Data Discovery and Query Builder offers a framework, runtime, and application development environment for the creation of Web browser-based query construction and management applications. Using the resulting browser-based applications, you can easily create complex ad hoc queries using business and research terms instead of obscure table and column names.

The query construction interface includes these powerful features that help free users from the complexities of Structured Query Language (SQL):

  • Easy navigation of data elements
  • Prompts for possible values
  • Easy incorporation of Boolean logic with nesting
  • Specification of various comparison operators
  • Implicit joining of tables
  • Subquery support

The interface requires neither programming knowledge nor an understanding of relational concepts such as joins. The ability to construct complex queries without complex languages or user interfaces means that you can spend time understanding the data and refining queries without the assistance of a database administrator.

Improvements to the DDQB Studio component for Version 3.0 increase the functionality and usability for you to build, test, maintain, and publish your own Data Discovery and Query Builder Web application.

In addition, the API support for Data Discovery and Query Builder now offers even more of the functionality of the Data Discovery and Query Builder Web application. These APIs enable application programmers to benefit from the easy query construction and management functions in Discovery and Query Builder.

For details about all the new features and enhancements, refer to the Description section.

Description
Bottom rule

Data Discovery and Query Builder V3.0 is an application development framework that allows creation of Web-based, end-user dynamic query applications. Core components of an application created with Data Discovery and Query Builder are:

  • Data Query Builder
  • Instance of a Data Abstraction Model (DAM)
  • Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio

The following are new features and enhancements for Data Discovery and Query Builder V3.0 :

Data Query Builder

Data Query Builder is a runtime component of Data Discovery and Query Builder. Its Web-based interface allows you to create end-user dynamic queries using the terminology, categorization, hierarchies, and logical fields defined in a DAM. You can dynamically create complex searches without prior knowledge of physical data store tables, obscure column names, non-intuitive coded data values, filtering, or join logic. In addition to simplifying construction of complex queries, Data Query Builder manages query and result set data that can either be shared among users or kept private. Query results can be returned in HTML, XML, comma separated values (CSV), XLS (Microsoft® Excel), or tab delimited formats. Query results can be sorted and ordered. You can extend Data Query Builder with plug-ins for security, auditing, and end-user usability. Data Query Builder V3.0 continues to streamline the process of query building, as well as supporting Hippocratic databases.

Data Abstraction Model

The DAM is an XML-based document that maps how end users logically think of the data-to-physical-data representation. For example, a DAM may map an end user's concept of "age" to the calculation involving the current date and a column in a table containing a birth date.

Key entries of the DAM are fields and categories. Fields represent logical data entities available in searches against underlying an physical data model, and categories of group-related fields or other related categories. Categories can be nested to an arbitrary depth. The Data Query Builder runtime component uses information from the DAM to determine what terminology and format to use when presenting a user with fields for query construction. The information from the DAM converts abstract representation of a user's query request into SQL during execution of queries.

Data Discovery and Query Builder V3.0 continues to improve the DAM to support the new features of the Data Discovery and Query Builder Web interface.

For additional information about the Data Abstraction Model, refer to "IBM Data Discovery and Query Tutorial: Creating a DDQB Application" on the CD that is shipped with the software.

Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio development environment

Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio is an integrated development environment for creating, customizing, running, and debugging Data Discovery and Query Builder applications. The development environment includes the tools you need to create and edit your Data Discovery and Query Builder applications. Studio is a set of plug-ins that can be installed into an existing development environment, including:

  • IBM WebSphere Application Server Toolkit (AST) V6.1
  • IBM Rational Application Developer for WebSphere Software V7.0
  • IBM Rational Software Modeler V7.0
  • IBM Rational Software Architect V7.0

These platforms offer a wide array of development-related tools. The IBM Rational® products contain additional tools beyond what is available in the AST 6.1 development environment provided for free by WebSphere. These additional IBM Rational tools are helpful in debugging Data Discovery and Query Builder applications.

