configurations (where the cache owns the data), or in the event of loss of network connectivity between the in-memory cache and the backend database. In the latter case, the in-memory cache is designed to continue to process the workload, persist the changes to local disk, and accumulate the changes for synchronization with the backend database at a later time, without data loss.

Delivers high availability and instant failover from one cache instance to another

solidDB Universal Cache can deploy in a two-node, hot-standby configuration that maintains two copies of data synchronized between two cache instances. In case of system failure, failover between cache instances can occur in less than a second. This feature helps to protect users from unplanned outages. Whether a system failure or a planned "switchover" between the pair of cache instances, the secondary instance is designed to quickly take over the processing load, preventing data loss. The failover is engineered to be transparent to the application; solidDB Universal Cache's ODBC and JDBC drivers maintain the database connection and session attributes.

Provides cache management and monitoring capabilities

solidDB Universal Cache provides a graphical management console for users to define in-memory cache schema, field mappings, and data transformations. Additionally, run-time counters are available to monitor cache synchronization and diagnose performance related problems.

IPLA and Subscription and Support considerations

IPLA licenses can be transferred from one machine to another within, but not limited to an enterprise. You may aggregate the capacity for all the processors the product is operated on to achieve a more economic price. This will result in a single Proof of Entitlement (PoE). It is your responsibility to manage the distribution of Value Units within the limits of the entitlement of the product license.

Subscription and Support must cover the same capacity as the product license entitlement. Subscription and Support will be available in the country in which the agreement is made.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor families (vendors and brands). A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on the level or tier of all processor cores activated and available for use by the program on the server. Some programs allow licensing to less than the full capacity of the server's activated processor cores, sometimes referred to as sub-capacity licensing. For programs which offer sub-capacity licensing, if a server is partitioned utilizing eligible partitioning technologies, then a PoE must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition where the program runs or is managed by the program. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Terms or the program's License Information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms. The PVU entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another program.

Sub-capacity for selected middleware products

Sub-capacity licensing on a per processor or per Value Unit basis is available for selected middleware products. To offer sub-capacity licensing, IBM software products implement IBM Tivoli® License Compliance Manager within their offerings so that you can monitor and report quarterly to IBM on the use of the programs on a continuous basis.

Eligibility requirements for sub-capacity licensing

To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing terms on this product, you must agree to install and configure IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software, in accordance with the IBM Tivoli License Manager publications, and to enable the collection of program use data on all eligible machines subject to sub-capacity terms.

For those machines running programs with sub-capacity licensing terms, you must use IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software to monitor program use and submit to IBM an IBM Use Report each calendar quarter. Multiple copies of IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software or IBM Tivoli License Manager are not required. You can use more copies if you need them to support your operational environment, but only one copy is required to monitor all your sub-capacity licensed products.

Additionally, if this is the first product you have licensed under sub-capacity terms, you must agree to the terms of an attachment to your Passport Advantage or Passport Advantage Express contract and submit a new Passport Advantage enrollment form. First-time sub-capacity clients also have an opportunity to ensure a primary business contact is established for their contracts.

If you order (this product) under sub capacity terms, IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software will be made available to you if you do not already have one. You must install and configure this tool for your sub capacity products. Alternately, you can use Tivoli License Manager. Once the license manager software is installed, you will be required to register online. (IBM may need to contact you in order to finalize the registration process.) You must monitor program use on a continuous basis with an IBM Tivoli License Manager for IBM Software and submit IBM Use Reports to IBM on a calendar quarterly basis.

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and PoE govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. Consult the IBM Software Support Handbook for further information at

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of five years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Maintenance is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Maintenance also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

  • For programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program.
Authorization for use on home/portable computer

The program may be stored on the primary machine and another machine, provided that the program is not in active use on both machines at the same time. You may not copy and use this program on another computer without paying additional license fees.

Yes. Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express. Product upgrades and technical support are provided by the Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) offering as described in the Agreements. Product upgrades provide the latest versions and releases to entitled software and Technical Support provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations, worldwide.

IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with each program license acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at

Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under the applicable agreements.