New features of Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio V3.0 include:

  • Support for multiple Data Discovery and Query Builder configurations, making it easier to work on more than one project or prototype.

Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio V3.0 now supports multiple instances of Data Discovery and Query Builder within a single project. Many organizations using Data Discovery and Query Builder have multiple environments that they support such as one for development and test and one for production. Other groups may have one instance of Data Discovery and Query Builder for production and another for product administrators to use for queries against the object repository and audit logs. Being able to support multiple instances of Data Discovery and Query Builder within a single project facilitates sharing of resources such as the DAM file, auditors, validators, and analysis routines. Multiple instance support also facilitates easier integration with version control systems and other tools in the overall development framework.

  • Data Discovery and Query Builder Specific Project Navigator, making it easier to navigate the Data Discovery and Query Builder files involved in a project.

The Project Explorer view now contains easy-to-access and logically grouped shortcut icons used to open editors on the most frequently used Data Discovery and Query Builder application configuration resources such as DAMs and analysis routines. This significantly cuts down on the need to navigate all the way down through the J2EE project file hierarchy in order to find and work with a specific resource. With this support you can quickly see from the Project Explorer view where there are resources not in the current configuration and then quickly add them to the configuration. Likewise, resources that are configured can be removed from the configuration from the Project Explorer. Previously this could only be done by opening and working with the DDQB Configuration Descriptor.

  • Graphical Relations Editor, making it easier to build Data Discovery and Query Builder data models.

A new easy-to-use relations model graphical editor is provided in Data Discovery and Query Builder Studio V3.0. Creating and editing entities, relations, and relation sets is easy and fast. Moreover, the developer can now graphically see the relationships between entities as well as any improper cycles. The editing and display of the relations model is now done on a configuration-wide basis. That is, the editor displays all entities, relationships, and relation sets from all DAMs that are configured to be part of the application. The graphical display of the model makes it faster and easier to ascertain if the model reflects the intended design of the model.

Data Discovery and Query Builder V3.0 enhancements

Data Discovery and Query Builder V3.0 offers new advanced query capabilities and additional API support and continues the product translation first offered in Data Discovery and Query Builder V2.2. The following are just some of these enhancements and new features for Version 3.0:

  • New advanced query capabilities, including support for:
    • Association conditions
    • Online analytical functions for aggregation and ranking of result columns
    • Save and reuse of conditions and classifications
    • Event windowing
    • Direct viewing of DAM through DAM Navigator
    • Ability to use any field as model entity
    • Capability to disable conditions
    • Improved join path resolution
  • Additional API support, providing essentially the full functionality of the new features of the Data Discovery and Query Builder Web application. This includes:
    • New network layer based on sockets that vastly improves Web Services performance, measured up to 20 times faster than Version 2.2 Web Services

Security, auditability, and control

Data Discovery and Query Builder uses the security and auditability features of both the DB2® database and the WebSphere Application Server. Data Discovery and Query Builder further provides extensive features for plugging in customized security, auditability, and control within the context of its abstraction layer. As an example, DB2 can be used to grant or revoke authority to a table containing test values, while Data Discovery and Query Builder can be used to grant or revoke authority to a logical specific test field containing hemoglobin test values.

Security and auditability features of the Data Discovery and Query Builder are:

  • Plug-in support allowing customized security based on the action taken (login, query execution), the user doing it, and the objects used (database values, analysis routines, and so on).
  • Default implementations of the security component for common cases that can be augmented and extended to specific environments.
  • Controllable data access to the row or column level.
  • Customizable audit logs that can be queried, in turn, through Data Discovery and Query Builder.
  • Data Discovery and Query Builder V3.0 includes a full-featured integrated auditor provided in addition to the existing customizable audit support. This predefined auditor captures extensive information about the use of the Data Discovery and Query Builder system right out of the box without additional customization.

The security functions of Data Discovery and Query Builder can either replace or augment the security, auditability, and control features of DB2 and WebSphere.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
